I actually loved this issue, i loved the history section, and I can foresee the other avatars of the different corps coming up in the future, as I was wondering why we only saw Paralax, Ion, and a little of Predator up until now. Sure nothing major happened plot wise, but some cool scenes took place, but I don't want to spoil what they were.

i just like the fact that they revealed all the emotional embodiments.

I liked the origins of the entities but other than that I've got to agree with Babs...not a lot happened....the thing that's bothered me so far is that they make these enemies out to be super powerful and difficult to beat and they struggle against them for a while and then all of a sudden they do something that they could have done from the beginning to defeat them....like how they defeated Xanshi in this issue....it should have been a huge battle between Xanshi and Mogo....I guess it seems like they drew things out to long and they realized that the series is almost over so they've got to tie everything up really quick

i give it a 5.5 its cool

I also loved this issue, yes, I see your stand point, as a "blackest night" issue you both are right its not a very good one, but Geoff also has to set up the next arch for the Green Lantern, Just like he did with "war of light" and "blackest night" at the end of Sinestro Corp War, Anyone who loves Sinestro will love this issue, also with that being said, Geoff Johns is bringing the entities up because as we all know Paralax was pulled out of battle, I'm sure it will have somthing to do with all of the Color entities, we know that the Preadator escaped and fled, we know that Ion is m.i.a., Paralax has disappered. Geoff Johns stated in an intervew that the orange entity lives in Larfleeze's power battery. what about the rest?? lets be honest when we found out that each color had an entity, we wanted to know what the all looked liked and how they all came to be.

The only good part was the history of the universe after nothing much happened.

I was thinking the exact same thing... if they had just did what they did at the end in the first place, the whole battle could've already just ended on page 4.

Why bother, when the White Lantern is just gonna kick both their butts later.
Also... why make the White Lantern so freakin' powerful!!?

Sinestro killing off Black Lanterns like they were just scrambled egss!?  I mean he's like the Dragon Ball version of "Super Saiyan 15" while everyone is still figuring out how the heck someone's hair could turn blonde!

It kind'a cheapens those past hard fought battles among the Black Lanterns in the earlier issues.

The issue gave some Entity backstory. It's meant to flesh out some of the story. There's not going to be room to explore the Entity's backstory in issue 8...and then some people would've complained about that.

People above me are spot on. The embodiments are definitely seeds for the next arc. It's nice to see Geoff looking out for the future and letting people know his grand Green Lantern story doesn't end with Blackest Night.

There was some plot development. We got some things out of the way. We moved some chess pieces to set up the final battle. It was a good issue with beautiful art. GL served its purpose: a good tie-in that adds some more layers to the Blackest Night series but it isn't essential.

Posted by jlat89

I was a fan of the issue but like you guys said it wasn't essential to Blackest Night
I loved the art though

Posted by burr787

I liked this issue and although it was filler, it was good filler. We got the entities out of the way and although Xanshi was taken out quick, who really cares, BL Xanshi was a dumb idea. That and there's no way that Mogo could have fought it, Mogo took 7 issues to make it to Oa, it probably would have taken him 20 issues to get to Earth. Would have been nice if the fight was more drawn out though.

Edited by Cassio411

I think there is a short attention span regarding Blackest Night. Imagine if Crisis on Infinite Earths was being reviewed?

Green Lantern #52 did feel like a filler though... and the colors are fine in my opinion, it is expected from a green lantern title.

Posted by Joey Ravn

I liked it. As burr787, it was a filler, but a good filler. The issue ended as it started, except the thing with Xanshi. The thing is, what happens in-between the beginning and the end is really cool. All the story about the origin of the emotions is really cool. And the last page is GREAT. I can hardly wait for next week ;) I'd give this issue a 4/5: nice issue, could have been done without it, but good nevertheless.

PS: G-Man, what a cool t-shirt :P

Posted by sora_thekey

LOL at Babs' Aladdin reference... (again)

For all of Blackest Night, I did not pick up a single tie-in... I was leaning toward getting the Wonder Woman mini and THIS issue in particular....  now I'm not...

See! This is why I love the Unscripted CV Reviews! It tells me what to buy and what not to buy!

From what we can tell the white lantern is only effective against black lanterns, so far.  Who know what the other emotions can do to pure life essence.  Actually it makes sense that the other emotions will conflict with the white lanterns as well, when you think about it--especially with Sinestro in control of it.   How often has anger or greed or love gotten in the way of life's flow?  I'm getting all philosophical, but over all I dig the colors and the history lesson only strengthen the identity of the Entity.  I give it a 4.0.

Posted by MichaeltheFly

Still haven't read the issue yet, so I decided to watch this review, I am not as excited as I used to be before I saw the review but I will still read the issue.

