Back in Rome, Vittorio is celebrated as a hero. He has no intention to see Matilde again, admitted to a psychiatric asylum. She no longer trusts the return of her lover, believing him dead. She seem to have accepted the death and his health seems to have benefited. Ugo can't decide what to do: to tell her that Vittorio is back in Rome or to leave her unaware?
