LOL, true.

Crap, this is exactly how I feel about the game. Like the roster involved but you can't play as any of them.

Posted by OmegaDynasty

15 dollars a month, for what seems like COH rip off. If only the game was as good as the trailer. *sigh*

Posted by TheMess1428

The trailer actually has a lot to do with the actual game. Lex Luthor assembles a bunch of villains to take over the world. The heroes go on defense and try to beat them. Superman returns just in time to see Wonder Woman die by Lex's hand. Joker kills Batman. Lex kills Superman. Brainiac shows up to destroy the world. Lex goes back in time to warn the JLA that this is their future unless they prepare to prevent it. So they start getting a bunch of brand new heroes so that they have strength in numbers and they won't fail to defeat the villains and Brainiac's strike. That is why you're a new hero.

NOOOOOOOOOO IT IS TRUE!

Babs welcome to my world, I mean lately all the comic book  related games (with the exception of Batman Arkham Asylum) are the same, they bring a little violence, they add some known comic book character names and they mix it with a few flashy scenes and they want you to buy it, I don't think they care if you enjoy playing it or not, they just want our money. All I can say is you are probably right when you are saying this is just another MMO, which I don't have a problem with but I guess that what it is just another MMO.

Posted by Manchine

I would never want to play anything other then my own characters.  I am hoping to have the MMO be a combo between City of X and Champions.  Champions online looks and has FAR more characterization while city of X has better gameplay.

In the MMORPG's pushing back is a great thing because having a game come out to early means the death of the game.... see age of conan.  It was hyped enough to have almost 1 million people playing it.  If it was ready like it is now 2 years plus later it would of been a good game.  Now it has less then 100k worth of subs.

Nothing wrong with a delay, it could be worse, they could release it with a ton of bugs and it just being plan bad

Posted by sora_thekey

I don't want to say much about the expectations I have for the game because I can be proven wrong/right when it comes out, but the delays, although really disappointing, do mean that DC is trying to make this the best possible.

I still think that in the format that the preview video was done in would serve well to make a really good Justice League movie... and it could prove more useful than Live-Action when you have such a problem to cast certain characters like Wonder Woman who you can never find the right physique for.

Go back to the 2:30 mark... Does anybody else think that Hal Jordan looks a lot like Karl Urban in that scene?

I dunno Babs. On the one hand, A lot about this game does look like a really typical MMO. On the other hand, the hero you play gets to team up with Batman and Wonder Woman and interact with them. So that's something City of Heroes can't offer. I think the game at least deserves a trial run when they finally do release it. Plus you can play it with a controller and not a keyboard. How cool is that?
Posted by elayem98

Babs u said u wanted to play batman or wonder woman or catwoman, but if DCUO did that there would be like 1000 batmen running around in gotham city. thats no fun.

Posted by jakob187

I think they just need to kill the project.  There's no need for the game, especially when City of Heroes continues to rage on.  They are merely oversaturating the market with yet another MMO that won't be able to compete properly in the marketplace, thus leading to very few updates in the game and the potential of servers being shut down and the game gets glassed.

In pvp areas Babs you can play as the icon characherters depending on where you preordered the game.Heres part of reson its held back..

animations arent smooth an it looks not much better than Champions online in that reguard.

Now i had this preordered sunday the collectors editon from gogamer.com.Pc verison.. monday its delayed til 1st quarter of 2011... today i cancled my preorder. thats to long to wait imho. if beta turns out good ill look at it again.

Right now one of the mmos i do play is City of Heroes which Going Rogue expansion added alot of fun to the game for me as well as visualy. An its well worth 15 a month for me.Genarly people gripeing about mmo monthly is buying more than one or two new games they play for a week or two.Where as a mmo will long term be cheeper than buying console games .

pardon my poor spelling an typen today please got a nasty sinus infection an dizzy but wanted to chime in on dc online.Sony was bad for releaseing product to soon as in it wasnt ready like eq expansions, everquest 2, star wars galaxy etc etc.At least this go of it they are trying to do things right.

they better because they made a deal with wb that included the matrix online which they let die on the vine just to get the rights to dc online. They have alot riding on this game.

@Marshal Victory: I think having SOE develop the game was a problem in and of its own.  Those guys make some hardcore MMOs, like Vanguard and EQ.  A lot of the systems that they use, like experience loss upon death, crafting, and other things are very user-UNfriendly.  It works against the ideals that I can only assume DCUO is trying to accomplish - find a widespread audience and make a solid MMO with it.  Champions has had lackluster support since its launch, City of Heroes is still raging but not the greatest game in the MMO market...  When it comes down to it, the type of folks that want to seriously play an MMO are into elves, dwarves, and fantasy ideals.

