Wonder Woman
Character » Wonder Woman appears in 8808 issues.
The Amazon princess, blessed with god-like super abilities, Wonder Woman is one of Earth's most powerful defenders of peace, justice, and equality and a member of the Justice League. She is considered an archetype for many heroines outside of comic book. Her initial origin depicted her as a clay baby brought to life by patron goddess Aphrodite, but in recent years she has been depicted as the daughter of Zeus and Amazon queen Hippolyta.
Off My Mind: New Wonder Woman Vs. Old Wonder Woman
Reading the current J. Michael Straczynski run, I've been wondering what the heck is going on. I referred to this as being "Ultimate" Wonder Woman as Marvel has their Ultimate line. It was this image you see here from The Flash #6 that mentioned a time paradox involving Wonder Woman. Apparently I missed mention of the Gods changing the timeline for their own reason which could involve the their survival and/or the survival of Earth. Am I the only one that missed this explanation?
Even though Straczynski is leaving the book and Phil Hester will continue using JMS' notes and outlines, how long until we see the return of the Wonder Woman we all know? Should we see a return of the old Wonder Woman?
== TEASER ==
For the four issues that we've seen so far, I haven't been able to decide if I like the new direction or not. I'd like to think that JMS had a nice big plan for the character. I just wasn't seeing it so far. Straczynski intended to stay on for at least twelve issues so we're not even half way through his vision.
If it's just a matter of the "timeline" being mucked around with, that can easily be reversed...at least as easy as it is to change time in comics. I can't say I really like that excuse though. "Let's give Wonder Woman a new start in her own timeline." Does this mean we wouldn't see her interact with the other heroes since she doesn't know them in this timeline? Do they even exist here? Does Wonder Woman still exist in the regular DC timeline? In the recent Justice League of America/The 99 mini series, Wonder Woman is along side her fellow teammates in her new costume. This just makes me more confused. Regardless, if Batman could make it through when Darkseid sent him on his journey through time, let's hope Wonder Woman can make it through this mess as well.
I don't have a problem with the costume change. She could alternate between the two looks for all I care. I just don't know who this Wonder Woman is in the current comics. Normally I would support a story trying something new but I don't see the point of creating a new timeline/direction just to have everything revert back to normal in the end. This might be interesting to some readers but with each issue, I'm finding myself caring less and less. Wonder Woman can be a tough sell. Straczynski, Simone and Rucka are great writers but the title has always struggled in trying to reach comic readers. Maybe it's reluctance on readers' part to really get into Wonder Woman. It isn't necessary to push a reset button and start Wonder Woman all over outside the DC Universe just to make her accessible to new readers.
So who's with me? Let's put out the call to the "Gods" to stop these timeline shenanigans and bring back the Wonder Woman we all know. There needs to be a focus on that character rather than try to reinvent her. Once she's back, then we can talk about what she should be wearing.
IMO, i prefer the original leotard . The other costume still looks good, but she should wear it as civvy clothes instead .
:)
We also saw "Classic" Wonder Woman in issue 6 of The Return of Bruce Wayne, she was a big part of Bruce's death and resurrection at the end there along with Superman and Red Robin. So even though it hasn't been addressed (for some ungodly reason) what the heck is going on with WW she still exists in the actual time line in some form. She'd have to or else how could Donna and Wonder Girl exist if WW never had, and if she was gone wouldn't they be wondering what happened to her?
I don't think they actually said that the Gods have messed around with time in her book, it was revealed but not in her comic I think, so if you missed it so did I. Diana hasn't gotten to that point yet. It will be a big reveal for her but not for the reader since it we already know.
I'm reminded of Brand New Day where people weren't sure if it was real or not. Wondering if Spider-Man in Secret Invasion was the "Brand New" Spider-Man or not. Then we got the Secret Invasion ASM/Brand New Day tie in that brought the two independent story lines together.
Maybe we will see something that will explain and bring this all together?
I never been a WW fan but her recent issues have kicked ass and her new is great in my opinion. Never liked her old look that much but the new and recent one should stay. If Batman can change up his look so can she. Let Superman be the only elephant in the room
" I don't care what look they choose. I just want the old Wonder Woman's personality back. "Exactly!
The problem is that Wonder Woman is constantly redone by most writers in a attempt to reach new readers no one can remember anything about her it's like she is unknown to fans. No constancy it's no wonder most people say writers don't "get" Wonder Woman since nothing sticks.
As for Wonder Woman's status after being rebooted it's a mainstream it is Wonder Woman look at this future solicitation of Superman#708 (I can't believe it will be late by two months)

Superman meets the new Wonder Woman for the first time! But why can't he shake the feeling that he already knows her? The Man of Steel will have to figure that out later, as the two heroes have their hands full defending Omaha, Nebraska from the evil Keres, a supernatural force determined to rid the town (and the world!) of all Amazons – and they're not too crazy about Kryptonians, either.

