What if Frank Miller wrote Wonder Woman ?

#1 Posted by Feliciano2040 (654 posts) - 1 year, 10 months ago - Show Bio

For starters, I am not an avid reader of Wonder Woman, this is something I intend to fix at some point by starting to read her books at one point or another, I find her to be a VERY fascinating character, even if I once thought her to be pretty flat, I decided to make this topic in reference to Wonder Woman's position today as a character which "aparently" is not selling well and who is not connecting with as many audiences as DC Comics would want, take notice, I am not insulting anyone here.

That said, there is plenty of doubts about wether Frank Miller still has a career in comic books, after "Dark Knight: Boy Wonder" nobody is really looking forward to his next project (sp).

Yet, I've always wondered, for a writer who has a VERY set and clear view of women, how would he write Wonder Woman ?

A lot of people accuse him of being misoginystic prick, which is quite reasonable, but (kill me if you must) I believe him to be one of the very few writers capable of grasping the themes surrounding the Wonder Woman mythos, which is something that I haven't exactly seen in the spotlight when dealing with Wonder Woman, one doesn't exactly feel one is reading something akin' to the material that influenced the character.

This is another reason why I loved Wonder Woman's most recent animated film, I think it took plenty of advantage of the literary background of the character.

In that same respect, I feel that a good, shapen up, with a couple of slaps to the face Frank Miller can very well do something with the character.

Agree ? Disagree ? What do ya'll think ?

He would probably kill her off.
Really though, he' probably just get back to her roots, like 60's roots, where she couldn't fly, mildly strong, you know....thats how Miller rolls

@cattlebattle: I laughed my ass off at that first line, nice one.

But in all seriousness, I wouldn't think he would screw her up that bad, it's hard to know given how it seems like there's something odd about Miller these days.

I would think he would try to hook her up with Superman, he does have a passion for that coupling, very odd, given how a lot of people like Batman & Wonder Woman much more.

But if DC offered him the deal, and if he was really interested (clear headed and all) I wouldn't think he would just dumb her down or degrade her, that's not how Miller rolls.

She would get raped (literally)

Frank Miller isn't that bad a writer. I have enjoyed alot of his work. Know doubt some of his more recent stuff is a bit sh*t but everyone goes through some bad patches.

He would have her break up a prostitution ring, and there would be HEAVY bondage themes in the comic.

I'm being serious.

He'd probably imply that everyone on Thymiscara is a lesbian, Wonder Woman would probably get raped by the goddamn Batman on a pier somewhere, and the whole thing would just be a terrible sex joke. I love Miller, but some characters are just not for him.

I really don't think Miller can write a good Wonder Woman. I think he would write her more like his Elektra which isn't bad but it isn't Wonder Woman, or maybe something along the lines of his current work on Ultimate Avengers which I don't think suits WW well at all.  I'd rather have Morrison write WW.

C'maaaaaan ! There wasn't any bondage in Sin City or in All-Star Batman (I think), and certainly not much more than in Golden Age Wonder Woman.

The idea would be that if Miller somehow got the inspiration from Wonder Woman's background as a greek warrior, then perhaps he could pull off a less racist, less macho, less spartan-ego-stroking version of 300.

MrUnknown: And as much as I love Grant Morrison, he is a writer for long term fans, for people who can understand his themes and where he comes from, he is not exactly the best when it comes to re-introducing a character into the medium, I know that there is Animal Man, but I haven't read that, I speak from my experience with All-Star Superman and his Batman run, and none of those two are for new readers.

There was heavy hints to S&M prostitution in Sin City.

Morrison reintroduced the X-Men to new readers, in what is still Marvel's best achievement.

THERE WERE characters who did S&M Prostitution ! Because the focus of several stories was on the prostitutes, so naturally one can expect that in a Sin City story one should see such things, but I really don't think the first think Frank Miller envisions when sitting down and writting a comic is "HOOKERS & ROPE !", I could name dozens of his work that are absolutely without it.

I don't read much X-Men, nothing really, but I've heard that his run is not exactly well received, I remember a friend of mine told me "that sh*t is unreadable", and he loves his Claremont with a passion !

Old Miller didn't think like that, but then he went insane.

This may sound harsh, but your friend is wrong. The run won an Eisner and to this day is the standard for many people when it comes to X-Men stories.

