    Wonder Woman

Character » Wonder Woman appears in 8719 issues.

The Amazon princess, blessed with god-like super abilities, Wonder Woman is one of Earth's most powerful defenders of peace, justice, and equality and a member of the Justice League. She is considered an archetype for many heroines outside of comic book. Her initial origin depicted her as a clay baby brought to life by patron goddess Aphrodite, but in recent years she has been depicted as the daughter of Zeus and Amazon queen Hippolyta.

If you managed to avoid the massive spoiler from DC Comics and read the second issue of Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang's Wonder Woman last week, then you probably noticed that two issues in and the creative team has already made some significant changes to Wonder Woman's history. The most notable (which had previously been spoiled by DC) was confirmed at the end of the issue, but we'll get to that later.

    No Caption Provided

So what parts of Wonder Woman's history have changed and how much has stayed the same, based on what we can tell from what we read in Wonder Woman #2? The series' writer Brian Azzarello has gone on the record stating that when he took on the writing responsibilities of Wonder Woman he didn't go back and re-read each and every one of her character appearances. Instead, Azzarello has left himself plenty of room to discover Diana for himself. According to him, this Wonder Woman is less about helping people understand the last 70 years of the character, and more about reading a good story.

I'm not interested in giving anybody a better understanding of Wonder Woman, coming from a past perspective at all. We're all about telling a good story -- right now. Hopefully, long-term Wonder Woman fans will enjoy the ride as much as the new fans it appears we have brought to the book. We just did New York Comic Con and I've never heard so many people say, "This is the first time I've ever tried Wonder Woman." People just buy Superman or Batman because that's what they buy. With Wonder Woman it was like, "This is something new and I want to try it."

Obviously, Azzarello is giving himself plenty of elbow room to re-tell Wonder Woman's history; and that means taking some creative liberties. As each issue is released not only do we get thrown into an exciting new story, but we also get to re-discover the character and note the changes that have been made -- and that's pretty cool. Here is what we noticed was different in the second issue.

    == TEASER ==

    Hippolyta is...blonde!

    No Caption Provided

If you were a fan of the Wonder Woman television series starring Lynda Carter, then you might recall that Diana's mother on the television series (played by actress Cloris Leachman) was not a brunette, but a blonde! Perhaps artist Cliff Chiang took some notes from that portrayal of the character, or from Hippolyta's appearance in the Warner Brothers animated version of the character when he decided to make her a blonde in the new Wonder Woman series. There are several comic book incarnations that depict Hippolyta as a blonde, but the more recent versions of her character have shown her having black hair, similar to Diana's.

    Wonder Woman vs. The Amazons?

    No Caption Provided

Was I the only one that sensed some hostility between Wonder Woman and her "sisters"? Within the first few pages of the second issue it seemed pretty obvious that the Amazons have something against their Queen's daughter -- but what? Wonder Woman very quickly became hostile with one of the Amazon's and threatened to kill them after she landed on the island. In the scene she says, "Try it and be certain I'll separate your soul from the land of the living." When Diana said this, it isn't as though she didn't know who she was speaking to. It's not like there's anyone else on Paradise Island other than the Amazons.

    No Caption Provided

In a later scene Diana is approached by Aleka, an Amazon warrior and the banter between them isn't necessarily hostile, but the two do share a very...well..."snarky" exchange. Perhaps it was in good fun, but there's sometimes truth to a little hostility, right? If there is some underlying tension between Diana and the Amazons, could it be attributed to the reason she initially left the island? Wonder Woman's departure from Paradise Island was attributed to Steve Trevor's accidental crash landing; but how much of that classic story will be consistent in Brian Azzarello's retelling of Wonder Woman's origin? What if she left the island on bad terms? It will be interesting to see.

    Strife's Origins

    No Caption Provided

For the first story arc, Azzarello has brought in Strife, otherwise known as Eris, to stir some trouble on Paradise Island. However, Strife's origins are slightly different (based on the revelations we saw in the second issue) from her previous appearances in Wonder Woman's series. According to her previous character appearances (loosely based on Greek mythology), Strife was not Zeus and Hera's child as she is presented in the second issue of Wonder Woman, but rather one of Ares' children, making Zeus her grandfather.

    Zeus, You Are The Father

Probably the biggest reveal thus far is the fact that Zeus is now Wonder Woman's biological father -- something that was originally revealed by DC prior to the issue release. Not only does this change Wonder Woman's history (she is no longer brought to life by the Goddesses after Hippolyta made her out of clay), but this also means that she is a demi-goddess and Ares' sister. It will be interesting to see just how much involvement he will have in the series.

Regardless of what happens, Azzarello's plans are to write an interesting story; and so far, we think he's done a fine job. What do you think about all the changes being made to Wonder Woman and her supporting cast of characters?

