The Amazon princess, blessed with god-like super abilities, Wonder Woman is one of Earth's most powerful defenders of peace, justice, and equality and a member of the Justice League. Because we all love comics, there's pretty much nothing we'd like more than to see our favorite characters on the large and small screens. Back in September, word got out about another attempt to bring Wonder Woman to TV. The show would appear on The CW and involve Allan Heinberg, no stranger to comics or television.

    No Caption Provided

Some new information has surfaced. According to Deadline, there will be some changes. Wonder Woman's name will not be Diana. Instead, it will be Iris.

She comes from a remote, secluded country and until now has spent most of her life as a soldier and a leader on the battlefield. Because of relentless brutality of her life at home, Iris looks at our world with absolute awe and astonishment. She’s delighted and just as often horrified by the aspects of everyday life that we take for granted: skyscrapers, traffic, ice cream. It’s all new and fascinating and sometimes slightly troubling to her. Iris is completely unschooled in our world, our culture, our customs. And she’s completely inexperienced at interpersonal relationships. She has no social filter, does not suffer fools, and tends to do and say exactly what’s on her mind at all times. She’s bluntly, refreshingly honest. She can tell when you’re lying to her. And she doesn’t have time or patience for politics or tact because she’s too busy trying to experience everything our world has to offer. There are too many sights to see and things to learn and people to care for. Hers is a true, noble, and generous heart. And she will fight and die for the people she loves. Iris is a fierce warrior with the innocent heart of a romantic and she will fight to the death to make the world safe for innocents and true romantics everywhere.

Actresses are being looked for right now even though the script is still being written. Apparently it's not unusual for studios to do preliminary casting on 'high-profile' projects before they are greelit for production. Actresses in their early to mid-20s and are 5'8" or taller have a chance to be the next Wonder Woman on television.

One reason the decision to change Diana's name might be to give a little separation for the possibility of Wonder Woman also appearing on the big screen in a Justice League movie. They will likely want a younger looking actress for the TV version and a more experienced Wonder Woman for the movie franchise. With Arrow doing well for the CW, it's no surprise they will want to try to deliver more comic book television shows.

    Update

    Allan Heinberg tweeted this morning:

    No Caption Provided

    Geoff Johns tweeted as well:

    No Caption Provided

Perhaps "Iris" was a placeholder. Or maybe all the immediate outrage on the internet over the name change was heard right away.

M'kay, quick poll: Which would you people prefer, a big Justice League movie then spin offs for the various characters, or separate live action TV shows, one season for each, airing simultaneously, which then join together into a joint Justice League show?

I have no interest in Wonder Woman, so I don't really care if it works or not. That being said, I had no interest in Green Arrow either and I'm really liking Arrow, so who knows, a good WW show could still win me over... if done well.

Did nobody learn their lesson from that bomb of a Wonder Woman pilot? This is not going to work!! As much as I would love to see a W.W. live action show, it's not going to happen until certain people stop trying to change too much of her background. Wait until this so-called Justice League movie comes out and THEN try and see if a W.W. show could work! Come on!

Take this news with a grain of salt, gentlemen. They do this occasionally in casting, give a different name than the character they are actually reading for, especially for established characters. In the Once Upon a Time castings, the girl who got the "Sleeping Beauty" role thought she was reading for a character named Anastasia

Sounds like a terrible plan. Quite frankly, I would completely skip the Wonder Woman series, put it on hold/cancel due to the advent of a possible WW film. And we know JL is in the works. I wasn't the biggest fan of CW's take on Superman in Smallville. I'm not to enthusiastic about CW's WW.

    I say: NO.

@JonSmith: The show idea seems like a cool one but I want to see movies. Budgets for television shows are never all that high and I feel like it would take a fairly large budget to get the JLA's powers correct.

*gack* Television producers and studios need to leave comic book properties alone. Once in awhile they can do a good job with them, but 99% of the time....ummm....yeah. Just reading the line they will change her name made me cringe right away.

Yes I am an old fanboy griping but really, that isn't necessary to change her name. Come one, audiences are as f'ing stupid as Hollywood likes to think. They're the idiots!

IF it happens naturally I will see it but I hear a choo-choo chugging because it sounds like a train wreck ready to happen.

YES!!!! Thanks for that wonderful news my amazonian brother!! WW belongs on the CW. DC and Warner Brothers has been the best alliance ever. It is us fans that are benefiting the most. I am completely satisfied that WW is on the CW especially since the CW respects us fan boys and girls. For instance, 1month into arrow and they have already brought out dina, huntress and deadshot! It would not have felt right to me if NBC had picked up the show, because i doubt they care about our nerdy comicbook opinions. I guess in the end things worked out perfect. I am thrilled that this is happening:) and as for the iris thing- I dont think that will be happening. Lol

This actually looks good. You guys are really getting hung up on the name thing, and totally glossing over the fact that this isn't describing Diana's background at all. So the fact that her name isn't Diana is more of a sign of respect to Diana in particular. But rrrrAAAAARRR! NERD RAGE!

