X-Men Meets Hogwarts
Writer Jason Aaron and artist Chris Bachald bring you a new series called Wolverine and the X-Men. There's only one way to describe this comic: awesome fun!
The effects of Schism has split the X-Men into two groups. Cyclops' faction on Utopia and Wolverine's faction at Xavier's old school. In fact, Wolverine has decided to open a new school, The Jean Grey School For Higher Learning. Wolverine as Headmaster doesn't sound like it will work, but he's brought some friends to help him: Headmistress Kitty Pride, Beast as Vice Principal and designer of the futuristic school, and Iceman as a Senior Staff Member to name a few. Plus the school is made of confused adolescent mutants and aliens. With a mixed up faculty, student body, and Headmaster Wolverine leading the show, nothing can go wrong. Right? Wrong!
After getting the blessing and approval of the school from Charles Xavier, Wolverine finally opens the school. Not only is it the first day for everyone but the New York State Department of Education has sent two employees to approve the school and make sure it's safe for everyone or shut it down. Naturally, everything that can go wrong does and there seems to be no way that the State employees will approve of the new school. But as the tour ends, thinking nothing worse could happen, Kade Kilgore, the new Black King of the Hellfire Club shows up and promises to destroy the school.
Thinking that a comic series about Wolverine leading a new school of mutants doesn't sound like a recipe for success, even if Wolverine is the Batman of Marvel Comics being in every title. But this comic works and it is a success. Jason Aaron has made a comic that is funny and fun. The X-Men have been in school before but this series seems to really focus on being a school. Aaron has created the Harry Potter of X-Men. Seriously, the Jean Grey school is very similar to Hogwarts. There's something unique and weird going on in every room of the school... as well as the fact that Beast decided to turn the whole school into one big Danger Room.
However, as cool as the school is, it wouldn't be no where near as cool or as fun with a great faculty and student body. It's a great diverse mix of characters. There's some classic X-Men as well as more modern new mutants. Aaron does a great job of writing the students. It's the kind of dialogue you'd expect to hear from students in a school. There's even some parallels to the real world in that some of the mutants are racist in that there are some mutant aliens at the school.
Chris Bachalo's art on the other hand... It's different. At first, I didn't like it, I thought it was silly. But then, it really grew on me. Yes, it's different, but I think it's awesome and I think it fits. The art is just as fun as the story. And there are two great two page splashes. The first is early in the issue and shows the futuristic looking school. The second is the last two pages of the comic of the school getting torn apart. They both are cool looking!
This is definitely a lighter and fun comic. It's a change of pace from most comics and it's unique. If you wanna have fun and read a great comic, then I highly recommend this. I can't wait to see where this comic goes to in the future!