In Greek myth, Zeus was the father of Ares who was the father of Hippolyta who (now going into comic books) is the mother of Wonder Woman. So that would make Wonder Woman both Hippolyta's daughter and aunt.

I think you misread issue 2, Sara. Strife/Eris repeatedly calls Hera mother and she refers to Ares as her brother.

EDIT: Whoops, I misread that. You're right Sara, sorry!

Given that DC has been putting out all od Sony's video game spin off comics (God of War, Uncharted, and inFAMOUS) getting a God of War/Wonder Woman spin off isn't too much of a stretch. And, with Diana's new direction, could be kind of awesome.

I think you misunderstood the scene where Diana arrives at Paradise Island. There was no hostility directed towards Diana. There was hostility directed towards what the Amazons thought was an unknown intruder. Once Diana announces herself, the amazons recognize her and immediately bow.

Its actually better if Azzarello is trying to steer clear of old DCU continuity and just focusing on a good story, because in the end this New 52 has done nothing but pretty much sweep most of the old multiverse's history into the dustbin. We see new concepts and ideas coming out of all of our characters as New 52 progresses, so why shouldn't there be drastic and radical changes to Wonder Woman? That being said, let's break down what we have seen as far as changes. Blonde Hippolyta? Awesome! Even if how she's drawn here she tends to look a little like Valkyrie. Wonder Woman at odds with her Amazon sisters? In truth that's nothing new. One need only look into stories such a The Circle to see that she has been at odds with them before. With Strife's new origins as well as Diana's, it seems like a lot of this is drama between family members. After all, Zeus is Diana's baby daddy now, which means she's at odds with her mother in law Hera (oh how it reminds me of Hercules: The Legendary Journey), as well as her brother Ares. In the end this makes Strife what...Diana's niece? Loads and loads of family in-fighting ahead I say! Great changes I say as long as nothing is too radically altered to make WW no longer recognizable, and thus far that does not seem the case here.

I always liked the (animated) Justice Leagues idea that Ares was Diana's (secret) dad.. &all the mystery &controversy that came with Hippolyta even bein involved with him in the first place.. (esp if shes technically his step mother?) &the slight hints of a darkness within Diana thats possibly been inherited from her evil war loving father.. I always hoped theyd make THAT version canon..coz theres so much potential for conflict &character development there

This is why I'm loving this book write now. Azzarello isn't trying to retell Wonder Woman's History that we already know. He's trying to tell a story his own way. Something that has never been done for WW. Kudos to Azzarello. I like WW even more now.

Right!? Seriously. I hate this change simply for the fact than now she is just another demi goddess. Before she was magical and there was a mystical element to her.

What does everyone think about the other Amazons? It looks like Phillipus, Euboea, Artemis and the other established ladies might not have been included.

As pointed out in DC Women Kicking Ass, the color of Hippolyta's hair changes from version to version, so not a big deal. The issue I have is having Diana being the daughter of Zeus. You can give her a father if you want, but can't you try something original?

I agree, having her be the daughter of Zeus makes for great drama since the Amazons are supposed to be followers of Hera and yet Hippolyta bore a daughter from her husband, AND Diana has a far more personal connection to her old nemesis Aries now that they are related by blood...It would be kinda cool if Aries offhandedly said something like "every few thousand years father spawns a half mortal brat like you just to SPITE me...What was the last one's name? Oh yes, Hercules...I wonder if you'll die screaming like our brother did." Aries was ALWAYS the jealous sort in the old myths, so him hating on Wonder Woman just like he once did on Herc, to me, would be really cool. And Zeus has SO MANY other offspring, anyone of which could be Diana's allies or enemies. Besides, Diana being born of a god and an amazon somehow makes her seem more "real" to me than simply being molded from enchanted clay (wonder how the other Amazons were born now for that matter or if they're all still clayborn beings), demi-godhood just makes her seem more epic.

Wonder Woman is by FAR my favorite from the new52! Long time WW fan and I'm loving that it looks like so many people are jumping on board! She is a fantastic character who deserves just as much love as bats and supes. Loving the take on the greek gods as well! Ngl I don't even care about the bird feet, I would ravage Hermes... Just saaaying.

    That Aleka looks like Artmis!

This all looks pretty on the same vibe/tone as past GOOD Wonder Woman runs like George Perez', John Byrnes', Greg Rucka's, Gail Simone's...

This book has been awesome so far, it's one of my top 5 favorites out of the relaunch, and I never thought I'd say that about Wonder Woman

I wish they would give Wonder Woman a real overhaul, starting with her suit, it just doesn’t feel authentic or something in this era.

Wait, is that thumbnail seriously Wonder Woman fighting a tentacle monster? I mean, I know it's a giant octopus, but SERIOUSLY?

If they wanted a god to be her father, they should have used Hades. It would've been a nice nod to the Justice League episode "Paradise Lost".

Zeus is Wonder Woman's biological dad now? Such a thing comes out when your creativity cropped out.
