A delight from start to finish
After surviving the attack by the new Hellfire Club, things calm down to some level of normality at the Jean Grey School for Gifted Mutants. Wolverine introduces some new students that make quite the impact and a special guest gives some insight into some potential future events.
Good
The more I read this book the more I enjoy it. The overall fun tone mixed with a background hum of dread makes for a great combination. Wolverine makes for a interesting leader because the decisions he’s making are all well intentioned but may lead to disaster very quickly. Added to the fact that he is still actively taking part in the actions of X-Force may come around to bite him very soon.
The cast of characters at the school is a cool mix of oddities, from Broo, the young Brood Alien to Kid Gladiator and the latest addition of a young Apocalypse looking child who all his class mates are curious about. Then there is Quentin Quire, who is a brilliant class prankster, who is very entertaining to read.
The surprise appearance of Deathlok was an incredible delight. I really didn’t expect this guy to appear in any comic this decade let alone this one. Thankfully his appearance wasn’t just a throwaway sight gag but offered some insight into where this book’s direction might go. I always enjoy the dystopian future’s that always seem to be predicted in X-men books, and seeing this new team all grown up was a cool scene.
Bad
While there is nothing wrong with this issues art, Chris Bachalo will be missed. It always throws me off a bit when a series changes artist between issues, some of the tone of those first three issues has been lost.
A small personal negative for me was the inclusion of Angel. I haven’t read any of the Uncany X-Force series (which is very silly I know) and so I have know idea how he’s ended up this way, and of course it’s a major plot point. So I was a little confused with his appearance and state (Please don’t spoil anything for me).
Verdict
A great issue, this series continues at a great pace and it continues to hint at possible (awesome) stories later on. This is a very good series.
