    Wonder Woman

Character » Wonder Woman appears in 8808 issues.

The Amazon princess, blessed with god-like super abilities, Wonder Woman is one of Earth's most powerful defenders of peace, justice, and equality and a member of the Justice League. She is considered an archetype for many heroines outside of comic book. Her initial origin depicted her as a clay baby brought to life by patron goddess Aphrodite, but in recent years she has been depicted as the daughter of Zeus and Amazon queen Hippolyta.

    Interesting.

Some people think WW first movie appearance needs to be linked to World War II. To me, this implies a line of reasoning that woman have come so far today that they have no issues and the best time to showcase women was a far gone era.

Does anyone seriously think that of women!

There are several fictional characters that capture the complexities of women today, and WW should always be one of them.

I love how Perez reintroduced WW and established a plausible reason for her allegiance to the USA while also embracing a multicultural affiliation. Of all countries, America at its best is a melting pot of cultures. It is a shining example that an other worldly or timely ambassador would adapt as a nexus to other countries and cultures. WW should be the best example of USA's potential, so costume explained and mission reinforced.

No need for World War II.

Just a need for good writing. I don't want to hear why WW can't work. I want to see each month why the character at her best does work in multiple settings, various completed adventures and using the unique abilities and weapons given her by her creator.

Her mission has not changed. WW comes from a seemingly idealic, isolated society with her honest intent to share those ideals and beliefs to make the world better. Ironically, that is an idealic goal shared by the USA.

In the most recent incarnation before New 52, Paradise Island was brought up to date into modern terms by becoming a world power and exchanging ideas and sharing visits with other nations. This was a natural evolution of the original theme of WW's mission.

Interesting twist today would be making that a parallel of the USA as a world power with the idea of protecting/changing the world and the question of attempting to change/respect the culture of other nations in regards to the security of one's home nation.

People have questioned today's WW wearing an American flag. I suggest the reasoning is two fold. She is wearing it to honor Ameeican citizens(pre- 52 Diana Tevor, today Steve Trevor) for being catalyst to get her off island. Also, noting the American theme of shared cultures to bring nations together and learn/respect multicultural themes and unity.

This would challenge readers to embrace the foundation of the American culture and think about its reality and attempt to maintain goals to meet its potential.

This WW should never be short of story, occasional contraversy, themes that explore liberty/freedom/human frailty and strength and empowerment of women in a way that only a woman can make a difference based on spirit, physical strength and the feminine mystique.

The gods are great elements. There is a balance with mythology which works best when gods interact with humans- directly and by influence. The gods were childish and powerful and needed to interact with humans with dire and epic consequences. When new 52 WW was launched, the concept was that she was protecting humans from gods. Not the epic battles but how gods influenced them to love, fight and grow, I thought and had hoped.

Her villains should reflect that- Silver Swan(Ares hate/Aphrodite acceptance of beauty of self), Dr. Psycho(jealousy despite gifts- Hephaestus), Giganta(female superior strength at cost of allure of female frailty), Circe(glass ceiling- access and networking with gods; cosmic power but not accepted or allowed into ranks of gods), and Dr. Cyber(science over mythology with vanity to win).

WW is not just an amazon. She is the best of amazons, women and humans. This does not make her perfect but both wondrous and vulnerable. She doesn't think she is above it all but constantly strives to be better while hating she can't make everything better in one simple feat. She does it all without constant recognition and sometimes being hated/misunderstood. But, she does it anyway.

You know, like a real woman.

@sinisteri: In short I totally agree. I hate the idea of a WW movie in WW2. There is just no call for it. Her characters origin is retellable for any age. To be honest, Rucka should have swollowed his pride and done his WW origin anyway. The characters bigger than him, if it wasn´t Earth One he could have been picked for WW New 52 or even a graphic novel and she wouldn´t be in the shambles she´s in now. I think that is what is holding back her movie and alot of other DC characters. Screen writers often need a template for their scripts. Most of DC characters cause of their fetish with Superman and Batman, just don´t have that difinitive origin story about them.
