Cap in the Civil War
I always enjoy the What If? series. This is no exception. They are an entertaining read most of the time and something you can just take for face value. The only knock I have with this one, I was left wanting more. It seemed really short to me. It took a long time to set the story up, then it was over in a flash. Over in about 5-6 pages. That was a bummer. It took the whole issue to tell me how he became who he is... then boom, it was over. I would like to see a follow up to this one. Although there doesn't appear to be one.
I liked the twist to this story... how could Captain America be in the Civil War? How could he be a super soldier before they had the science to create our version of the serum? I liked what I saw as a play off of Josey Wales a little bit. The Redlegs (led by none other than Bucky Barnes) are wreaking havoc upon Missouri, killing everyone in their path, but lo and behold, the one person not wanting to get in on this attrotious action is the newbie, Stephen Rogers.
I think it also does a good job of casting a good light on the Native America people. As you can tell by the cover, there is a Native American connection in the issue. Also cool how he's got a Bald Eagle watching out for him. Interesting. Considering how the Cap of our reality has a Falcon with him, I would have guessed it would have been a Falcon, not an Eagle, protecting him.
I enjoyed it, if you can find a copy cheap out there (like I did) it's worth picking up.
