razzatazz's Wonder Woman #202 - Fangs of Fire! review

Introducing two nobodies

This issue is a bit of an anomaly.   Diana, I-Ching and Catwoman find themselves in an alternate dimension.  The dimension has an interesting name – Nehwon, which as an expert in Zatanna spells I recognized as the words no when (I guess a play on nowhere) spelled backwards.  I assume this was intentional on the part of the writer.  They soon run across Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser as the two of them try to steal the gem from Diana and company.  I guess Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser were meant to have an ongoing series (Swords Against Sorcery) and this was their introduction to the DCU but I can’t find anything about them other than a miniseries in the 1990s.  Anyway the story proceeds from there, both groups team up and try to raid the fortress of a magician trying to unlock a dimensional portal, as Lu Shan (I-Ching’s evil daughter) is trying to do the same on earth.  Lu Shan is also holding Johnny so when she accidentally teleports to Nehwon the heroes make their escape and strand her there.

With so many issues in the mod girl years involving battling with barbarians or warriors in barren lands I expected more out of this issue, but in the end it was a bit of a letdown.  There was just too much going on and the resolution came too fast.  Still if you read the first part of the story arc for the fight between Catwoman and Diana, this is not a terribly difficult or long read, and worth it to wrap up the story arc.

They're not nobodies!!! They're the protagonists of several of Fritz Leiber's (one of the modern fantasy greats) more well known stories. 'Nehwon' is the realm where the stories take place.
