Simply Not Engaging
I expected little from this, but it was a freebie when downloading another, much better comic, so I figured I'd give it the benefit of the doubt.
This was mistake number one.
This is, simply put, a disinteresting narrative. We, as the audience, are given little, if anything, to care about or grasp on to. Wolverine is being attacked by ninjas, but he's done that a million times. He's got arrows sticking out of him, but his healing factor makes that almost inconsequential. And the villain? Sabretooth; you know, not like we've seen that song and dance a million times.
It's actually pretty unclear as to why any of this is happening. Wolverine talks to us through incredibly vague and monotonous dialogue boxes, feeling both unnatural and detached, leaving me wanting more from him as a character as well as interaction with others beyond stabbing them.
The art looks nice enough, but it's no consolation or replacement for a well written story. I was rather surprised, seeing as Jason Aaron is the pen behind this, but I've never cared much for his take on Wolverine and the X-Men anyways.
Also, the digital comic aspect does little for the book itself; it actually felt a little awkward and jarring for me, as I really enjoy seeing the layout of each page rather than having the pictures move for me.
Ultimately, this just isn't worth the price. There's little to enjoy here, and the ending is pretty awful, a textbook example of really dumb and obnoxious cliffhanger endings. Don't waste your money or time.
