How is Hippolyta a good mother, not just to the Amazons, but to her daughter Diana?
In the Perez run, when the contest was put in order to decide an ambassador, Hippolyta forbid her daughter from joining. Why? First, she was still cautious to the ways of man, and did not want to daughter to risk enduring the same pain thrust upon her and her sisters by Herakles. Also, she feared that the task of defeating Ares was too much for anyone, even an Amazon. Lastly, she feared that she would lose her daughter, be it through death or the new responsibility given to her. Similarly, when Diana goes to Doom's Doorway, Hippolyta rushes afterward to find and save her daughter from its deadly contents. Likewise, in William Messner Loebs run, a new contest was held, as supposedly Hippolyta was displeased with Diana's work in Man's world. The truth was, she merely feared for her daughter once more, as a prophecy had foretold the death of Wonder Woman. Thus, hippolyta attempted to crown a new WW to circumvent the prophecy from affecting Diana. Even in the New 52 run, which many see as so "sexist" and detrimental, Hippolyta kept the truth of Diana's birth a secret not to scorn her or keep her from the truth, but to protect her and the other Amazons from the wrath of Hera.
A feminist icon like Diana could only have such a figure as a mother. This strong relationship with her mother, and even that of her "adoptive" mother Julia Kapetelis, is part of what separates Diana from many other STRONG, INDEPENDENT women.
