Vertigo Discussion Thread

#1 Edited by VNU (55 posts) - - Show Bio

Since every other comic and publisher seems to have an official discussion thread, I decided that Vertigo needs one too, so here it is. In this thread feel free to talk about ALL things Vertigo, from The Sandman, to Bite Club, to Preacher, to V for Vendetta, to Fables, to even Muktuk Wolfsbreath. Feel free to discuss or recommend anything Vertigo!

Damn anyone else reading DMZ, This is prehaps one of the greatest comics I have read in along time, Vertigo seem to be the only company that keep me guessing with such great ideas, I have high hopes for the rest of this series, I keep meaning to pick up Northlander again, I may drop Batman to get it.

DMZ

Stuck in a paranoid and frightened quest to crush it's enemies abroad, the US government forgot about the thousands of armed militias that reside within America's borders and the unthinkable has happened. These militias have rose up and America is in the grips of a second civil war and the once bustling metropolis of Manhattan is now a no-mans land and the site of vicious fighting. This is the premise for "DMZ," a new ongoing series from Vertigo that launches today by writer Brian Wood and artist Riccardo Burchielli. CBR News spoke with both Wood and Burchielli about "DMZ," a series that gives new meaning to the lyrics, "If I can make it there I can make it anywhere."

The idea for "DMZ" has been percolating in Wood's imagination for quite awhile. "I've been a resident of NYC for a long time, around 13 years, not counting my 18-month time away on the west coast," Wood told CBR News. "Spending every day for 13 years in the city would give anyone a lifetime of story ideas and 'DMZ' is exactly that: city stories, but amplified. Setting them in a war zone just amps up the intensity, the stakes, the emotion, the action."

The opening of "DMZ" drops the readers right into the thick of the war torn concrete canyons of New York City. "The war's been going on for years, and in fact it's reached a stalemate," Wood explained. "People are starting to lose interest, and its not front page news so much anymore. But what you do learn about it in the first issue, in broad strokes, is that Middle America, literally, has risen up out of frustration, anger, and poverty to challenge the government's position of preemptive war and police action throughout the world. It's left America neglected and unattended, and also unprotected, at least from a major threat within its own borders. Then isolationist and religious militias get involved and arm the people, and then it's suddenly the Second American Civil War. They push to the coasts where they're stopped, creating a no-man's-land in Manhattan, with the 'Free Armies' in Jersey facing off against the US Army in Brooklyn.

I don't need to sell it, it sells itself.

Dr O is an awesome one, but nothing is like DMZ. One of a kinda comic and its an awesome comic, try picking up the first issue an see how ya like it.

Just try it

#20 Posted by Darkchild (40547 posts) - - Show Bio

NH

In Vertigo Dr Occult had very few standalone his own series but he was one of the main characters(kinda) in the books of Magic series. And almost all of their spin off series he had a cameo or a integral part into the story.

Vertigo Visions he had a one shot about himself. A really cool issue, but one of the main comics he was in were the Trenchcoat Brigade four issue mini. Along with the Books of Magic first mini arc.

LMAO

@NH: Im gonna do a little digging and see if i could find some Vert Comics that really would get your attention. Since i Know u know of very few of them.

Your brand of humor youd absolutly love Transmetropolitan(Transmet for short).

Doom Patrol (of course)

Id tell you to read Sandman but i dont know if youd actually enjoy it.

Alot of Vertigo is made up of minis, yeah theirs ongoings like DMZ and Northlanders. But most are mini's

I was supposed to get some Fables and Lucifer TPBs yesterday but my comicbook store was closed for some unfathomable reason.

T___T

#34 Posted by aztek_the_lost (30740 posts) - - Show Bio

I was going to get two Fables TPB's on Wednesday...but when I brought them to the cashier I realized I was still broke from last week's excursion to the shop and had to settle on just one :(

#35 Posted by Gloom (3653 posts) - - Show Bio

Ooh, so you got the first TPB? Or did you start the series already?

#36 Posted by aztek_the_lost (30740 posts) - - Show Bio

I got the 10th because the 9th wasn't in...now I just need 9, 11 and the 1001 one-shot and I'm caught up...well with the trades anyways, than there's all those issues that haven't been collected yet...

Fables is doing a good job draining my wallet

O________________________O

I didn't think you were so far along in the series. I'm only at the 4th or 5th TPB I think.

#38 Posted by aztek_the_lost (30740 posts) - - Show Bio

I get a Fables TPB at least once a week (most of the time) and I am really loving them...its not the greatest comic I've ever read, nor my favorite, but its got some interesting stories and characters...just wait til you get to TPB 6, than the real war begins, woo! but #4 was probably my favorite...the soldiers, Jack, everything, really cool stuff

I might try some of them (hate that DC and marvel are stealing all of my money lol)

So far I've only read a few series of Vertigo to be honest

V for Vendetta

Watchmen?

Doom Patrol

The Filth

Animal Man

#45 Posted by Nighthunter (28561 posts) - - Show Bio

oh and Enemy Ace, f@cking cool

#46 Edited by aztek_the_lost (30740 posts) - - Show Bio

@NH

Watchmen is Vertigo-style but it was published before Vertigo existed and never given over to the imprint...

Anyways, to you I might recommend (excluding everything DC has recommended to you already):

Beware the Creeper (that whole terrorist type comic, its only five issues, oh and its not Jack Ryder, its a different Creeper exclusive to this series)

Kid Eternity (I myself haven't read it, but he's one of your Teen Titans, so if you like him he has two series by Vertigo...a three issue and a sixteen issue)

The Invisibles (I haven't finished it but it seems your style of comic, its collected in 7 TPB's)

and of course...

The Sandman, I don't think it may be your style but everyone loves The Sandman, its like Watchmen, only better...wait, that's a crappy comparison, Watchmen and Sandman are nothing alike, but Sandman is still way better than Watchmen or practically any other comic out there

oh and Enemy Ace has nothing to do with Vertigo last I checked o_O

though it may bear similarities to Sgt. Rock - Between Hell and a Hard Place?

Kid Eternity was pretty damn awesome.

Id suggest to NH Exterminators but i figured he'd be reading enough with what we already suggested

oh and I can't believe I forgot Kid Eternity, loved that series
