You may have seen some of the set photographs of The Wolverine when the film was being shot in Australia. What we haven't seen much of, however, are close up shots of actor Hugh Jackman in costume as the popular comic book character. Many were wondering what Jackman will look like in this film and whether it would be different than his appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine since the two films are apparently unrelated. Well this weekend we got our first look at both Jackman and actress Rila Fukushima who will be playing Yukio in the film.

Yukio first appeared in WOLVERINE #1 and was considered one of the best mercenaries in the business. She acted as a hired assassin and was tasked with killing Wolverine for the Clan Yashida. She later developed feelings for Wolverine and although those sentiments weren't reciprocated, and maintained a close friendship with the character in the comics. It will be interesting to see the extent of their relationship played out on the big screen.

Will they alter the script to create a romance between the two characters? Will they become allies on screen, or will they be enemies? According to IMDB, Mariko Yashida (long considered the love of Wolverine's life in the comics) will be played by actress Tao Okamoto, although the extent of her appearance in the film is unclear. What do you think, and what would you like to see? Do you think that the movie should stay as true as possible to the original source, or that some creative liberty should be taken with these characters and their story?

@CaioTrubat: Hugh Jackman won't, he's a brilliant actor. Can't speak for the rest of the crew.

I feel like I need to be excited about this movie, but a part of me just can't get all the way there.

@Deranged Midget: That is not worries me. I am more concerned if we will see something on the same level or worse than Barakapool...

Nah, it's setting is excellent and you can't really screw up a Samurai wearing Silver.

Yup, yup, until they change the main actor there'll never be a good Wolverine film.

Looking forward to this.

Somewhat.

Sorta.

In a 'eh, it might be cool' kind of way.

The movie can take all the creative liberties it wants...as long as the film is well written and people aren't losing their memories from getting shot I  am good

I want this film to be entirely spoken in Japanese.

Of course, I know that won't happen. Maybe the director can use the same audio switch 'Red October' used, when going from Japanese to English. That way, audiences will be told that the characters are speaking Japanese, but are now speaking English through the magic of cinema/universal translators. lol

James Mangold is a great director. 3:10 to Yuma is a pretty good western, and Walk the Line and Cop Land are modern classics. I have faith in this, but I won't be surprised if Fox steps in and messes this up for everyone.

I still think the third one should focus on Wolverine's relationships with X-23 and Daken.

#27 Posted by johnkmccubbin91 (3481 posts) - - Show Bio

X-Men Origins Wolverine was in the right direction and could have been a great film just a shame they had to ruin Gambit and butcher Deadpool

Skeptical... and I will be skeptical until Marvel/Disney gets the rights back.

Will any of the movie rights pertaining to X-Men and the related characters, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Ghost Rider ( and possibly others) ever revert to Marvel/Disney? I really hope so. Come on Marvel/Disney, spend some $ and get your properties back where they belong, PLEASE.

Hugh, don't fail us now! Many a nerd shall be in a fury. :)

#33 Posted by SimonM7 (104 posts) - - Show Bio

If FOX could just get their act together and actually nurture a mutant universe on the big screen, I don't think the rights reverting to Marvel is necessarily essential. It's FOX' short sightedness - how they keep stomping over their own continuity and using characters haphazardly and throwing them away - that screws these films over proper.

I've been trying to dissect why, exactly, XO: Wolverine - seemingly a sure fire hit that we'd basically SEEN work in the X-Men films - ended up such a disaster, and I honestly think it may be impossible to focus so squarely on just Wolverine.

I know, there were a bajillion supporting characters in the first film, but they were glorified cameos, let's be honest. The only thing really propelling the first movie forward was the motivation (albeit sometimes difficult to discern) of Logan himself. With "nothing to lose" as it were (hence no investment for the audience) and going up time and again against an enemy that he could stab - and that could stab him - infinite times without ever having changed the outcome or the direction of the storyline, it put all its eggs in the one, linear, uneventful basket. I think Hugh Jackman is great, and I feel genuine agony seeing him do his outmost with what he was stuck with, but every interaction in that film is an ACTION HERO WOOOO one except the Silver Fox stuff - which, bundled with the opening montage, I genuinely feel is the most compelling part of the film.

The X-Men films provided such a lush environment for Wolverine to be inserted into. He interacted with Jean, he interacted with Xavier, he interacted with an entire, established situation that was alien to him, and most importantly he interacted with Rogue. There was such warmth and texture and story there. XO: Wolverine is a cold Dolph Lundgren vehicle where everyone is an action robot.

Basically, putting Hugh Jackman in the shot and yelling BE AWESOME FOR TWO HOURS! is not the way to make a compelling Wolverine film. It needs a supporting cast that interacts with him in a MEANINGFUL way, not just a billion super humans flipping out. I hear people go HARD R!! as if limbs flying will make a difference. It won't. Punisher: War Zone lost heart and gained flying limbs, it's never a fair trade.

But then I guess there are people to whom limbs flying is totally what they want from a Wolverine film, and the lack of flying limbs was their only gripe with the first one. To each their own I guess.

I'd love nothing more than to have The Wolverine be good. I wish I could say I'm cautiously looking forward to it, but I'm not. I'm stoked, and I will fall down just as hard if this sucks. Looking at the cast, knowing what it's - if loosely - based on, it could definitely have that character depth and interaction that grounds it and lends it humanity, but it could also end up another 2 hour spectacle of super humans flipping out. I guess at least this time when Wolvie stabs a guy, it might actually make a difference.

Red hair on Yukio REALLY doesn't put my faith behind this movie :/ Maybe I'm just overreacting but Yukio's supposed to be ronin samurai for the Yashida Clan...not anime bright color hair cutsey wootsey. Again maybe I'm overreacting but that just really stood out to me.

WOLVERINE deserves a good movie. None so far have given him any justice...

No, it's not just you. Here's to hoping that's not, somehow, Yukio. Otherwise, it doesn't bode well for the film if that's the feel they're going for with such a key character...

Agreed. Although, First Class wasn't great but it was certainly a sign to the right direction.

As much as I would love to see this being a great Wolverine movie, I'm not going to try be excited. After being letdown by the last Wolverine and X-Men 3, I have learnt not to build my hopes up. Because chances are I'll just end up getting disapointed.

I nearly fainted as I saw the lady with the red hair. Please, I hope it's not Yukio. Don't butcher her character. When it comes to Yukio having red hair, my respect for 'creative liberty' ends.

@SimonM7: I second that.

WUT. Don't even say things like that.

The moment I see anyone but Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine will be the moment I give up on X-Men, nay any movies by 20th Century Fox forever.

#49 Posted by SupremeHyperion (1390 posts) - - Show Bio

here's an idea...... keep the story as close to the source as possible since us comic fans are the ones who get the most excited for these movies. You ruined Wolverine once with origins, don't do it again....please
