I've just finished reading it for the first time and while it's quite a masterpiece of work...I think that it may be getting too much credit

As interesting as the characters were (some of them) and the main story being quite good I think that naming it the best graphic novel of all time is a little bit too much, don't get me wrong, it's near there but I can think of a few stories that I like more, maybe it's just that I have different tastes but wanted to hear other opinions

I understand where you’re coming from Nighthunter, it's really a matter of taste. Watchmen is often considered the Citizen Kane of all comic books. The analogy is that Citizen Kain is widely referred to the 'perfect movie' , the master peace of all film, the greatest movie of all time, exedra, exedra; and in the comic book world Watchmen is that. I am just a geek at movies as I am at comics and believe that Citizen Kane was very over rated. But on the subject if Watchmen. No. In the thousands of comics that I have indulged in, Watchmen is the best, and I am a hard person to impress. But it is not necessarily my favorite. ( that one is reserved for 'The Killing Joke' ) Of course Watchmen is a close second. It doesn’t exactly come down to what you like the most, but what you can categorize as pure English literature. Example: Mighty Avengers would be like a mainstream teen novel, Harry Potter comes to mind, (please forgive me). Watchmen would be Shakespeare. Overrated? Maybe. But it is also the most read collection of writing in schools and colleges in the world, and highly regarded as greatest collection of English literature and is analyzed as thoroughly as the Bible.  Do you see Harry Potter having his own study class in Princeton University? Well, I wouldn’t know, but I think you get my point.  ; ]

I did love Watchmen, what I'm saying is that calling it the best graphic novel of all time is a little bit too much in my opinion, it's near there though

I know there was a grade 10 class after my time that got to do one of the Potter books for something. (Jerks also got to do V For Vendetta, while all I got was The Wars...)

Yes and no.  Those who think it's great in the highest sense of the word are correct, but it's not the absolute perfection of the medium that a lot of people hold it as, and definitely not as transcendent a piece of work as Sandman.  There's nothing else I'm looking forward to more, though, fot what that's worth.

I've never read any 12-issue series that introduces a world and characters with such depth and a story as complex and believable as is contained in Watchmen. To me, this is what makes Watchmen and V for Vendetta so great. The political commentary on both current events and on the morality of vigilantes is unparalleled, in my opinion. It is a self-contained story with an unbelievable cast of original characters with their own histories and very distinct personalities. Many of the heroes are tragic figures, and the way the components of the plot come together is art, plain and simple. I genuinely think Watchmen is indeed the best graphic novel ever.

Well, personally I think Gaiman's Sandman outstrips the Watchmen on every creative level.

I understand what the Watchmen is, and what Moore was trying to do/say, I understand it's value as not only a piece of comic book history but as a piece of literature...but I don't think it is the best of all time. I don't think it is overrated, I just don't think it is *the* best.

Mmmmh, I think one of the point that count for Watchmen is the fact that you can find the influence of this comics in many, many comics book, including Neil Gaiman works. ow, it can seems outdated, or not as good than some of the comics books publised today, but I think it's because Watchmen has open the way for the other.

Only in the sense that it may have opened the door for Sandman to be made. Beyond that, and being comic books, the two series have nothing, and I mean nothing, in common. They are operating in two completely different arenas of storytelling.

Yeah, I agree with you, but I wasn't talking about the storytelling, I was more talking about the inhuman feeling and the alienation to be a superhero, or a superpowered individual. Mr.Manhattan and the Sandman seem to me very alike sometime, even Death ! It's influence nonethless. In the other comics, I think it's what I called the "Superangst". The true meaning of having power and use it in a world to solve real problem. Just watch the Autority, for example, or Kingdome Come.

Excellent post.  It's more a matter of technical proficiency than taste.  Shakespeare is considered better than Rowlings (if that is her name), because of the skill in handling the material, the setup, the conflicts created, the characterization, all of the technical aspects of writing.  While someone may enjoy Rowlings more it would be virtually impossible to say that her writing is better than Shakespeare's.  The same can be said for the Watchmen.  While it can be argued that there are more enjoyable stories, there are very few that could be said to be written as well as or better then, The Watchmen.
