    Wonder Woman

Character » Wonder Woman appears in 8717 issues.

The Amazon princess, blessed with god-like super abilities, Wonder Woman is one of Earth's most powerful defenders of peace, justice, and equality and a member of the Justice League. She is considered an archetype for many heroines outside of comic book. Her initial origin depicted her as a clay baby brought to life by patron goddess Aphrodite, but in recent years she has been depicted as the daughter of Zeus and Amazon queen Hippolyta.

Say, anybody excited to go see the movie "Hercules" next week?

Before Wonder Woman, there was Hercules. The greatest (next to Achilles) hero of ancient Greece.

Like Wonder Woman, he fought for the oppressed. He was brave. He had great power, but was still vulnerable to swords through the flesh. Just like Diana.

Even though Diana is stronger than Hercules (and swifter than Mercury!).

Tell me you guys won't be thinking of Diana in place of Herc when watching this film! I know I will.

@rustyroy: I think of the Scorpion King every time I see the any trailers or pictures.

@natvin-Also, I think Odysseus was a bigger hero of Greek Mythology, considering he was the main hero in the tale Achilles appeared in (I don't blame you, I blame that goddamn Brad Pitt...)

HOW could I think of WW when watching Hercules's movie?

Why is this Hercules thread in a WW forum?

    ANSWER:

Because we're talking about Greek Mythology here.

and since we don't have a WW movie yet, I just thought maybe we could try to IMAGINE. And the closest thing that would allow us to do this is to look at her predecessors in Greek Mythology. Hercules is primary among those mythological heroes. Him & WW have several things in common. They're both super strong heroes (although she's stronger than him!) who fight for the oppressed.

Another reason why I put him in a WW forum is to remind all you WW fans the reason, the essence, of why WW was created. Yes, she's a mythological hero like Herc, but with the difference being that she's a feminine protector. And THAT is what makes all the difference. Hooyah, William Marston!

WW shouldn't be stronger then Herc.

but hopefully its a good movie. I like the Rock(slim but muscle Rock more) and hopefully it set off a chain of great action movies.

    The HERCULES movie was great!

Personally, I feel the writer of this movie had Wonder Woman on the brain. They played it so Hercules's father being Zeus was only a legend. Just like Azzarello played with WW's clay birth as a legend, not fact.

The movie also mentioned 'bondage' and 'voluptuous' in the same sentence as 'Amazons'. AND they showed a child repeating that sentence, yet he didn't know what it really meant. JUST like in real life when kids read the Golden Age WW, but didn't really understand the bondage!

Speaking of which, don't miss next year's film "Fifty Shades of Grey"!! Mmmmmm!

Also, they showed Hercules as a powerful being, yet he could be pierced by swords and other sharp objects. Hopefully this will show WW readers what it's like with WW and why.

Yes, she's powerful. But she's still vulnerable to mortal harm like us. That's why she needs the bracelets to deflect weapons!

Actually, the Greek name is Heracles. Hercules is the Roman equivalent.

Heracles was far from the greatest hero of ancient Greece. He was a ego-maniacal "twat" that murdered alot of people including his own family.

    Ego-maniacal “twat”????

Yes Hercules killed his wife and children thinking in his delusional state that they were enemies that were trying to kill him. That was the reason for his 12 labors to make amends for that tragic episode.

Is there no forgiveness?? Even a woman who wakes up in the middle of the night hearing noises and gets a gun and uses it for protection just to turn on the lights to find out it was her husband or her own child is forgiven.

And yes in myth Hercules killed many famous Amazon warriors, but it was in battle and it was with Amazons who were warriors who had a name for themselves because of their ability to kill their enemies (male) in battle.

Even Super Man was forgiven when he attacked earth thinking he was Darkseid’s son.

Twat? Well you see, like any Greek myth, its interpreted. In one version, he's a villain who killed innocents. In another, he's quite the savior. Just like in one version, WW is a tender loving counselor. In another version, she's a head chopping warrior.

    Anyway...

What'd you think of the Hercules movie? I still can't get over the "Buxom amazons and bondage" comment!
The screen writer HAD to have had Wonder Woman on the brain!

Also cool was the scene where a warrior used his axes to deflect the arrows shot at a boy. Much like WW's bracelets.

But you know, what was REALLY intriguing was when Hercules listened to a young boy tell him about his 9th Labor of getting the Girdle of Hippolyta and the ""Buxom amazons and bondage". When Herc asked the boy if he understood what that meant, the boy said no.

This funny scene was obviously a reflection of how children of the 1940's read WW, but didn't really understand the bondage in that comicbook!

once again proving that you can't comprehend what's written ... look again and note that I made no commentary on how powerful she actually was, simply that the poster I was responding to was inaccurate in his comment that WW should not be as strong as Hercules. Now go sit in the corner and let the grown ups talk.

How was he inaccurate though, he wrote that she's stronger than Hercules but for whatever reason he believes she shouldn't be. It's your comprehension skills that need improvement or perhaps you're past your prime and dementia's kicking in. And then obviously you care enough about people's perception of her strength to fetch some old scans

and I was using old scans (deliberately) to illustrate that she's ALWAYS been depicted as stronger than Hercules. I know you are trying to be clever and bust my chops because you think "I'm out to get you" ... but seriously grow up

pushed against a wall? by a comment from you? whatever. What would you like me to say here? I posted a couple of scans that illustrated part of WWs history to prove a point to another poster? Am I supposed to somehow feel like that was wrong because I've said in the past (and still believe) that feat driven storytelling is stupid? Are we all supposed to believe that by posting a scan it somehow negates that I think judging a character's value has nothing to do with feats and I think people who obsess with them are silly?

Also you don't even understand what a "straw man argument" is ... if I was making one I'd be turning this around to a totally unrelated subject and say something like "your attack on my post proves you are a sexist because I am defending WW" What I'm really doing is being dismissive (or more likely contemptuous) of your post, because it had no point.

then don't jump into a conversation I was having with a different poster about a topic you weren't involved in at all.

Funny enough I wasn't referring to either you or agent41 with my comments about feats, you just decided that's who I was talking about. I was actually referring to a huge contingent of posters on the battle boards and a long string of feat conversations that were going on over there. But since you never asked about it and just leapt to the conclusion that I was talking about you I didn't care to correct you. As usual you interpret before you read.

EDIT: Actually I did refer to agent41 as one of the "feat monkeys" I'll own that

    @ archizoom & csg_cl:

That's quite enough! Just to clarify: Kasino said that WW SHOULDN'T be stronger than Herc, not that she ISN'T. Then CSG_CL tried to promote WW by reemphasizing that her superior strength has always been a part of her mythos. Period. The End.

    No more insults, people.

Anyway, back to the topic of Hercules...

I found out that this Hercules movie was actually a part of a comicbook written by a guy who tried to write Greek Mythology from the perspective of the people involved and how it might've "really" played out.

And yet he decided to attach the element of bondage to the Amazons! LOL

@natvin: scans are online ... There are several image banks out there. The first one was from Silver age years and the second was Golden Age.

GA WW had many bondage themes so it's not that ridiculous a premise for the Amazons. And I'll say to you the same thing I said to Archizoom, if you don't like interactions between other posters don't jump into them.
