Hulk visits the X-Men
How many times have we, as comic book fans, been burnt by Marvel or DC when buying a tie-in to a cross over? I know I've lost count... and you've probably lost count as well. They usually offer very little to the main storyline... sometimes they hardly have anything to do with the main storyline... and they often have everyone acting out of character and the continuity between the cross over and the main characters story arc is just a plain mess and makes no sense what-so-ever.
I had very low expectations when I sat down to read World War Hulk: X-Men... and I must say I was very surprised. Not only does this story actually hold up to the main storyline of World War Hulk, I also think that no other writer could have done a better job in trying to keep everything in continuity. I mean we're talking about the X-Men... lord only knows what's going on with each team at any given moment, but to try and figure out where they all are at the given time of World War Hulk... well I have to give the writer his props for actually bothering to do it.
I'm not going to spoil anything, but there's several things mentioned in this issue that shows the writer actually bothered to check up on where all the X-Men teams stand at the moment and also what's going on with them as a whole too.
Although the issue itself doesn't have any major flaws, and the story is actually relevent... there isn't all that much story in this issue. It's mostly a big slug fest, and I know that's mostly what we're expecting from this huge cross over, but the art is at best average. In an issue like this, the artist carries most of the burden to make the issue good... and I don't think DiVito was able to pull it off. The issue itself however is more relevant then most tie-ins in recent memory, but it fell short of being great.