Why do series/movie creators constantly insist on making up their own background? Its NEVER liked or prefered by the actual audience.. This time it actually sounds about right so they had to mess up the name, such a minor detail that means so much.

My reading of Wonder Woman comes from the New 52 but before picking up New 52, I've never read her comics and my knowledge only came from wikis.

I hope that this WW series will actually see the light of the TV screen since I never see WW on TV or live film....ever.

This could either be a really good show in itself or a really bad Wonder Woman adaptation. I mean it sounds like they are going for a more "modern" take on Diana's origin, but I hope that her mythology or just Greek mythology in general are in the show. Maybe have her her super-strong and durable, still have her mention Hera or Athena(Maybe Zeus occasionally), leaving it up to the viewer to decide if she's a demigoddess or not.

In all honesty this sounds like it would make an excellent Elseworlds story, but I'm a little hesitant on it.

I know its nitpicking really but I'm just not wild about the name change. I can see why it is a good idea to change it but still, I just can't get past it. Everything else really as described tells me that this attempt can work. And at the very least if the name change must be done, why Iris? Should have been more logical to name her Athena or Artemis if they are dead set on doing that.

the name change is ridiculous and unnecessary....CW just likes changing things for no reason at all....like calling Dinah "Laural" or calling Star City "Starling City" there's absolutely no reason for the changes

Agreed. HBO is the only place I want to see the "big" DC characters on TV. Now if CW wanted to do a show about Amethyst or Hawkgirl, you're open to a little bit more leeway. Having a Wonder Woman show without her name being Diana is like having a Batman movie without Bruce...

At this point, I think Wonder Woman is better off not going to live action (outside of porn parodies of course where all superheroes have their best performances), I mean first she needs to get some more comics that get held up in the same tier as those of her peers like Red Son, The Dark Knight, Kingdom Come, Killing Joke, All Star, Arkham Asylum, etc.

Basically Grant Morrison needs to stop being so bad at getting out the projects he talks about and publish that Wonder Woman story of his.

and people ask why WW doesn't have a film or a TV show.. this is exactly why.... this kind of attitude is the reason... what do u guys know about the show exactly... the show is not even in early stages of development... at least give it chance ...or at least wait for some trailer or at least a iota of casting news before bashing it.. and as others have said, Iris is most likely a placeholder name.

    I hope you're right.

I'm a huge Wonder Woman fan and as much as I want to see any multimedia venture be as true to the comic as it can be, I'll take what I can get. If Iris is the placeholder name for casting calls or is actually the new identity for Wonder Woman in this show, I will support it because Wonder Woman needs this. The title of Amazon is perhaps is covering a certain amount of shame for the comic book cornyness that they may be associating with the name of Wonder Woman.

My concern is that if it's too far removed from the Wonder Woman mythos, will it be recognizable? Will people say . . . "yeah I'm diggin' that new Wonder Woman show Amazon"?

The name thing is annoying, but not my major concern. The terms, "refreshingly honest", "speaks her mind", "doesn't care for politics", and all the references to how romantic she is are what's filling me with dread. In CW language that usually means mouthing off to people and getting all doe-eyed over children and whoever the inevitable love interest is. (no doubt yet one more generically handsome twenty-something with tousled hair and designer stubble)

I'm also concerned about their use of the phrase "secluded country". I feel that's almost a guarantee that we can kiss the Amazons and Themyscira goodbye. Unless they simply name the country 'Themyscira'.

DC really needs to get it together and start having their shows and movies embrace the more fantastical aspects of their universe. Otherwise they're just gonna water all their characters down and make them second-rate Batmen. I'm hoping the new Superman movie will start the trend. With General Zod in it, we might actually get an awesome Superman fight.

The description sounds really good, seems like they hit allot of parts of WW's character and starting situation. Seems like there sticking much closer to the source material than the last show

This sounds worse than the pilot NBC made. At least that one was true to the character.

I realize Wonder Woman is the most well known heroine, but she just doesn't work for tv. By the time you come up with a decent premise, overall arc, villains, etc for a Wonder Woman show you will have departed so far from the character that you might as well call it something else.

Not to mention having a Wonder Woman show airing at the time of the Justice League movie when they have no connection whatsoever would be confusing to viewers. Especially when Marvel and Disney will have a SHIELD show that does connect to the movie universe.

Perhaps "Iris" was a placeholder. Or maybe all the immediate outrage on the internet over the name change was heard right away.

That's wrong, Mr. Guerero. I like ComcVine, but own up to your mistakes instead of coming up with lame excuses to cover yourself. When you spread misinformation--willfully or accidentally--you need to issue a retraction. You didn't publish the facts; you put in your own (incorrect speculation). I posted one of the first 10 comments correcting your assumption as Mr. Heinberg and Mr. Johns have, but you still let things grow out of control. For what? Clicks? I understand that this is an entertainment website, but that doesn't mean that you should lower the bar on journalistic integrity. I understand that you could have been swept up yourself or that you don't know everything about entertainment, but come on. With great power comes great responsibility. And being responsible means owning up to your mistakes.
