So lately I've been catching up on the Wildstorm Universe. I've always read Gen13 and decided it was time to get into the rest of the Wildstorm books. I've come to realize that the Wildstorm Universe can be a very confusing place. The Universe recently saw a soft reboot of the entire Universe and all of the books were restarted. Shortly after that World's End hit and has left Earth in a post apocalyptic state. So no matter where you start unless you've been reading the Wildstorm books for a very long time most chances are that you're going to be confused. I know I am. So I went to the most knowledgeable person of Wildstorm on the Vine that I know of and that was Buckshot. In my questions I mentioned that we should have Wildstorm Universe Discussion thread to make it a little easier on everyone else. So here's the thread and my questions.
1. They're aware of the soft reboot that Void did on the universe? Gen13 doesn't seem to be aware but Lynch knows and it seems like some of the other WildCATS do to.
2. How do they remember Max Faraday? All that stuff happened before the reboot.
WildStorm Productions
WildStorm Productions was a founding studio at Image Comics before becoming an imprint of DC Comics in 1999. It started in 1992 by a team of comic creators - Jim Lee chiefly among them. It closed in 2010.
Wildstorm Universe Discussion Thread
Ive been away since when it was with Image, with the exception of Midnighter.
Just got back in as well, and im also pretty lost.
anyway a mod could pin this on the top of the Wildstorm forum?
thanks if so.
1. Gen 13 knows about it, at least to some degree. When they fought the Authoriteens the Intern (teen Doctor) explained to them about the reboot and how they're alive now and the whole thing with their souls. The reason they'd have to be told about it (instead of just remembering) is because they'd been dead before for a while before it happened.) It's not entirely clear who knows what, but I think there's knowledge about it. For example, Midnighter remembers killing Grifter before the reboot.
2. If they remember stuff before the reboot, they'd remember Faraday.
" @geraldthesloth: Just say something about midnighter beating a popular DC or Marvel street leveler and bait them to this thread "LOL, But I don't wannnnnnnnnnnnnnaaaaaaaaaaaa
" @geraldthesloth: I still remember when they used him frequently in battle threads and how favorite characters get mowed down like Grass, and Buckshot who is like a force of nature "If only buckshot would frequent the boards again.
" @geraldthesloth: Yeah, haven't seen much of you in animevice either "Well besides the fact that I can't stand to debate with people who try to lowball comics.
Just one particular user tbh
" I like that they've changed the teams up...like Freefall and Rainmaker being in the Authority now "That's one thing i hate, i also hate how JEt is still running with the WILDCATS
" @danhimself said:Why?" I like that they've changed the teams up...like Freefall and Rainmaker being in the Authority now "That's one thing i hate, i also hate how JEt is still running with the WILDCATS "
" I can't believe I let you use me like this! "well you finally satisfied my needs....so hopefully that helps you out
Hey, I am new to wildstorm. I like the new DV8 and I saw some good review of Wildcats here so I was wondering if it was a cool reading and newbie friendly.
I was worried that I had to read both Wildcasts and authority to follow what's going on? Looking for your advices
You can catch up on Wildcats pretty quick. Both trades are out-Wildcats: World's End Book 1 :
http://wildstormresource.wetpaint.com/page/Wildcats%3A+World%27s+End+Book+One
& Wildcats: Family Secrets
http://wildstormresource.wetpaint.com/page/Wildcats%3A+Family+Secrets+TP
I'm sure the next trade will be out soon. But issues 13-18 shouldn't be too hard to track down. issue 19 is the start of the new run and if you're completely new, it might be a little hard to follow but not too much.
You don't have to read both The Authoriy and Wildcats to understand everything but doing so will give the big picture about what's going on. Hope that helps. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. :)
Yeah, they both recently started new runs and they have been doing a good job with recapping things so you won't be lost if you go back just a little.
Alright.I'm going to give Wildcats a try.Zealot vs. Midnighter sounds interesting.
I stopped reading Authority quite a while ago.I will see if I can get into it now.
I have never heard of DV8 Gods although I think I might have seen some art for it.Are you currently reading it? Or have you read some of the issues?
Being a master of all things Wildstorm, I'm sure you've also read Planetary as well and know about the Four. They met the alternate Earth in '61 and were paving the way for its invasion, which is supposed to happen next year. Any word on whether it will or writers recognizing its importance?
I highly doubt anything from Planetary will show up. Planetary really only barely fit into the WSU to begin with. Aside from a couple crossovers there wasn't too much interaction with other WSU titles. And as far as I know, there's been no mention of post-world's end Planetary activity so I don't expect very much. However, a crisis of some sort is on the horizon and the creators seem to have a good knowledge of and appreciation for WSU history so they may surprise us. That said, the heroes of the WSU just faced an enemy from another dimension so that might not be different enough to be worth it.
So i want to start reading everything in the Wildstorm Universe, but i know literally nothing about it. I figure i should start from the start of Gen13 vol.4, The Authority vol.5, and WildCats vol.5
If i start at these places will i be lost? Or can someone please direct me to where i should start reading?
@Buckshot: Looks like youre the closest im going to get at asking an expert. where should i start?
The Armageddon Trilogy is a good place to start (all in trade):
Wildstorm: Armageddon
Wildstorm: Revelations
Number of the Beast
Of course there are tons of older stuff that are worth reading but if you just want a place to start, this is a good overview of all of the teams/characters.
Anyone else curious about what's in Hawksmoor's box? I'm kinda hoping he looked through a Door one day right into Brainiac's ship and stole some bottled cities. That would be great.
What team is Fuji on? Clearly he's on the Wildcats team, but he's on Authority covers. What's up with that. (Maybe that's what Hawksmoor has in the box?)
The WSU is a low-magic universe? I recently read some of Savant Garde and that's what one of the characters there said. The main wildstorm universe is "low-magic". Then there was that issue of The Lost Year where they find that planet parasites and they talked about that universe being low-energy (there were no superhumans because the planets energy was being eaten by the parasites) and then another issue they came across an Earth where technology and science were equal. The Savant Garde issue made me think of the other two, and I started to realize it was right. There's magic in the WSU, but not a lot. I had already noticed that telepathy was, for the most part, treated differently than in say Marvel. The characters with telepathy don't use it as freely as in Marvel and for some of them it's difficult or even painful. There are a fair amount of people with tk, but straight tp is kind of rare. I had always taken that as part of the writers' efforts to keep things manageable, because if someone has TP they can pretty much do what they want (look at Tao, and he doesn't even have TP) and with characters that are on the whole more manipulative, secretive and up to no good, the telepaths would have free reign of the place. My theory for magic is just that it makes things less real. Telepathy you can pseudo-science a reason for, but you can't do that with magic. And since the WSU likes to hang on to the real where it can, that makes sense. I think technology is the WSU's thing. It's real enough and you can fake stuff without it seeming impossible. If you look at it there a lot of tech-based or enhanced WSU characters. Don't know if they're the majority though. These are the 3 major groupings in the WSU I think:
genetics (accidentally or purposefully altered genes): comet, genfactor, alien-hybrids
technology
magic