I think he could do something epic with WW.  Something with a dash of 300 maybe.  A hard, gripping Miller street-level WW seems more likely.

As long as Pat Mills doesn't get involved with WW.

Yeah, although I like to think that maybe his recent comments are just those from an old, grumpy person, not necessarily insane.

Wow ! More than Chris Claremont's run ?

She would be born by the result of Hades and Zeus both raping Hippolyta, leading to questions of who was her true father, Themyscira would be an S&M, lesbian, orgy-fest, she'd use her invincible gauntlets to ricochet bullets back into her enemies, Steve Trevor would be torn in half in front of her by Cerberus, there would be some graphic scenes of bestiality, Wonder Woman would fail at saving a young girl from being kidnapped and drawn into a prostitution ring (whom we would later learn was Donna Troy), and in the end, after killing Batman and Superman (who remind her of Hades and Zeus, respectively), Wonder Woman would hang herself from a burning Statue of Liberty with The Lasso of Truth.

Suddenly - prostitutes EVERYWHERE.

@Feliciano2040: Far better than Claremont's run. Claremont's stuff is overrated anyway. Dark Phoenix and Days of Future Past were great, but CC is also the guy who brought writer fanwank to the medium on a major level.

I was referring more to writing her character in her regular series.

And that's a crass exageration mister !

@Feliciano2040: yeah, but i can't help but feel he'd write her exactly the same if he gave her a solo series...
#28 Posted by JoseDRiveraTCR7 (957 posts) - 1 year, 10 months ago - Show Bio
@Feliciano2040: It was not an exaggeration. Considering how Miller writes women, and has written WW in DK2 and ASB&R, he would probably write her the way Stegman described. Oh, and let's not forget that he's still writing Sin City, so it's probably just going to be WW: Sin City

If Miller wrote Wonder Woman? My wife would probably never renew her subscription!
#30 Posted by tbone1225 (232 posts) - 1 year, 10 months ago - Show Bio

For one, I think he'd aim Wonder Woman toward the whole relationship with Superman/having a child with Superman angle from the Dark Knight universe.

For another, I think that it would suck. I really don't think that Frank Miller can write a believable woman who isn't a prostitute.

Finally, there's no way DC would ever let that happen. I hope.

Doesn't seem like his thing, he seems best with street level characters like daredevil and batman. though i've heard some terrible things about his all star series

Well, Since Queen Hippolyta HERSELF basically implied that most amazons are lesbians, it wouldn't really be that surprising for Frank Miller to reiterate the point.  This is a scan from Wonder Woman Volume 2 issue 38....
Wonder raped by Batman?  Um... Wonder Woman raped by ANYONE would be far fetched even for Frank Miller.  It's hard to imagine that Bruce Wayne (assuming he turned evil) could actually live after attempting to rape the strongest female character in the DC universe (According to the DC database she is the strongest female super hero.)  I can't help but feel he'd lose some important parts before she actually killed him....

Thanks for the scan, but the examples I gave were only jokes, lol. The raped by Batman thing was me making fun of Miller's All-Star Batman when he had sex with Black Canary on the pier.

@Timandm: Lmao don't worry about it. Yep, the Goddamn Batman and the Black Canary on the pier with a... Batarang? Anyway, I wouldn't know what Green Arrow thought because, 1) All-Star Batman and Robin was so awful I couldn't finish the series, and 2) I don't even think there was a Green Arrow in that universe

@Timandm: I wouldn't be surprised if that's actually what they did things with. All in one book, Batman calls Robin a retard, gets into a rant about how he's the goddamn Batman and how he can call his goddamn car whatever he goddamn wants, and beats the hell out of Green Lantern in a yellow room while Robin sat there drinking lemonade.

Btw I'm not exaggerating at all either, lmao. This stuff was actually written down and published.

@Timandm: Yes by Miller, and Jim Lee drew it (and he did a beautiful job considering). Miller's wrote some of my favorite books (Born Again and Man Without Fear), but All-Star Batman and Robin was so... I don't even know how to describe it. Like if you want to laugh at something ridiculous, go ahead and give it a read. This book's right on par with Punisher vs. The Marvel Universe if you've ever read that

Frank Miller is great at writing bad ass male characters but with women he's much more hit and miss so she would either be an Elektra clone or a damsel in distress cause those are the only kinds of women he ever writes
