William Moulton Marston created Wonder Woman during World War II in a reaction to what he saw as a DC Universe dominated by male characters such as Superman and Batman. Then came heroes such as Marvel's Captain America who were created as a largely patriotic reaction to the Axis forces of WWII. Marston wanted a super heroine to even the battlefield.

"He was inventing somebody like that new Superman fellow, only his character would promote a global psychic revolution by forsaking Biff! Bam! and Ka-Runch! for The Power of Love. Well," said Mrs. Marston, who was born liberated, "this super-hero had better be a woman."

Based on his wife and Olive Byrne, Moulton Marston had created one of DC's flagship superheroes and its first female heroine, Wonder Woman.
