In Devil's Due Publishing, Snake Eyes is first seen with is family after having returned once from the war, however soon going back to it with another group. His relationship with his family is seen as close, but he has a particularly strong bond with his sister Terri. Eventually he joins the war again, where it is revealed that only him and a friend of his, Tommy Arashikage (later known as Storm Shadow) survived from a whole squad. Hurt from having bonded with his previous crew before their deaths, he tries not to bond with anyone from this crew (which includes the man who would go on to be Stalker), which causes them to grow skeptical of him at first. The squad however gets attacked, and Snake Eyes is harmed, leaving him unconscious, though Tommy comes to save him. When he comes back to America however, he finds out that his family had an accident on the way to pick him up with a drunk driver which caused their death.
Furstrated, he deals with this by taking up drinking for the next 6 months, until Tommy comes an offer him to come to Japan with him. Snake Eyes refuses and instead joins another man with a similar disposition that he had, to which they end up taking a crude vigilantism.
Eventually he finds that his partner is less benevolent than him and its implied that his partner's brother, was the drunk driver behind Snake Eyes' family's death. The two go in their separate paths and Snake Eyes ends up accepting Tommy's offer to join him in Japan. Together he is accepted as a Westerner in the Arashikage Clan, a mysterious clan of ninjas, which becomes his family. His presence isn't completely accepted by all of the clan at first, but after an assassination by some of the clan's own ninjas, he becomes fully accepted by them. At this point, distrust begins to grow between Tommy and Snake Eyes and eventually a second westerner joins the clan as a blacksmith. Eventually however, its revealed that he's actually Zartan, who was payed (by Snake Eyes former vigilante partner) to take Snake Eyes' life, even though he come to like the clan. The assassination attempt fails, killing one the clan's masters instead.
Zartan's master, knowing this, also commits senpaku because of the dishonor of having his pupil commit such an atrocity, while the rest of the clan believes that Tommy killed the master due to jealousy of them wanting to proclaim Snake Eyes as the next leader. Snake Eyes goes to a deserted area to live in a wooden cabin, until Stalker comes to recruit him for G.I. Joe. During this time he and Scarlett begin to take an interest in each other, and she comforts him on all the tragedies that he had been through in his life. Their relationship evolves to such an extent that during a mission, when two of the Helicopters were to collide and Scarlett got stuck, he came back for her. The Helicopter crashed on the ground, and Snake Eyes exited with his whole head engulfed in flames, while Scarlett was unconscious. He lost most of his face and the use of his voice during his accident, though he still had the stamina to continue the mission despite this, taking Scarlett's equipment to finish the job. He later recovers and even though he isn't at first very accepting of any comfort by other people, he ends up donning a version of the Snake Eyes costume.
Snake Eyes, although a fairly popular comic book character, got his start as a plastic toy, debuting in the second generation of G.I. Joe collectible action figurines by Hasbro. Originally conceived in military colors similar to the rest of the 1982 "Straight-Arm" G.I. Joe line, Snake Eyes was instead issued in all-black to save Hasbro on painting costs. In his comic book introduction, he was written by Larry Hama and and drawn by Herb Trimpe. Ever since his introduction, Snake-Eyes has been a very popular character in all forms of G.I. Joe media, including the toys, comics, cartoons, cartoon movies, and the live-action movies.
In keeping with his quiet personality, Snake-Eyes usually wears what could perhaps best be described as a black "military ninja" bodysuit, along with a balaclava and visor to cover his face, which was disfigured in a helicopter explosion. Since then, Snake-Eyes has had extensive plastic surgery to repair the damage to his face; he still has a few scars left, but his vocal cords cannot be repaired.
With G.I. Joe Again
The story in Devil's Due Publishing begins 7 years after Marvel's G.I. Joe stories (which is real time, as Devil's Due began publishing in 2001, 7 years after Marvel stopped publishing G.I. Joe in 1994). After 7 years, Snake Eyes and the rest of the G.I. Joe team are put back together due to Cobra having found Cobra Commander on U.S. Soil under suspicious activity. Snake Eyes is also seen to be at odds with Scarlett, his former lover and its later revealed that after three years of a relationship, it was decided they were going to get married. However, three weeks before the wedding, Snake Eyes ran away, back to the log cabin he had been found in previous to joining G.I. Joe for the first time. He's still seen having feeling for Scarlett, however, keeping a photograph of the two of them.