Moreover, I think this game more than anything right now is creating a lot of problems in the expectations department.  Knowing SOE and the games they develop, as well as knowing the way an MMO works, I think people are looking at this CGI trailer and thinking "I want to play THAT".  However, you aren't going to play anything remotely CLOSE to that.  Instead, you are going to play something where your character will stand around and sway a little bit, then you hit a button between 1 and 8 on your keyboard to make him use a skill, and you'll repeat that over and over.

Comic books just aren't something for the MMO market.  I hope this game will be good, but my expectations are incredibly low because I know the history of these types of games, the history of games that have long development times and massive numbers of delays, and the history of comic book franchises in the world of gaming.

i love that trailer, im not getting the game, but the trailer is amazing. i just think, that since itll be online and there will most likely be millions of people playing, and theres a limited number of characters in the DC universe, it would make sense to make your own hero. but if its playable offline, it would be cool to play as any character.

Guys the game IS COMING OUT.  There is a beta going on RIGHT NOW.  If you pre-ordered the game copy your reciept and send it in on  http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/betakey/
There is NO REASON to worry, it is better that they delay the game and have a LONG BETA than have hardly no beta and ship garbage.  Really this isn't that big of a thing.

Posted by TheMess1428
@EpitomeofCool: Well it's supposed to be like Justice League Unlimited where you can team up with the established heroes but if you preorder the game you can play as a certain hero throughout the game. And I heard it's only create-a-player when you play with other ppl online. You can play normal heroes in the story mode I think.
Posted by Pizawle

We will.

Posted by crusader8463

Because of the DC license this game will always have a small following, but it looks way too much like the crap fest that was Champions Online for me to be even remotely interested. I'm going to wait for City of Heroes 2 myself. Assuming I can pull my self away from The Old Republic to play it by the time it comes out anyway.

This is true, you'd be more pissed if they come out with crap out the gate. With a multi player world there is no game until players make it.

This is probably a good thing, they probably realised what they had wasn't quite finished enough or something..

I can't say I completely agree with you on this one, Babs. It's extremely disappointing that this game has been pushed back again. It is a bit ridiculous that they show you this stellar teaser for the game, but it has nothing to even do with the actual game.
I really thought it could be a lot of fun to get this game and go on quests with other members of the Comic Vine community. Scheduling parties for certain events, or forming your own special clans/teams on Comic Vine to take into the games. That was going to be the appeal for me. I have a PS3, but I don't own a lot of games with online play options, because I don't know a lot of people who play online games. I'd rather play with people I'm on friendly terms with than strangers.

I do see your comparison to City of Heroes. Though, isn't City of Heroes just trying to be a WoW, but with super powers? It's the essence of MMOs. It's pretty much the same idea, but that game doesn't have the real mythos of DC. DC has huge events they can play out from their comic's history.

I do strongly disagree with you on the idea of playing as the DC super heroes in game. That would be just a Justice League game and not an MMO. Online play with large groups would be kind of pointless. If you had the option of playing as Batman. You would just have 300 people running around Gotham dressed as Batman. Though, that doesn't sound as crazy now after the release of the Batman Inc. news.
MMOs are about making your own character. My biggest concern about DC Online is that they have really great character design tools so I could create my own unique hero. That there wasn't going to be a bunch of people with the very same look. My disappointment in the coverage is that they haven't shown any of the tools for character creation.

I will say that while I was really excited to play this game. I will not buy this game if I have to pay a subscription fee in order to actually play it. That never makes sense to me. If I buy this game. I should be able to play it. I understand charging for DLC, but not to actually play a game every month.
If I was to buy Modern Warfare 2 for my PS3, I get to play the online features for free. Most people buy that game to play it online. The single player campaign is nothing more than a tutorial to get a feel for the controls.

That's why I'm concerned that they make really stellar character creator tools. Final Fantasy Online and WoW have pretty good tools. If DC Online can't really make some great tools for making your own hero. The game will be pointless.

Babes the average game takes 2-3 years of development. MMOs take even longer.  There is nothing in the development time of this game that is unique for the genre.  In the game you do interact with all of the big characters you just don't get to be them.

As for actually playing this game?  How hell no. I hate MMOs.  I would be much more excited about a single player RPG with co-op elements.  But a MMO? Not going to happen.

Posted by The Velvet Rabbit

I hope so, because I would definitely play it.   really though, I'm pretty sure there is going to be a game, because it costs good money to run a beta server, and I don't see them scrapping this so far along in the process.   unfortunately, that doesn't mean the game can't still end up terrible, but I'm keeping my nervous little fingers crossed and hoping it'll be fantastic.   that said, any idea on whether they're keeping with the create-a-character function?   because I can certainly see that being a very sticky situation in the 'double-edged swords' department :(

Here is the truth: They are afraid of WOW and it's expansion pack. The game will not be released on the PS3 as it is. They will not get the sales to justify it so it is possible that they may use the technology already developed to make a dumbed down game for the PS3 down the road but I doubt it. Their hope is to just get the PC version with enough content to wow and to keep gamers coming back.

