The more emotional side of Age of Ultron

This is not a series I actually buy my brother does and I haven’t been keeping up with it I know basically what happens but the series isn’t as good as it was earlier on but this is different this is an Age of Ultron tie-in and as you can probably tell from the cover the only member of this boo that appear in this is Wolverine but I read this for the Age of Ultron and nothing else (okay Paco Medina’s art I love it)

    Plot

Sue Storm and Wolverine are flying in Nick Fury’s car in the past but it breaks down and they have to get a new battery from a SHIELD bunker but when they get their they find SHIELD is experimenting on something and one of them jumps in Wolverines mouth.

Right let me say this first before I say how good or bad this was (although you can probably tell from the rating) that cover is a lie this is comics it’s normally a lie but when I saw that cover in the solicits I went nuts for it I wanted it so much the cover itself is amazing but nothing like that happens in this issue none of the Avengers appear not even Hank Pym makes an appearance. I was really disappointed as that looked like a story with loads of potential if it was explored but instead we get a fairly slow boring story that is confusing with the ending and also it just feels a waste of a tie-in this is the bit between Wolverine stealing Nick Fury’s car and going after Hank Pym. I do however feel that there is a message in this book that was only really glanced on in Age of Ultron #6 so I’m happy for this point of the issue I also liked how we see the emotion behind this event with Sue Storm as I feel like in the main series the whole point that her family died but there still alive here wasn’t explored in great detail so to see it here is great and it made this issue feel more interesting.

First off I want to point out a few things

    1. Like I said the cover is a lie

    2. Do not buy this for Wolverine and the X-men please don’t you are going to be disappointed with it. This issue has absolutely nothing to do with the ongoing book, get this if you’re reading Age of Ultron just thought I’d mention that point as I expect quite a few people are disappointed because they bought it for the normal book.

    3. This will lose anyone who just picks it up the shelves unless they are reading Age of Ultron #6 so only get this if you have read Age of Ultron because this is stuck in the middle of that issue and fills in the gap of that issue between the two previously mentioned points in the story

I like how this fills in the gap for the two bits in Age of Ultron #6 it made a good point to focus the issue on and it didn’t feel that forced overall and it makes for an interesting exploration of what was going on in that period of time in the Marvel universe and it is noticeable the differences in time period in this issue.

There is a heavy emphasis on the butterfly affect in this issue which makes perfect sense considering what they are doing in this issue and I do like how it adds tension to the story by involving this in the story as it’s the focus as there is a sort of feeling in this book of can do/ can’t do that makes this story more interesting as it meant that certain things couldn’t happen in this book and the characters were limited in their actions and this whole Butterfly affect and changing the future and this is where both the positive and negative appears in one point. The ending of this issue I will spoil but I will try first to abbreviate it but it is clever if what happens does happen because it could result in a very interesting story but it isn’t clear what Wolverine does I mean I can see two outcomes for this (which I will talk about in a second) but it is seen for a page and then virtually forgotten to complete the issue I think this would have been better as a bigger bonus sized issue or that it should have been split between two or three issues as I’m not happy with the way it ended.

Okay spoilers now avoid this paragraph if you don’t want me to ruin the story

When Wolverine and Sue Storm enter the SHIELD bunker they find some experiments and animals in a tank after a rather grotesque scene which I don’t want to talk about it turns out that the aliens are the brood and by the look of it Wolverine creates a New form of brood or there is now a Wolverine type Brood in a SHIELD bunker somewhere. I’m not sure it isn’t explained it obviously the point of this whole sequence is to show the Butterfly affect so that Wolverine has changed the past affecting the future and that is all I know has happened the precise outcome is not known but I like how Kindt made it the focus of the issue keeping on referencing it and then actually doing it, it was a nice touch.

Probably the best bit of this issue is the focus on Sue Storm and we see the emotion and how she feels about this event and the loss of her family in a touching scene perfectly summing up Sue Storm’s character in a few words it just made it very impactful and the bit with Reed in was very touching and probably the highlight of the issue.

The problems with this issue are that it feels unnecessary it doesn’t really add that much to the overall story apart from subtly showing the butterfly affect in this book and while I like the point this happens in the Age of Ultron story I do think it isn’t needed and this tie-in was just forced in their not the point it happened was forced no but the tie-in itself just feels forced and unnecessary it just feels like this was put in to sell some money (that is the point I suppose)

The art on this was really good I’ve always liked Paco Medina and I’m happy he did this and I’m really happy he will be doing Nova soon so at least I know it will have a good penciller on it. Paco Medina’s best point for this issue is the emotion on the characters especially Sue Storm who looks like a strong character that has been through a lot and the scene when she see’s Reed is particularly well done. There is also a small fight scene that is in this book that looks really dynamic and grotesque which fits it perfectly. I do not however think that Medina does as well as Pacheco on the past scenes partly because while David Curiel’s colours are really nice but they don’t look as old or pale as in Age of Ultron and also I generally prefer Pacheco’s style but Medina did do a good job I can’t deny that.

    Verdict

I found this book was a bit unnecessary I mean the point chosen is excellent but it doesn’t feel necessary this issue it just felt thrown into show the butterfly effect I do think this was a fun story though and it did add quite a bit of emotion to the overall story and made it feel me more interesting and I loved the art so I would suggest buying this but only if you’re reading Age of Ultron otherwise stay away because you will get lost in it.
