Cap should know more languages. Except from all the reasons told in the video, he has traveled all around the world, he should have picked something.

I would expect cap to know at least german lol

G-Man. Bendis doesnt just write Tony Stark imature, he write everything imture. It really annoyed me in Siege when Osborn takes out Thor and Moonstone says 'Woof.' and towards the end, Stark also says 'Woof.' Its like children making animal farm noises. Just sounds really juvenile.
And as Steve Rogers, you at least know how to speak french and german, considering he fought in those countries back in WWII. Even wolverine can speak in those languages flowrantly. including russian and japanesse.

Posted by CaptainGenisVell

shouldn't he have known German at least? he was in World War II after all.

I hate that Stark is different as well. The writers should be following the Invincible title since it solely follows him, and sets what is happening to him for the foreseeable future. Marvel need to have writers meetings for Avengers titles with every other writer for the characters featured.

I'm not sure, I don't remember Cap speaking many other languages. According to another issue that came out last Wednesday, Secret Warriors, Cap apparently didn't know German during the war. Some of the Howling Commandos were talking about how there was this German officer who had them surrounded was yelling at Cap in German and Cap didn't know what he was saying.

I think the "little Italian" bit was a nod/joke from Inglourious Basterds.

Why is it that Bendis can't portray Tony in his the new persona that Faction has given him in Invincible Iron Man? Is it really that difficult? Sadly Fraction is just as guilty as Bendis with his portrayal of Tony in Uncanny X-Men 526. Hopefully Faction will get it right next time.

Posted by Alphaproto

I remeber when people liked Bendis. I still think he's a good writer he's just writing to much. He should just write 1 or 2 books.
Posted by Trodorne

my problem with this is why could they not plan to do this issue during or right after siege series.instead of how many months after the event.

In Secret Warriors 18 which came out this week Steve Rogers doesn't speak German.

Posted by G-Man

With Secret Warriors, sure he didn't speak German at that time. Maybe he picked some up afterwards.

Good review. I didnt pick this up but im thinking i should have.

Actually, I've got to say: I'm surprised that Rogers even speaks Italian.  In the WWII era, and probably up through at least the 70's, unless you were an immigrant, Americans weren't all that concerned with learning foreign languages.  It wasn't really until the 80's that we started to realize how many Spanish-speaking people there are here, and started thinking, "Maybe it would be good to know some of that language, in case it eclipses English."  Before that, we pretty much had the attitude that being "the dominant country on the planet," other countries can learn English.

Rogers didn't exactly prepare to be a world travelling soldier.  He was 4F at first.  He took the formula, and bam, he's off to war.  I'd imagine whatever Italian he spoke was from Italian immigrant families in his area - the main race of immigrants portrayed in New York for many years.

The "midgard" thing bothers me a little bit, because in the 40's, the dominant reading for a soldier aged kid would have been the classics, including classical mythology.  Even without knowing Thor, he should have known enough mythology to know that "midgard" is "earth."

...Okay, I've probably thought about this way too much.

@iLLituracy:

I'm not exactually saying Cap does speak any other languages, I'm just saying, he should. But I wouldnt know about that issue in Secret Warriors, as i havent read it yet. might do someday tho.

Ya he learned German while he was frozen in a block of ice!

Also the writing is 100% shitty Bendis, he doesn't care about how other writers write these characters. If he wants to write Cap as an idiot or Tony as a child he will. Bendis has constantly shown he has no regard for other writers and the work they do to make these characters better. You got Cap and Tony in this and Avengers, you have the example of Moonstone in Dark Avengers. Every character he writes reads exactly the same way. He may have good story ideas, but he definitely can't implement them well. Whenever I read anything Bendis writes it almost seems like he's trying to turn the comic into a novel with all the dialogue that is explaining what the characters are doing.. I mean isn't that what the artists are for?

I'm surprised you gave it that high of a score with the character issues you pointed out...but oh well.

@jakob187: I liked the characters and love the art. I can't get enough Alan Davis. Besides those few points, there was some cool stuff happening.

Hey Tony, have you been reading the regular Thor issues recently? Doesn't this plot collides with what is happening there? Man. This is messy.
Posted by hellfiregod529

Classic Bendis. Taking how other writers do things then totally ignoring what they do. Cap has spoken German, Russian and French in his own book. This is just how Bendis does things. Not quite as infuriating as him portraying Bucky as a dumb jock instead of a world class super spy type character.

Posted by Andferne

This says he is fluent i Russian and German, and possibly others.
Posted by turoksonofstone

I believe Cap should speak GERMAN as well. Hmm...Bendis is past his prime. Alan Davis is one of the best. Neat coverage.

