Probably for the same reason that Black Widow was in Iron Man 2. We get an extended cameo that introduces the character, and sets it up for her role in Justice League. Unless they want to make Justice League a 4-5 hour film, they're going to need to find other ways of bringing in the big players for it, and I think this is just another case of that.
Wonder Woman
Character » Wonder Woman appears in 8717 issues.
The Amazon princess, blessed with god-like super abilities, Wonder Woman is one of Earth's most powerful defenders of peace, justice, and equality and a member of the Justice League. She is considered an archetype for many heroines outside of comic book. Her initial origin depicted her as a clay baby brought to life by patron goddess Aphrodite, but in recent years she has been depicted as the daughter of Zeus and Amazon queen Hippolyta.
What is the purpose of her being in BvS?
Didn't read all the comments but she's in there to set up the Justice League movie as is Aquaman.
Pretty much this.
@agent41: Of course not, Batman and Superman have always been the bread and butter of DC. From a business stand point it makes sense for them to want to cash in on the names of their only 2 proven franchises in film. Batman and Superman's names in the title will sell tickets, the name Trinity might not. And frankly if the title was Batman vs Superman featuring Wonder Woman: Dawn of Justice it would begin to sound more like a late 90s rap album than a movie.
This post makes zero sense. How is WW being used as a trophy.....This Movie is BATMAN v SUPERMAN. the movie is about these two characters not Wonder Woman. Wonder woman is in the movie in a small role to lead into the JL movie and then eventually her own movie. You should be happy because this is her first big screen adaptation so please stop complaining and look at the positives for once.
Modern comic fans are spoiled children, they don't see it as the character they liked growing up is finally getting some attention, they see it as if anything that deviates from what they want to see is a personal attack. They cry and whine over seeing the same stuff over and over, but loose their s**t whenever something new happens. They say they want their characters in movies but when it happens all they do is complain about how the character will be represented before they even see the first trailer. No sense in arguing with that, it'll just drive you nuts.
truth
@agent41: the trinity means squat to promoting a movie. WW may as well be a brand new character in the cinematic world. Total unknown quantity for driving an audience. BM and SM have excellent film track records and thus will headline. The fact that she's generating press and being showcased ahead of the rest of the League speaks volumes about her treatment. DC would love her to succeed in film as it would bring a new audience and enhance their overall market position. But they are playing it cautiously to get some information.
@zhurong: why? Did Ororo, Jean, Emma, Carol, Kitty or Jen Walters get a lead in a movie when I wasn't paying attention? Did they name suddenly decide to name something Xmen: Storm's next class? The problem is in marketing female hero leads to mass male audiences without making a mockery out of the character. How would you get a 16 year old boy excited to see a WW movie? How would you position to a 20 year old woman that a WW film is written for her, even though it's a superhero action movie? This is why DC is constantly saying they won't do it without a good script. They know she's a polarizing character for a mass audience. You can write it for men, and you'll end up with her being some kind of sex fantasy or you can write it for women and have it be about empowerment ... WW as a comedy probably isn't going to work like Charlie's Angels managed.
The Cynic in me says: She will just be there as Batman arm candy, a la JLU.
The Optimist in me hopes: She will help Superman take down Doomsday. And maybe she will be the leverage Batman uses to fight Supes.
EDIT: As far as your complaint about Wondy not getting her own movie first, you're being narrow sighted. WB is afraid she couldnt carry her own movie without a strong reveal, hence putting her in a movie with the most popular Comic Book characters in the world. WB is right to be cautious in this, as WW had a failed pilot just a few years ago.
You're complaining about nothing. She doesn't need her own movie. Be happy she is finally on the big screen at all. And she's here for the same reason cyborg and aquaman are, to promote and build the foundation for the justice league.
@agent41: not really. She is fictional, she doesn't need anything.
@agent41: how is it sexist
@agent41: well she's not as popular as batman or superman. No dcdc or marvel character is. However she is probably the most popular female character and she has two solo titles now. I just don't see what's wrong with how she is doing now.
@csg_cl: Funny that you say because they all been in movies. Catwoman and Elektra got major roles in movies so don't even start. Hell, nobody know who the Guardians of the Galaxy are but yet they getting a movie. DC should just rename the JL and call it "Batman/Superman and their sidekicks". Wonder Woman should of had a movie long time ago but no she isn't good enough in the eyes of the company.
