What's Opera, Bub?
I got this $1.75. with shipping the total was five dollars. This was the best five bucks Ive ever spent.
I’ve done a lot of backtracking over Mike Mignola’s career. He has done a lot of work that goes forgotten amongst comic fans. Cosmic Odyssey with Jim Starlin. Doctor Doom/Doctor Strange: Triumph & Torment. Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. “Gotham by Gaslight” is probably what he’s best known for aside from Hellboy and its spin-offs.
This is one of the best Wolverine stories I’ve ever read. Logan is going home after visiting the Opera when a cyborg assassin confronts him. Quickly defeating him, Logan smells the wilds of the savage land on the corpse
Then he’s off on a gyroplane. He fights a t-rex, he mingles with cavemen who make fun of his height, and as the cover reveals, he duels with Apocalypse. Mignola’s art beautifully captures Logan’s expressions, the scenery is robust, and I was pleased by the little touches that really sold the story.
This is a far cry from the exaggerated stories of Wolverine plowing through a hundred ninjas or shrugging off an atomic bomb. This is Logan in his heyday, still subtle and fun. Aside from that, and with all respect to Frank Franzetta and Frank Cho, the thonged buttocks of Logan’s cavewoman companion didn’t need to be so obviously displayed on the cover.
I’d choose this over Enemy of the State or all of the recent Weapon X comics Marvel has put out. This is a comic that makes me love comics.