Posted by Bald Eagle

I think it's funny how Iron Man and Steve Rogers come across some monsters and ask if they know Thor not thinking anything bad will happen.  Its almost like they just met Thor a couple days ago and know next to nothing about him.
Posted by -Eclipse-

I remember an issue of Captain America where I'm pretty sure Cap is speaking fluent Russian. One of the early issues of the current run, with the whole Winter Soldier thing. Cap has a flashback about the village of Kronas and he's speaking to Karpov/Karpov's men in fluent Russian. I'm also confident he'd know a little french from the time he spent there. When the heck would Steve pick up some Italian?

Posted by Decept-O

@G-Man:  I love the fact you have such a deep appreciation for a lot of comic and fantasy artists, and it isn't just because you like a number of the same ones I do, such as Alan Davis and Mike Allred, but you have such passion about it.  Just to add,  Alan Davis has such a clear, crisp and dynamic way of drawing that is hard to duplicate let alone beat.

You are NOT nitpicking by pointing out these flaws in the story.  I wholeheartedly agree that Cap would definitely speak several languages, and not just pigeonhole, but fluently.  Definitely Spanish, German, and probably French, and Russian as Andferne points out ( nice job).  These would be the Earth bound languages he would speak besides English.   I would even venture so far as to say he'd pick up some Nordic or Asgardian verbiage at the very least!!

Cap is the leader of The Avengers.  In addition to being the ultimate prime physical example of human perfection in athleticism, skills, combat, and techniques, he should be very proficient in other areas, like spoken languages, body language, maybe even some sign language for that matter.  A soldier DOES use some sign language during combat and manuevers,  so he'd pick up at least a little in this area.

Lastly, he is a walking dossier on super powered beings, friend and foe.  You have mentioned it time and time again and I totally agree with you.  Why he's continually been written as being "forgetful", along with Bucky, for that matter, just doesn't add up and is a sign the writers are NOT paying enough attention.  It isn't nitpicking, it is something we as fans know about these characters, the blasted writers should as well!  I understand making things dramatic, but it is a sign of laziness when they can't accurately portray the characters.

Sorry for the long rant, but I just can't agree with you more about this topic!

I <3 Alan Davis Too.

im honestly suprised that both iron man and cap were both stupid enough to admit they were friends of thor. i mean isnt it Thor 101 that if its green and barbaric odds are it hates thor

Didn't like it, gonna drop this book to save money. Same with "Iron Man: :Legacy"... and mabye New Avengers and current Avengers if the current tone continues. =/

I think people who live in California over estimate the level of Spanish in the rest of the country.

I believe this comic is supposed to be happening directly after Siege and Tony hadn't created his new armor yet. And yep that's how Bendis likes to write him, so that's how Bendis does his thing.

Yeah... whose idea was it to bag the background comics?
Posted by Chris2KLee

Huh, the language thing caught me too. I figured Steve would at least know all the languages from the allied forces of WW2 and probably some others. I could have sworn there have been comics where Steve has spoken other languages fluidly while undercover or something.

Bendis is a hack
he does what HE wants to do, damning all others who came before him
what a jerk

I really don't like Cap's portrayal in this issue. Aside from the things G-Man brought up, I just can't imagine a wholesome, virtuous guy like Steve making out with some random woman when he and Sharon Carter are in a serious relationship. Maybe it sounds nit-picky, but it just seems to go against Steve's very characterization of a noble man. I just can't imagine the original Captain America engaging in infidelity, even if it was a "heat-of-the-moment" kind of thing.

@mouradb101: I forget the exact explanation but she had pheromones or some such and Steve could barely resist.

Flowrantly???? japanesse??? When you see a red line under your words you may want to re-examine what you have written. This may seem difficult for you but despite the fact that Cap fought in World War 2 does not mean he can speak the languages. My grandfather, and other veterans I knew were never able to speak either language and they fought bravely in the war. So please before opening your mouth, please attempt to at least try to have some common sense as to what you are talking about as not every soldier was a British or Allied Intelligence officer.

ditto. been stationed in okinawa for four years and i can throw out the important phrases, but i am by no means proficient or fluent.

Tony Stark saying "I'll buy you a pony."  Never bothered me.  Its like him saying come work for me Noh-Var, no?  I'll be your best friend.  He knows he wont convince him, so its a little joke to maybe save face or to joke around.
No real big deal.
But I sort of get the complaint about Stark and the big giants.
But I just buy that comic for the art.

Haven't read the book but the art does look good, the story sounds kind of stupid though.  So hopefully it's better than it appears.

First of all, I was not talking about real soldiers, I was talking a fictional char-act-er. Okay, fine. Maybe Cap didnt know a single word of French or German in the second world war, but having enchanced abilities and powers, maybe he picked up at least some of these languages apart from italian years later right to the present day. Probably.

And dont give me that shit about your grandfather not able to speak a foreign language and fought bravely in the war. Becasue both of my grandfathers fought with the British army and even they fought bravely. One of my grandfathers fought in Burma and he managed to speak both Burmese and Kachin (one of the Burmese tribes' languages) and he also knew moose code.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but I do at least have some common sense and I do know what I am talking about.
