Wolverine: Origins # 28 - Dark Deception: Prologue

I have a love/hate relationship with Wolverine.  He should be a great character but his overuse works against him.  The enigma of Logan's past helped to give him his popularity.  Now that he remembers everything, he seems to have lost some of his edge.  Wolverine: Origins sounded like it'd be the Wolverine comic to get because we'd finally be getting all the answers.  I have to admit that the way Steve Dillon drew eyes freaked me out a little bit.

I've managed to continue reading even though there have been many times I would ask myself why.  I haven't been able to figure out what the problem is.  I don't think it's because of Daniel Way.  The first two issues of Deadpool were great.  Way is responsible for giving us Daken.  I have to say I'm not a fan of Daken.  And then there's this Romulus dude.  It's almost too convenient that we have this major baddie guy that's been hiding behind the scenes all this time and is just now becoming more active.

Each month I continue to be torn whether or not I should just drop this title.

Enter Mike Deodato.  I love his art.  Rain Beredo's muted colors further captures the mood Daniel Way's script calls for.  Although when Deodato drew Wolverine's first encounter with the Hulk, he wasn't wearing the silly whisker mask.  Maybe he felt he needed to make an improvement.  He also remembers what most artist forget, Wolverine is not a tall guy.  Daken is seen to be clearly towering over Logan.  That's great.  Deodato also draws the Hulk so well. 

This issue goes along to dropping some bombs about why Wolverine has been in certain places and how he caught Professor X's attention.  It's a ballsy move on Way's part, tweaking what little has already been established in Wolverine's history.  So I think I can say that I am finally getting interested again in Origins.  Hopefully the Daken/Romulus business will be resolved quickly.  This issue also leads into X-Men: Original Sin.  Yay.

I am a little intrigued by the small revelations we're getting.  It's not quite enough to keep me hooked.  The addition of Deodato is keeping me around.
