Trouble in Paradise.
After becoming the new god of war and Queen of the Amazons, everything is not going as well as Diana hoped. Written by Brian Azzarello with artwork by Gordon Sudzuka. Next WW review!
The Good
When reading this issue, you get a feeling of how future issues will pan out. After Wonder Woman's speech last issue about rising up and taking back Olympus, she's now got to deal with the needs of her people. The Amazons aren't all too happy about Diana replacing their Queen or for even being Queen in that matter. They think that she doesn't have their ideology and only wants to make big changes to their way of life, which is true.
I like seeing this conflict that Diana is having. It shows that even as she's about to face a threat that could kill her, she's still facing a threat back at home with her sisters not wanting to follow her orders. Brian Azzarello does a great job at introducing this new found power that Diana has and how she doesn't fully know how to use it properly. However, she's willing to try to help the Amazons move forward as a people.
The artwork by Gordon Sudzuka is great. The art style works perfectly with the colors and overall tone/theme of this series.
The Bad
While seeing this conflict with Diana and her people is great and all, I don't like how the speech from last issue was misleading. I was expecting the Amazons to (for a lack of better words) blindly follow Diana's orders because she's the Queen now. Though that's not the way this issue turned out, and it turned out quite nicely with it following the way Brian Azzarello wanted it to, the big speech at the end of last issue could've been used for this one. Since the Amazons don't fully trust Diana, Diana could've used the speech at the end of issue 29 for this issue to get the Amazons on her side. Instead though, this issue felt like it took two steps backwards instead of forwards.
The Verdict
This is a great series with an excellent creative team! If you like Wonder Woman, Greek Mythology, or just female superheroes, I suggest you pickup this issue. You'll feel right at home even if you haven't read a single issue and it's easy to understand everything that's happened recently. 3 out of 5.