Problem is nothing has really made the game that much more compelling then other comic book based games besides graphics upgrades. It is just City of Heroes this time with DC characters which is not enough. The DC brand is also not strong enough to support this type of game compared to say Star Wars. The only movies that have really made any sort of big press by the time the game comes out is the Dark Knight which ironically might have made a better MMO. We saw how well Batman Arkham Asylum did because of that plus it is Batman.

They also must have looked at low pre-order numbers and saw that having it out by Christmas wasn't really going to effect sales that much. Another factor is APB, a game that had some hype but got released and died without many caring. APB didn't have a license behind it but DC and Sony don't want that to happen because it could hurt other DC games and other entertainment products.

The best thing they could do honestly is make a free version that gives people the idea of what the game is like. Pay as you go and sell the content like "issues" for $15 each that will add additional villains, stories and worlds. They won't get that initial $50 right now but can always bundle that content and sell it down the road as a collection for $50. The future is not bright with many MMOs and besides this it is only the upcoming Star Wars MMO that has any chance to succeed.

they are trying to get the most people to sign up as possible. launching right before cataclysm is a bad idea if you want to suceed. plus extended beta testing could not hur t the prefomance if this game

it looks freaking amazing and im ok with the push backs as long as the end product is good and quality

Yeah i am kinda pissed at this as well. I was sooooo happy when I heard about the november release date and of course it had to get delayed.

The problem people have seen with some betas on MMORPG games is that people test the game and are like it is pretty good, but is lacking in content... but they will have that. When the game comes out there is no content. Not saying that is the issue with this game but you pretty much have to put all your cards on the table now instead of a game like WOW where you can keep building and getting better. They don't have that luxury anymore.

That video was pretty cool

@The Ghost.: I know, but I'm trying to keep optimistic - something like this has so much promise, but I can really see it falling short.   that's why the best I could've hoped for was a talented project lead, and alas, the lead developer for this was the producer for SWG, so if Galaxies was really that terrible, then I can say that this officially SUCKS :(
Posted by Cthulhudrew

Other than the great graphics and some interesting variations on powers, DCUO doesn't really offer me anything that City of Heroes doesn't, so I'm going to stick with the game I know and enjoy.

The thing about DCUO and the defunct Marvel Online is the problem inherent in their appeal; they are recognizable brands and characters, and that's the whole draw, but there really isn't a way to make them in the MMO format that doesn't and wouldn't detract from that very same appeal. As someone else said, you'd have 1000 Supermen or Wolverines running around and aside from figuring out how you distinguish between them (serial number? Superman000234?), you also have to make custom powersets for each individual character (thus limiting the number of available options). Not to mention I'm sure DC legal would have some concerns (unfounded or not) about the manner in which such characters were represented- given the sorts of language and abuse on many MMOs, they might not see them as being family friendly.

So, I dunno. Maybe better minds than mine can figure out a great way to make it work, but for now, I'm sticking with CoH.

Posted by The Mighty Monarch

I'll be happy if the gameplay isn't the same pile of steaming horse crap that every FREAKING MMO EVER USES. Seriously. I can't stand how absolutely terrible the gameplay is on just about every MMO ever made. Why do all of them have to use such an awful system why can't they just PLAY THE WAY A NORMAL GAME DOES, BUT ONLINE. Like Phantasy Star Online and Universe. They played like a regular game. If this game plays like a normal game, that automatically makes it better and different than City of Heroes.

Posted by invadernick

maybe the game is done, and it was pushed back because WoW was coming out around the same time. The delay was announced just after WoW's release date announcement. I see it as a good thing though, it will give the team time to patch any issues that occur during the beta. The beta and the original release date seemed too close for them to make any changes before the first day they go live.

Posted by saiyan_earthling

Delays don't suck, it can at least give you some time to think about and do other things until that time comes.

Posted by Blindside002

This won't be a good quality game I'm almost certain of it, these overhyped deals never end up well. Also I've seen gameplay and story segments, it will be lucky if it can keep its head above water for the next couple of years.

I'd love to see the DC universe online or have it's own website! Just like Marvel does! That'd be super sweet!! :D

I agree here, but I'd like to add that DCU is probably being pushed back, do to re-programming. What jakob187 is talking about is the old MMO model, the grinders. The reason I stopped playing back in 06, they're not really... fun.
This is the hope for me! This is kind of a plug, but check this out!

Example:
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/pax-10-guild-wars-2/704710

Notice anything? They move while they fight. Now this is a fantasy mmo, in that re-guard its a little safer than a super themed game. But while City of heroes is still occupying its niche, Its lack of gratifying combat opens the door for competition, and in Superhero games its all about the combat.
The next big superhero mmo while have to have contact combat, destructible environments, extensive character customization, strong class division, and thrilling movement, its all about movement!

But judging by the combat footage, this game may suck, if they don't change it up.

Sony and DC need to stop playing with my emotions and put this game out already!

It will come out and it will be broken because it is an MMO.
