razzatazz's Wonder Woman #261 - Quest to The Palace at the Edge of Time! review

    Too much of too much

This particular issue (from more than ten years before I was born) is sort of a catch all for what can be wrong with a Wonder Woman type of story.  Diana has been subject to a public witchhunt led by Martin Markham for the previous few issues.  She has just been released from jail to find Mars (the god, not the planet) in the New York City harbour with the plan of destroying buildings until the US government agrees to make him supreme ruler of the world.  Direct battle is avoided, Diana is sure she will lose, so instead she seeks out her mother's advice.  She finds Paradise Island inacessible but Aphrodite tells her to seek the aid of Zeus at the Palace at the Edge of Time.  I guess it was an oversight of the writers at the time that Mars is Roman and Aphrodite is Greek but not such a big deal.  So Aphrodite grants the invisible plane with the ability to travel at faster than light speed so she can quickly travel to the Palace.  There she finds Zeus missing, but she does find something which can stop Mars, reverse all the damage and make people forget of the campaign against her (all in three panels.)  In short the book loses from not knowing whether to focus on mythology or science fiction, and thus seems a bit disjointed.  The cure-all wonder device in the last few pages is a bit too underwhelming to wrap up a multi story arc.  There was a decent scene where she is in a sort of dog fight with the hell-hounds, but even then it makes me happy that modern Wonder Woman has the ability of flight without an invisible plane.