Posted by RATZGobbler

NOTHING HAPPENED!!! Did you guys just not read the whole thing?

I'm sorry for seeming so harsh but COME ON, you want Blackest Night to end G-man? Let somebody else review it then.
Posted by Theansweris42

Sweet Aladdin  reference.

@RATZGobbler: Ask yourself, if something happens but nothing changes, did it need to happen?

Posted by jakob187

This should've been some sort of a one-shot in order to tell the backstory stuff instead of being a GL issue IMO.  Regardless, I don't understand the complaints about the amount of color.  I thought it was beautiful stuff.

Other than that, yeah...it's filler that they didn't want to push into BN #8.

Posted by Gregomasta

I couldn't agree more with the both of you.  Good review.

Posted by lostlantern13
@jakob187:
Why it wasn't a one-shot and in GL? Because it is important to Geoff's GL saga. Chasing the embodiments down will be why the New Guardians have to be teamed up (why is the only question left). That's what I'm seeing in these reviews.

The long-term GL fans recognize it wasn't dire to Blackest Night, but don't mind that because it's relevant to the bigger story. The readers wanting pure BN are a bit bummed because there's no immediate pay off.

That's not to say that the BN event could've been condensed and tightened into 6 months as opposed to 9, but that's just how I'm perceiving people's opinions of this issue.
Posted by emerald_lamp_2814

what do you guys have against color it is green lantern do you want it in black and white, the point of the comic is to look like a comic and the story is setting up for some thing bigger it is pretty essential if you are going to follow green lantern after blackest night.

Posted by Moomin123

I think this issue was good. I'm really into the Blackest Night storyline and I really wanna see what happens to Sinestro. I don't think he will die though. I know Nekron stabs him but Geoff Johns wouldn't dare kill off Hal Jordan's arch-enemy.
Posted by Freddy.Mercurial

ya, i gotta admit, your collective biases are kinda puttin' a damper on the BLACKEST NIGHTS reviews...

1)  what with the anti-colors campaign???  i thought all these colors are radiant & really make the comics pop...  sometimes they can be used incorrectly, but from what i've seen here, they look awesome!  i dont know, maybe it's the graffer in me tho...  really lovin' the colors tho...
 2)  how come u guys always want kool events to end so quickly...  SO impatient...  maybe its because u have too many comics to read???  if thats the case, maybe u need to quit your dayjobs...  hahaha!

Okay, one question when it comes the new edition of the GL and flash rings

Posted by MorlockMartyr

2.5?!! Oh Babs, you're so hard to please... I guess you're not a huge fan.

Nothing happened? Except for John Stewart and his cadre taking out a big foe and SAVING THE WHOLE WESTERN SEABOARD! Ahem! (BTW John totally deserves more page time like this.) Also there was all the history, and the avatar reveals, which won't mean much if you're not into the GL mythos, but I digress.

Let's remember that Geoff Johns said like a year ago that the BN story would be self-contained in its 8 issues, and all the GL, GLC, and tie-ins would be background material, not crucial to the main story. If all one cares about is BN, you can skip this. GL fans oughta get it.

And oooh the pretty colors (4 inkers, 3 colorists). Woweee!

Posted by CATMANEXE

wasnt my favorite issue. looked real sharp, but agreed not alot happened, other than a ton
of posturing. not a fail in any regards either as it still was well written, but an obvious filler/until next time
issue, since they really cant have the big finale showdown happen until the very last issue.
ill say this though, thats a hell of a recton there. the entire creation of all life in the universe went that way?
theyd better make sure every DC employee gets a copy of that, so there wont be any continuity mistakes later, lol.

Posted by FoxxFireArt

Having Sinestro be the White Lantern feels a lot better then the over obvious idea of it being Hal Jordan. The idea he became the White lantern also gives credence to G-Man's suggestion that Brightest Day might not be all "rainbows and sunshine".

Yes, Yes, Babs. We all know by now you got new glasses.

Well, it is appropriate given the situation and the similar mustaches. It would be hard not to see a comparison.

I LOVED this issue it was super good 5/5 for me. I loved the history of the entities and the avarice one is awesome! Just an all around great issue. The colors and art were awesome. Sure some could call it filler, but it was worth the read and the price. Also people say that nothing happened, but didn't Sinestro die and get reborn?

Posted by RedRyan

Nothing much happened in this issue, the origin of life in the universe is revealed,a city is saved, an entire planet is destroyed, not to mention what is happening with Sinestro.Doug Mahnke turns in some of the most amazing art of his lfe and it merits a 2.5.'Too many colours'.That's telling him!