- Also there is much belief that Return of Bruce Wayne, Flash's time travel arc, Time Masters and Wonder Woman's reboot all play a part in the 2011 event Flashpoint. Note Wonder Woman's appearance

I think it's sad when things revert. What is it about comic books that they can't progress? But it would be even sadder still if she reverted back so quickly after this big change.
I think it would be nice if DC did not have all of their big guns with their own solo titles having revolve around big company crossovers. WW is already circling Flashpoint, Bruce Wayne just escaped as the last dying ember of Final Crisis and is already setting up the Bat League. Hal Jordan has been walking from one massive crossover into the other since he got back from the grave.
Superman seems to have gone free and if you didnt read anything related to the S, you wouldnt have noticed he was on a different planet or the Earth had been threatened by some 300.000 angry kryptonians or that he is out to mimic Forrest Gump.
Flash has also gone somewhat clear, except the Flash for the last 23 years suddenly dropped off the face of the planet in favor of a man who spent that time being very much dead and celebrated. And is now also heading towards the next big thing.
Thing is that if everything is about the 'big events', then they quickly become boring everyday reading.
i dont mind about the costume change but the new storyline has changed her personality into something weaker and uglier.
I like them both but I was unaware that this was in a different time and I'll now have to look into that and maybe re-read a few things
I always thought she looked like a bit of a bodybuilder with her original costume i realy like the new one but wat is up with her GET SORTED!
I'm really confused. I don't mind a costume change, although I prefer her origional iconic one, but JMS is definitly missing the mark here with her personality and story reboot. This story would have made much more sense in a Wonder Woman: Earth One graphic novel.

I have to agree here. Especially about the Flash. It took them over 20 years to establish Wally as The Flash, and now the old one is back and suddenly there are too many cooks in the kitchen (same thing happened to Kyle Rayner when Hal came back, but I digress).
Are people suprised that this "reboot"/new dirtection thing isn't sticking? It was inevitable. wonder woman needs to get her act together. When they restore her to how she was, they need to make her more iconic. Focus on the greek mythology stuff with a modern twist, giver an iconic city of her own, and pump up her rogues gallery
As long as she keeps her original personality, I hope she still gets the same love when she wore her original look....
I like classic Wonder Woman, but this new look has been growing on me. I hope it sticks around for a little while at least.
Actually I'm quite content with Stracz's work, what with all the godly and army stuff. It's much the two-faced legacy of Wonder Woman, thought without Trevor in the mix. I think he kinda grounded her in reality, like we saw in the 2009 anime, but his role would have trouble to stick, hence his distanciation.
I think an orientation as a guardian of Themyscira as a heaven for warrior women, or even firewomen and police officers would make for nice team-ups and investigation stories. I don't hate what's happening right now, but I don't see it going anywhere new or old... Just an arc. The rest is up to the other writers.
And, I dig the costume! I'm on team jacket.
I am not the biggest Wonder Woman fan, but I would have to say look at the sales, if the sales increased past the first few issues of this "new" Wonder Woman then I think you can say people are generally accepting it and it could be around for awhile. But if sales went low, or at least stayed the same with the prechange numbers you'll probably see a quick revert and call it a dream or something. Hey we all knows comics and soap operas are pretty much the same thing.
Its too soon T-Bone :)
If companies are going to make radical changes to character like WW, then they need to be committed to them on a long term basis, NOT FOREVER, but at least long enough to let the story grow and resolve itself organically. While I am not a huge WW fan, and even less so with recent changes, I do support DC's effort to think outside the box and introduce this great character to a wider audience.
On a related note, I hate when DC/Marvel hype up the RETURN of characters that haven't been gone more than a month or so...Like Hercules and the Black Lanterns for example...How long were they gone, a minute? Let the stories evolve guys!
I`m with you G-man ! They absoulutly screw up Wonder Woman . She should be wearing her old costume and they should stop this whole timeline shit .

It doesn't look like it's going to revolve around Batman Inc. very much.

Plus I'm not sure I'd call Batman Inc. an event, more like a new status quo, but it's only just begun so there's not much I can say yet.

" Would this be a good time to start reading Wonder Woman? "Yes.
Yeah I don't really understand what Wonder Woman is in JMS' series. It's like that story doesn't operate in the same time as all the other stories in the DCU. Same goes for JMS' Superman Grounded story arc. The new costume is cool, however I wouldn't mind seeing her revert back to the old one as well.
Writers, please reveal your plan for this beloved character, and return her to her normal continuity. I am all for change, but this recent transformation of Wonder Woman does not speak to me, at all.
I don't read Wonder Woman, so I can't really speak about the writing, but I think the redesign is quite spectacular. It incorporates the themes of the classic design so it feels "right" while updating it to be more pragmatic, realistic, and flattering. Having pantlegs certainly has its benefits.
The jacket design is the one thing (despite looking nice) that is a bit unnecessary.
Too bad they'll go right back to the granny panties look.
I don't like the new, seemingly backstory-less, unaware of her own history except when the authors need her to be, Wonder Woman. I DO like most of the new costume though. I hate the jacket, and I'm not a fan of how the pants seem to be attached to boots. But I do like the choker, the new tiara, the new top, and gold W engraved gauntlets.
You'd think women would be offended by Power Girl before Wonder Woman but that's another story altogether.
The look is nothing, the writing is every thing...and JMS' Xena er, Wonder Woman story is unreadable video game arc inspired by Altered Beast. That is every level is a "Power Up!"
It kinda just seems like the writers arent really sure what to do with the character. I STILL think the new suit looks too much like a Wonder Girl uniform, but its growing on me and the whole "they altered my timeline and origins" thing also seems too much like a Donna Troy (who im really starting to like more than her sister) storyline...
And Wonder woman suit in this piece is just bad. XD
