Just a little curious, does Logan and those with his level of regeneration actually still need to breathe?

Since the thing were Nitro blew all his soft tissues off in the Civil War he still came back despite being nothing but an adamantium skeleton. Question arose for me when X-23 made me realise that neither of them are sound swimmers because of the metal (dunno if adamantium weighs the same as lead or aluminium), but the issue where it came up it wasnt revealed if Laura would just sink to the bottom before walking back to shore or if she was in risk of drowning.

X-23 as far as i remember only has her claws coated in adamantium not her entire skeleton unless that has bn recently changed.
Wolverine has an added 98 lbs from his adamantium skeleton, he weighs near 300 lbs.
Wolverine can swim just fine, it is just slightly harder for him but his healing factor compensates for that keeping him from getting tired.
Logan has swam from the bottom of the ocean to the surface and back to shore,  the only thing is that he dislikes swimming and has anxiety issues with drowning.

Wolverine's healing factor actually allows him to go a good while without Oxygen the problem is that it hurts like hell for Wolverine as he is still conscious.
Wolverine feels his lungs pop and regenerate in a cycle of oxygen deprivation and depth pressure. He also feels his brain shut down leaving just the necessary functions and operating with the most basic animal instincts. He feels the neurons pop and his body starving but the healing factor simply prolongs the agony of dying slowly by drowning eventually his healing factor will shut down but not before making him feel every drowning sensation and than more...

that is why he has anxiety issues with swimming since he has felt it 1st hand and he "believes" that is one way to kill him but he doesnt know for sure...

Well she has, but i guess to her, swimming is like if we strapped small weights to our arms and legs, what sort of strain it causes will depend on how much Adamantium weighs. (Might ofcourse be cancelled out by Laura's natural strength from always carrying them around).

But as you say, he can drown if he doesnt reach the surface in time.

he "believes" he can drown not that it is a fact, he doesnt know for sure and simply assumes he can.
he has also bn underwater with his throat ripped out for over an hour as well...

the weight in her claws isnt enough to offset and hamper her swimming ability.. real life marines swim with full gear that exceed her weight without any problem..
she can swim fine or should be able to since Wolverine and Sabretooth have swam in the ocean for extended period of time.

Actually nitro would've had to leave at least a small bit of organic matter unless wolverine is magic (please for the love of god marvel don't make him magic)

he already was to an extend decades ago early 80's

he is the right hand of God, his champion.
His adamantium is suppose to interact negatively with magic energy..
He is suppose to have bn taught Zen Mystic  MA training and understanding...

@castleking: We just gotta ignore that, the writers do and its one of the very few things they're doing right at marvel currently

you shouldnt ignore established attributes of the character for convenience.
i actually want his basic abilities to be recognized as respect toward the original writers.
He has centuryof MA training and zen Mystic insight but they ignore it when it should be recognized.

do you remember the ancient monk master who helped Wolverine and Archangel get a portion of the mystic earth blood to heal psylocke?
He knew logan and has a shared past with him and even reminded him  to see  the world as a Zen practitioner in order for him to navigate the mystic realm they were entering and not ask questions he should already know...

"think Logan like you did when you were a samurai, one must enter in order to exit and some such........
in old adventures Logan was shown from time to time to have some understanding of certain mystic beings having fought them or known them, yet they ignore all this  in order to keep him in his dumb brute phase which makes it easier to write rather than let him shine and take down groups of hero and villains that would be fodder to him just so they can use wolverine for sales and tarnish his past history and current character that is wolverine

Well magic Wolverines sounds fun :) Seriously though, I am positive most of Logans brain survived the blast as he was giving a running narrative of his state of healing, like noting that eyes always look longer to regenerate and such.

Actually Laura can't swim, atleast she admitted she wasnt any good at it and needed the nearby sharks to get back to the surface in last months issue of X-23 (the one with the pirates).

well, that is just her own lack of experience and not something that is shared by guys like Wolverine or Sabretooth with adamantium.

True, but it's worth noting Laura isnt as old as either of the two, or generally described to have superhuman strength, thought she will have to some degree.

It's called bone marrow, and it is protected by Wolverine's Adamantium bones. Unless someone completely destroys his skeleton, then he will always have the necessary base to regen from.

Now on the breathing issue. Wolverine got his throat ripped out and thrown into (I think) the Hundson, and he stayed under for approximately an hour, when he fought Tiger Shark and got stuck in a coral reef, he theorized that his healing factor would keep him alive underwater indefinitely... it would just be in a state of perpetual drowning that would be very unpleasant, and once Punisher completely incinerated his chest cavity / abdomen with a rocket launcher leaving nothing by exposed skeleton, and Wolverine was able to remain conscious and talk, seemingly without his lungs (and majority of his organs). Take from that what you will.
