Good work, G-Man, I dare you to do one of these on hawkman though :P

This was really awesome. Who knew a character could go through so many reboots and still have a crappy early life...yeesh. >.<

I think that the Miller/Newell origin is still up in the air as far as it being canon.
A lot of people don't want it to be canon, because of it's implications and some people think
it degrades Selina's character. So, in the 90's, during DC's Zero Hour, they created the story
of orphan Selina. But, with Brubaker's inclusion of Selina's sister Maggie, and the return of
Holly ("Go-Nightly"), I think that it is still considered canon.

Others might say that Selina was just a dominatrix taking men's money, as a way to justify
her character.

I hope it isn't but one of the things I really like about the Batman character origins is that they're either unclear or they change all the time. This friend of mine me about the origin of the Riddler, I told her what I remembered, and she was totally underwhelmed (she had seen some of the movies and thought they were the same as the comics). Then I told her not to bother learning the origins, they change all the time and it's more fun just to focus on what's happening now. That's always been my opinion.

That would have to be a 90-minute Expert.

Great video, love the sound effects and Mac (right?) moving images coolness.

Good video, G-Man!

Tsk, tsk, you should've gotten Babs to do this.

The present canon doesn't follow Year One as much, Selina wasn't a prostitute but rather a juvenile deliquent who was recruited by a woman named Mama Fortuna to join a child gang of thieves. Selina and her friend Sylvia attempt to be child prostitutes but Sylvia gets swept up in that lifestyle and Selina abandons it and decides to resort to burglary. Her parents storyline is similar and even the fact that she disappeared but her character is largely altered from her late 80's early 90's counterpart.

I was actually surprised Babs wasn't doing this one.  I mean, I know G-Man's the "Three Minute Expert" guy, but still...
Still a great video.

Not to be a prick but her relationship with bruce ended after Hush when Bruce's paranoia pushes her away

Yeah guess the prostitute origin was too edgy, sexist, whatever for some people. Go figure. I liked it.

I woud actually like to see a Hawkman one. His orgins are confusing as hell. From my understanding he is a resurrected pharoah who has alien equipment from when they visited Egypt.

I don't think that origin adds any value to the character.

Also, is it accurate to call Stan her boyfriend? I don't think rape constitutes a relationship. Ugh, how distateful.

Again, with Holly's return, this makes Year One valid. She was a prostitute, dominatrix, or at least worked with them. I think the Year One, Catwoman #0, Catwoman Annual #2, and Sylvia/Mama Fortuna origins can all be combined.

@CatBoy: Holly's return was simultaneous to the revised and current canonical origin story, as a matter in fact, Holly is the one who kills Mama Fortuna (when Sylvia took her mantle). It's never stated that Catwoman was a prostitute like in Year One by either Selina or Holly throughout the series, a lot was borrowed but not the two stories don't mesh. The only indication we got that she may have ever been involved in prostitution was when she was a pre-teen with Sylvia and it seems like a more feeble attempt at that.....

I much prefer this origin story because I feel like Selina blackmailing the orphanage for embezzlement then using the leverage to erase her identity and swipe some bling in the process develops her as more of an independent mastermind rather than just a sex kitten who accidentally stumbles into heroism and thievery. The only reason Frank Miller made her a prostitute to begin with is because he obviously has a chavinist virgin/whore complex when it comes to women which is very evident in the dichotomy between Selina and her sister - Saint & Sinner (seen in a lot of his comics). He's always said he enjoyed drawing women but writing for them has never been his strong suit at all, he's one of those writer/artists who says "Oh yeah, she's a strong character because she's comfortable with her sexuality" - well what part of being comfortable with your sexuality involves exhibitionism or prostitution?

@chipsnopotatoes: Couldn't agree more, it's not even consistent with Selina's character. I think one of the biggest misconceptions about Catwoman is that she's a vixen temptress who relies on wiles to get by. I see her as having too strong of a will and far too much pride to entertain merely men. As a kid she was dropped in a river, tied up in a bag and not only managed to escape but she also outsmarted the adults around her- it's hard to believe she would give up on that and just rely on prostitution to get by.

I had no idea Selena's history was so tawdry, and engaging. I appreciate the insight, G-Man. I laughed more than a few times, and gained an informed appreciation for Catwoman.

Man, comics are confusing. Guess this leaves it open for the Nolans to come up with whatever origins story they like for the movie.

She is the only woman for Batman.
Posted by battyfan1

loved this video.....go to hell Miller..........and she is the only one for Bats

Posted by Munsu
@battyfan1:
I second the Miller going to hell part. Seriously, every female character he writes has to be a prostitute, or related to prostitutes. It's a little sick. Then Brubaker had to go and enforce Miller's take of her in his run and had her sleep around with a bunch of old men like Slam (on top of his desk even, lol), and later she went and slept with Slam's son (who died soon after) which produced a kid, Helena. Then she later had to give up her child because babies and comics never work out. Just brutal.

I just feel bad for her and BIG fans of her character, since they have had to suffer through a lot of bad ideas. You have my sympathies. At least most of the bad parts of her history, prostitute/Helena/Slam, don't get referenced that much or not at all anymore.

This was awesome. Can't believe I missed it. It's nice to see your favorites character's history get compressed into such a neat little package.

@G-Man: you are really fantastic at 3 minutes expert videoes! you must have inspired from some things. =) Two thumb ups!

For my money, Hathaway is the best we've seen of this character on film. I prefer the Robin Hood / sarcastic / Hooker with a Heart of Gold version over a bunch of kitty litter puns.

Unfortunately for you, that's unlikely to happen. Merchandising reasons, you know.

Catwoman would make the perfect wife for Batman.

Posted by gabisalamoni

@Nanara I don't think she would ever be a good wife to anyone, nor Batman a good husband, but they are still perfect for eachother.