I was thinking about getting this, but this review lies second thoughts unto me.

This issue was great.  I am happy I picked this issue up and did no listen to this review.  Nothing happened?  Really?  We got to know about all the entities of the different lantern corps and their avatars, we also go to learn that Sinestro can be a  sympathetic person, we also got a peak a John Stewart's past.   Also the different colors were fine and at least this book has colors, 95 % of other books on the market are either Gorey, or so dark you can't even tell whats going on.    I give this book a 10 out of 10,  I give this review a 0 out of 10 not even worth looking at, I wished I never did look at it, almost cost me a great read.

Posted by glforthewin

they could have had the whole entity story be something like tales of the sinestro corps

Edited by Nova`Prime`

I just got a chance to read issue 51 and 52 last night and I have to admit, I liked both but over all it seems like Blackest Night isn't really leading to anything special. Sure Sinestro is a white lantern, but other then that the status quo seems to be the same as when the arc started. Me and a buddy were wondering about these "big" events and notice that not once has anyone mentioned anything about Final Crisis. Granted I haven't been following much of anything outside of GL or GLC, but other then no Bruce Wayne nothing's changed.

Marvel is in the same boat, but at least when Dark Reign is over the good guys will be back on top, I just don't get what's up with the big events they don't really have any impact outside of the event itself. And it just looks like that's what's going to be happening after Blackest Night, nothing.

Posted by Mbecks14

it was really cool to finally see all the entities. but otherwise i do agree, it was just a filler, because we got to the same point we were at the beginning by the end

His skin is often shown as purple or a red tint. Purple is just red with some blue in it. Just look at their mostaches.
 Sinestro & Jafar
They also both have Yellow Eyes. Both are power obsessed. Both had protagonist who ended up stumbling on a fantastic power. Let's just be thankful that there were no refrigerators in Agrabah for Princess Jasmine's sake.

This issue was so tight, glad Sinestro got the powers too...Hal getting power ups is kinda played out

I really think that may have something to do with the harsh rating I gave the issue. This story arc just seems to lag; it's taking forever. It feels repetitive and redundant, and I'm tired of what feels like the same scenes running over and over again-- so when John Stewart "saves a planet" it's so much less shocking because it's been done before. Okay, you saved another planet. Alright, awesome-- because I haven't seen that before or anything, right?

It's nothing personal. The writing was good, the art was great--but if a comic doesn't hold my interest then what is the point?

seemingly he won't be a white lantern so long.

I have to disagree to a certain extent. A story should hold your interest, but at times a reader also needs to be patient. Comic books, while entertaining, can't really be held to the same standard as a regular book. If it's a filler just to be a filler that would be one thing, but if it's filler to try and explain something to the reader. That's a whole other matter. In a monthly release this may feel off putting, but added as part of a collection into say a trade paperback. It could fit quite well.

Comic writers I think are at times put into a much harder position then your average novel author. Your basic novel writer does have many limitations to deal with, but as a reader we get what is normally the whole of the vision with that book, providing it's not a book series. A comic writer is often dictated to as to when these events will be and last till. Narrative and exposition is such a hard balancing act under those kinds of constraints. More so when readers seem to demand more action. You have to leave room for the art was well as the words.

As a frequent Japanese manga reader. There are often arcs in these stories that could last over a year's time. It can be exasperating at times, but what I think helps is how frequently they are released. I have the next chapter of the manga every week. Rather then the monthly waits between comics. (Though some mangas are monthly releases.) That considered. I can imagine it could be quite frustrating as a comic reader to be greatly looking forward to the next month's issue. Only to discover it doesn't move the narrative further or not have the action one was expecting.

I just feel that pacing in comics is a seriously dangerous high wire act. Hard to find a happy medium without getting into the same pattern over and over.

All this being said. It is over the line to question a person's fandom for a series just because they are harsh toward it. Being a fan doesn't mean you have to fawn over every action and issue a series does.

@ARTIMUS WALKSTRANGE:
Why "Predator?"
I think this can best be answered by cheesy song titles from the 80's: "Love Bites," "Love is a Battlefield," "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," "Love Will Tear Us Apart."

For someone who has never read a green lantern let alone know anything about the character like myself,
is it worth reading blackest night?

Posted by ArtisticNeedham

I think it was sort of a filler issue but it did emphasize the point that Sinistro is now connected to every living thing in the universe, and the fact that he wiped out most of the Black Lantern Zombies.  So there were a few important things that happened but nothing too important.  Nothing really major.  Maybe they were trying to emphasize the power the White Lanterns have.  Set them up because no one knows anything about them yet.  Can't just suddenly have the White Lantern appear and assume that everyone knows who and what he is and how powerful.