The two of them are part of the team that goes to attack a Cobra compound, and eventually both get overwhelmed by the enemy forces and are eventually captured. During their time captured in a cell, Scarlett confronts Snake Eyes about what he did and the latter seemingly tries to apologize, seemingly to no avail. He then takes C4 from a false palette in his mouth, and together with Scarlett's Det Cord, both of them make their escape, with the help of Spirit and Kamakura. They are later isolated in the G.I. Joe's headquarters, due to the fact that they're contaminated by the nanites that Cobra had been releasing, but before leaving he asks Spirit for a favor which no one else understood what it was. Subsequently, Scarlett tells Snake Eyes that she forgives him and that she still loves him, to which the latter complies by hugging her. Later its revealed that the box that he asked Spirit for was a Wedding Ring, to which he later purposes to Scarlett, after which the two go on to Scarlett's family house, where he's received with some antagonism.
Later when Storm Shadow infiltrates the base through a masterplan of Commander Cobra, Snake Eyes comes back from his leave to deal with him. The two of them fight and Storm Shadow comments that not only has he sene the light by coming back to Cobra, but that also Snake Eyes seems to have grown "soft". Storm Shadow manages to systematically fight of Snake Eyes even managing to cut his face (though not gravely), however eventually get overwhelmed and steals a uniform from a G.I. Joe trooper. However, Snake Eyes finds that this is simply a ruse and that Storm Shadow has ran away from the facility and given up on his original objective (which was to assassinate General Hawk). He is later seen going back to Scarlett's family, to which the brother's antagonism seems to have faded. No one knows who called Snake Eyes back to base, since he was meant to be in leave, but it is hinted at that it was Storm Shadow himself.
Going on Missions
He is later seen being asked by High Command to go with Scarlett and Spirit to investigate the kidnapping of a child genius. The child had been kidnapped and apparently there had been another attempted kidnapped on a child very similar to the one the team was investigating. When following up this lead, they find that the mother had been gagged and the child wasn't resisting the kidnapping, when the team arrives on the scene Snake Eyes tries to run after the escape vehicle and eventually reaches it, forcing the van to a halt. However, the kidnapper (a sixteen year-old) ends up fighting all of them off and running away into the woods. The team tries to follow them, but they don't manage to reach them.
During this time Flint and the Baroness are both kidnapped, so the GI Joes team up with the Baroness' lover, Destro, in an attempt to find out who kidnapped them, why and where they were being held at. Snake Eyes is on the small team that goes to a foreign eastern-European country, and joins forces with Destro to fight the Mafia. Flint and the Baroness resist torture and manage to escape, however go back into the compound in which they were held in when it comes to their attention that some of their teammates with the intention of rescuing them, ended up getting captured. Snake Eyes is seen then roughly going into the Mafia's base, eliminating most of the targets with extreme prejudice in an attempt to reunite himself with Scarlett, who was being held by the mafia.
Trying to Help Storm Shadow
After this mission it is revealed that Storm Shadow had been resisting the mind control that Commander Cobra had put him under (which was when he managed to inform Snake Eyes on his infiltration of the base). Snake Eyes has just finished sparring with Kamakura when Billy comes in and informs Snake Eyes of this. Together, the three men head to Storm Shadow's direction with Scarlett angry at the fact that Snake Eyes is putting their relationship in harm's way. The two end up reaching Storm Shadow's hideout too late, when after some resisting, Tommy is overwhelmed by the Cobra troops which hook him up to the mind control unit once again. As a result of this, Commander Cobra shoots his son, Billy and when Snake Eyes reacts, Storm Shadow is surprisingly there to defend his superior -- under the effects of the mind controlling apparatus again.
The two of them fight, while Storm Shadow tries to runaway with Commander Cobra. Storm Shadow is eventually overwhelmed by Snake Eyes and when the latter tries clear the former's mind using an Arashikage technique, he is interrupted by a thug who hits him in the back of the head before he can finish it. As Storm Shadow recovers, he appears to be recovered from the mind control, so Snake Eyes goes to see to Kamakura who is dealing with the Commander. Just as Snake Eyes is going to deal the finishing blow, Storm Shadow intervenes to stop it. After this, the two stare each other down and each of the two parties simply walks away.
