Looks like Darren Aronofsky’s finally locked in to direct WOLVERINE 2. Or, I guess, he's at least as locked in as you can be without officially signing a deal. Deadline’s saying that he’s already talking to Fox about starting principal photography in March. The idea is that they’d begin with all the sound stage portions in New York to be more convenient for his and Jackman’s families; then they'd move production to Japan. Sounds like Jackman enjoyed working him enough on THE FOUNTAIN that he wanted to continue the collaboration.
If this goes through, it’ll finally realize something that’s seemed inevitable for years now - - Aronofsky directing a comics based movie. Those recent, ultimately unfulfilled, rumors about him directing the new SUPERMAN movie were only the latest of what feels like a solid decade of false starts. For a long time, he was angling to direct a BATMAN: YEAR ONE adaptation with Frank Miller scripting it (his script had the infamous additions of Alfred being a garage mechanic and Jim Gordon “having a beer and cheating on his wife.”) I don’t know if that directly led to BATMAN BEGINS, but it must’ve got the ball rolling for it. == TEASER ==
He was also attached for a movie version of another Miller comic, RONIN, that’s still languishing in development hell. Though, I think he basically got to make his RONIN movie, anyway. Swap samurai for conquistadors and shape-shifting, all-knowing demons for Maya mythology and you’ll notice that THE FOUNTAIN draws a lot of inspiration from that comic.
From PI to REQUIEM FOR A DREAM to THE WRESTLER, I’ve been a big fan of Aronofsky and I think his sensibilities are just the ticket to make this interesting, as I was never particularly a fan of Wolvie’s Japanese adventures. I guess the real question now is whether he's going to get the Kronos Quartet to score this.
