Wonder Woman #31. A confusing adventure that shows promise.
Last WW review! Writer Brian Azzarello and artist Gordon Sudzuka join Wonder Woman and the Amazons on Paradise Island readying for War. However, with Wonder Woman's plans of changing the society that the Amazons have established; not all of them are too excited about this change.
The Good
First of all, I loved the cover for this 31st issue of Wonder Woman. It's simple yet beautifully crafted. I enjoy how the cover does reflect the events that are going on, currently, in Wonder Woman's life. And it ultimately just looks really cool.
This issue story was enjoyable, to say the least. I liked how Brian Azzarello is setting up this big change in the Amazon's way of life. It's interesting to see how he molds Wonder Woman into this leadership position [as queen] and how it's changing her character greatly. Azzarello is one of the greatest Wonder Woman writers on the planet, and what he did with this issue's story at making Wonder Woman want to change the Amazons way of life [for the better] was really cool to see.
The artwork by Gordon Sudzuka is perfect. His artwork/style fits the mythological nature/character of Wonder Woman and her world, like a glove.
The Bad
While the focus on Wonder Woman remaking how the Amazons view their lifestyles is great and all, Brian Azzarello could've focused mainly on that and not the war element as well. It was confusing how the two story element jumped back-and-forth, and never really felt like they were part of the same story. The beginning was greatly confusing as it involved Dio and Hermes sitting in a restaurant and eventually seeing a bunch of souls roaming around the living. It turned out that the souls of Hell were released, and that story was eventually forced to connect to Wonder Woman's problem of getting the Amazons to change their lifestyle. In the end, my experience with reading this issue was handicapped because of this fact.
The Verdict
Wonder Woman is probably one of my my favorite books in the New 52 . Brian Azzarello really recreates how Wonder Woman should be portrayed. So I recommend this book and issue, even though it has minor problems! 3 out of 5.