Later Snake Eyes is seen escorting a group of children, similar to the one that he assisted being kidnapped, though no one on the team knows who they are. Eventually the two get attacked by a mysterious force who is eventually received to be Serpentor. The children are then also revealed to be Serpentor's clones, who were created when a suitable body for the latter was being attempted to be created. The team with which Snake Eyes is on is then captured and held on Cobra Island and eventually end up jailed with Cobra Commander. Together, the two partied manage to escape and attempt to make their way out, however when fighting the opposition Snake Eyes saves his friends by sealing a door in an attempt to stop a grenade. In the process however he gets gravely wounded. Eventually Cobra and the GI Joes defeat the Coil, the team that is led by Serpentor and win, though the GI Joes suffer many causalities.
After the War
After the war the team is reduced and Snake Eyes is put in the covert operations team, along with his usual crew of Jinx, Scarlett and Kamakura. Eventually the team goes on the mission to rescue T'Jbang who had infiltrated the Red Ninja Clan (unbeknownst to the rest of the Joes, much to Hawk and some other team members' chagrin) along with Alpine, Frostbite, Snow Job and Iceberg. The Red Ninja Clan was hosting Commander Cobra, who wanted to recruit some members to his cause, and make an alliance. Snake Eyes is also warned of the fact that Storm Shadow is within the list of opponents and that he has to put aside his personal feelings for the sake of the mission.
The Covert team goes to the Clan's hideout and walks into a trap (although they knew that the enemy was aware of their presence) and fight them off, with Snake Eyes ending up taking their leader. When Snake Eyes finishes the latter off in personal combat, he is handed over the Red Ninja Clan, which means that the clan requested Commander Cobra to leave. When reporting back to Hawk, the team reports a complete success as T'jbang was rescues and they managed to prevent Cobra Commander from recruiting any allies.
Powers and Abilities
Snakes does not possess any inherent super human abilities. He is, however, in top physical condition, capable of great feats of agility and reflexes, such as moving faster than the human eye can follow and attacking multiple opponents before they can react. And he has shown the ability to casually dodge bullets. Due to his extensive and various training over the years, Snake-Eyes is a master of multiple forms of martial arts and is a hand-to-hand instructor for the G.I. Joes. In corporation with his hand-to-hand skills, he is also a master of many forms of weaponry; such as his swords, shurikens, knives, various firearms, and explosives thanks to his ninja and military training. Snake-Eyes is also a master of stealth and covert missions.
Danger Girl/G.I. Joe
After the acquisition of the Danger Girl characters by IDW, it was decided to first launch the characters under the IDW banner with a crossover with one of the major properties at IDW, G.I. Joe, The series starts off with a dog chase involving Scarlett and Flint and they are soon shot down. It is revealed that they were providing escort for a shipment of rediscovered missiles with great destructive power. They are soon shot down though and the missiles are taken by Cobra, who also take the two prisoners. Once in Cobra custody they come across Abbey Chase who is acting undercover, though the two members of G.I. Joe do not know this. Elsewhere the American president arrives to the USS Flagg and informs the Joe team to stand down and to not seek to free their teammates. General Flag orders them to stand down. The remaining female members (Cover Girl, Lady Jaye, and Jinx) come up with a plan where they will contact the Danger Girl team (Cover Girl had previously met Johnny Barracuda). The team shows up and exposes the U.S. president as Zarana in disguise.
Soon enough it is revealed that the Danger Girl team already has an operative in place and she informs them of the plan. Firefly is to head to Moscow and detonate one of the missiles while Major Bludd is to go to Beijing to detonate another. Three teams head out, one to each of the two cities and the third to the Cobra base. By now Abbey is under suspicion of Baroness, Destro and Cobra Commander and is captured by Zartan when she attempts to free Scarlett and Flint. While they are trying to escape a team of Low Light, Snake Eyes and Stalker arrive to free them. Meanwhile in Beijing a team of Jinx, Johnny Barracuda and Sonya Savage stop Major Bludd while a team of Sydney Savage, Cover Girl and Roadblock stop Firefly. It is soon revealed that there is another missile which is headed for the homing beacon which Zarana has placed on the USS Flagg. Silicon Valerie, Duke and Lady Jaye quickly deal with it. Meanwhile at the Cobra base Storm Shadow has arrived to stop the Joes and he engages Snake-Eyes in combat. Eventually this group is also able to escape, while blowing up the base and they are all reunited on the USS Flagg.
