11/24/10Guy Gardner: The Way of the Warrior(Blog) (Forum)Way of the Warrior(Back) (Next)

We all have trade paperback (TPB) collections we'd like to see. Here's one of mine:

Proposed Title:Guy Gardner: The Way of the Warrior.
    Alternate Title:
    1. JLA: The Way of the Warrior
    2. Justice League: The Way of the Warrior
    Collecting 7 Issues:
    • Guy Gardner: Warrior #32-34
    • Hawkman (1993) #22-23
    • Justice League America (1989) #101-102
    Covers: (click to enlarge)
TPB Cover: Guy Gardner: Warrior #34
TPB Cover: Guy Gardner: Warrior #34

Ugh, the Nineties: over rendered bodies, cybernetics and armor everywhere you looked, blast-first-ask-no-questions tough guys, and with the coming of Zero Hour in 1994, the worst thing to ever happen to Guy Gardner - the change to being the Vuldarian powered Warrior. Personally, I thought Guy getting the yellow power ring was one of the coolest things DC Comics ever did (of course, I still wish they had given it to Kyle). Why they did away with that, in favor of this lackluster Warrior design, is beyond me. I want to barf a little, every time I think about it (I don't, but I want to).

Yet, I ran across this storyline, and it intrigues me. A crossover story arc, involving Guy Gardner: Warrior, Hawkman, and Justice League America, that obviously must have been done to get "the new Guy" out there, but probably also to help pump up these three series, all of which ended less than a year after this arc. It's got me curious, because it must've been reaching for the feel of an epic, judging from all the heroes in these issues. Just on the covers, you see Guy, Hawkman, Wonder Woman, Fire, Ice, Lobo, Obsidian, Flash, Martian Manhunter, Captain Atom and Nuklon. There are even more characters inside the books though! That is a story I want to read.

I went with the Guy Gardner title, because he is obviously the focus of the story arc (in the arc title, "Warrior" is presented as his name logo). However, I really think this would sell better as a JLA or Justice League TPB. If I was picking one of the issue covers for the TPB cover, I'd use Guy Gardner: Warrior #34.

Would you buy it? Let me know in the comments, and thanks for reading.

@LightBright: I really liked him with the yellow power ring.  The sheer audacity of it matched his characterization so well.  Guy Gardner was a FUN book when he had that ring.  The rest of it...I still need to read at some point. ;)

@cbishop: He got infected by a red ring recently. That's been pretty entertaining to read.

Emerald Warriors is one of my favourite titles at the moment.

@LightBright: I haven't had a lot of fun money this past year, so I haven't been able to check that one out.  Guy would be a scary Red Lantern, I would think.  I like the idea of the Reds (well, as much as I like any of the other lantern colors), but that coughing up blood thing they seem to do is kind of nasty looking.
