Spawn's making a comeback

I always liked Spawn.  Like practically everyone, I was a huge McFarlane fan.  I ate the stuff up.  Was it the most original character?  Maybe, maybe not.  It didn't matter.  Todd went on to create a universe of characters and along with his visuals, they all kicked ass.

Then Todd started getting busy building his empire.  I'm not complaining.  More power to him.  His action figure lines were phenomenal.  They really raised the standards in the toy industry.  Todd became quite the businessman.   As he grew busier, there was no way he could continue the art chores.  I stuck with it for a while.  He was still involved.

Eventually Todd left completely.  I stuck with it until issue #100.  It was still enjoyable but I was just reading too many comics and there was no Comic Vine to give me a reason (and be able to justify my spending habbits) to wife.  I started cutting some comics off my list and Spawn was one of the casualties.

After all this time, Todd's coming back.  I'll assume it's as writer or co-writer with Whilce Portacio on art.  Not bad.  Check out the artwork.  Looks pretty groovy to me.  I think I'll have to start picking up Spawn again.  I have picked up a couple lately.  The colorist, Geirrod Van Dyke, really caught my eye.

Here's the announcement.

Image founders take Spawn into an all-new direction!

This October, SPAWN returns to its roots as series creator Todd McFarlane and fellow Image Founder While Portacio take the reins in issue #185.

"While I'm very happy with where Spawn has gone, it's long past time to inject some new blood into the series while also returning to its roots," said McFarlane. "I feel what  Whilce and I are doing with our co-writer, Brian Holguin, combines the old and the new in a way no one would have expected. That's a claim which gets tossed around quite a bit in the industry, but this one really changes everything."

Details on the new direction will roll out over the coming weeks, especially during the team's appearance at Wizard World Chicago, June 28. The convention will feature both signings and a panel delving into the plans for what's to come.

SPAWN #185, a 32-page comic book for $2.95, will be available in stores October 2008. For more on their Wizard World Chicago appearance, please see www.wizarduniverse.com. Further information about the SPAWN comic, and all things McFarlane, can be found at www.spawn.com

Who's going to the San Diego Comicon?

Due to the huge crowd expected for next week's "Image Founders Panel" (moderated by George Khoury), Comicon International: San Diego will be moving it to room 6A. The panel will still be held at the same time (10:30-11:30am, Friday, July 27), just in a much larger room, which will now hold 1,000 people instead of 500. This will be the first time all seven Image partners have ever appeared together on one panel.

Below is the updated blurb from Comicon International: San Diego:

FRIDAY, JULY 27
10:30-11:30 Image Comics: The Founders—Erik Larsen, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri, and Jim Valentino reunite for Image's remarkable 15th anniversary. Join the conversation as they explore Image Comics' beginnings, impact, and future in the comics industry. Moderated by George Khoury (author of Image Comics: The Road to Independence from TwoMorrows Publishing). Room 6A

In 1992, seven artists shook the foundation of the comic book industry when they left their top-selling Marvel Comic titles to jointly form a new company named Image Comics. With no certainty of success, they formed a home that would allow themselves and other artists the opportunity to tell their stories without any censorship or editorial restraints. Even more importantly, Image would finally give creators full ownership of their properties. In an industry that began with artists working in sweatshop-like conditions, Image remains a living beacon for any creator that dares to dream.

Image Comics is a comics and graphic novels publisher formed in
1992 by a collective of best-selling artists. Since that time,
Image has gone on to become one of the largest comics publishers in
the United States. There are currently four partners in Image
Comics (Erik Larsen, Todd McFarlane, Marc Silvestri and Jim
Valentino), and Image is currently divided into four major houses
(Todd McFarlane Productions, Top Cow Productions, Shadowline and
Image Central). Image comics and graphic novels cover nearly every
genre, sub-genre and style imaginable, offering science fiction,
romance, horror, crime fiction, historical fiction, humor and more
by the finest artists and writers working in the medium today.