G.I. Joe: ResoluteResolute
G.I. Joe: Resolute is a cartoon series written by comic book creator Warren Ellis. The show originally debuted on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, as an 11-part series, before being released on DVD in it’s entirety.
Warren Ellis was hired to write the series, even though he had no knowledge of the characters beforehand. The intention was to completely reboot the series, aiming for older audiences and fans. Hasbro was very supportive of the changes that Ellis proposed, even allowing characters to be altered. Snake-Eyes was one of the few that remained largely unchanged for the reboot.
G.I. Joe: RenegadesRenegades
On November 26, 2010, a new kid friendly animated series titled G.I Joe: Renegades debuted on the television channel The Hub. After a mission gone bad involved with Cobra industries, the G.I. Joes are labeled renegades, and must flee the forces of Cobra and the authorities. While on the run, the Joes must also prove their innocence and expose the evils of Cobra to the world. In the series, Snake-Eyes lost his voice due to a fight with Storm Shadow, and became disfigured after he suffered burns from the explosion of a Cobra research facility. Besides a few tweaks to his origin, he remains largely unchanged.
G.I. Joe: The Rise of CobraRise of Cobra
In the 2009 film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Snake-Eyes is an established member of the G. I. Joe team. It is revealed that when he was a young boy, Snake-Eyes was a street urchin who one day decided to steal some food. This led to a fight with a then young too Storm Shadow, but are interrupted from their fight by their master. The two then trained together, however Storm Shadow's anger showed in the training and as such the master never complimented him on his various wins over Snake Eyes however he complimented the latter on his first win over Storm Shadow. Eventually one day the master is found dead and Snake Eyes sees Storm Shadow running away.
It is unknown if, like the comics, this is a pure coincidence, as there is nothing to suggest that this is true. Snake-Eyes then takes a vow of silence as he sees his master dying. The two rivals then clash a variety of times, however neither gets the upper hand on the other. In their last battle the two fight in Destro's underwater base in the Artic cap. Snake-Eyes ends up stabbing Storm Shadow, who falls into the icy water to his most probably death, though there is no confirmation whether the ninja is actually dead or not.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation
Snake-Eyes returns in the 2013 sequel of G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra.
In the beginning, Snake-Eyes is away from the main squadron of the Joes on a separate mission. The Joes do become decommissioned, courtesy of a plot by Zartan disguised as the president. It is revealed that Storm Shadow is alive from their previous fight and during a rescue mission of Cobra Commander, Storm Shadow is injured by an explosion, which Snake-Eyes notices and monitors from the shadows. With this new knowledge, Snake-Eyes heads to a remote location where he trains with the Blind Master and Storm Shadow's cousin, Jinx.
He and Jinx are sent to a temple somewhere in the Himalayas to capture Storm Shadow and bring him back to the Blind Master and rest of the Arashikage clan alive. Snake-Eyes and his new partner successfully defeat and capture the fully recovered Storm Shadow and return him to the clan where Storm Shadow faces a trial. During the trial, with a declaration of innocence from Storm Shadow and a brief clash of swords with Snake-Eyes, it was revealed that the Hard Master was murdered and Storm Shadow was framed by Zartan. Snake-Eyes, Jinx, and Storm Shadow, regroup with the only remaining G.I. Joes of Roadblock, Lady Jaye, and Flint. They team together with General Joseph Colton to get supplies, weapons, and put a stop to Cobra Commander. The Joes successfully battle and halt Cobra Commander's plot, even though the commander manages to escape. After the fighting, Storm Shadow and Snake-Eyes stare down one final team before Storm Shadow heads off on his own and Snake-Eyes regroups with his team. With the president rescued and the world saved for now, the Joes each receive a medal of honor, along with the G.I. Joe forces being recommissioned.
