 Jughead always finds a way to get revenge.

We received a press release from Archie Comics yesterday announcing that VERONICA #202 will introduce Riverdale High’s first openly-gay character, Kevin Keller, in a story titled “Isn’t it Bromantic?” The issue sees America’s favorite girl brunette, Veronica, pursuing Mr. Keller and him trying to let her down gently regarding his disinterest. The chase borne from misunderstanding ratchets up in hilarity after Kevin defeats Jughead in a burger eating contest, making Veronica fall even harder for him. Kevin Keller’s introduction is a conscious effort by Archie Comics (as stated by its CEO, Jon Goldwater) to keep Archie reflective of teens’ modern world and to make Riverdale current and inclusive.

I’m going to skip the discussion of how this reflects the changing times and bring up a very relevant problem I have with this storyline. Something I simply can’t suspend my disbelief over. What girl on planet Earth crushes on a guy after he’s won an eating contest? I mean, MAYBE after she’s known him for a while, but… no, not even. It’s like winning an award for dirtiest bathroom or filthiest laundry. An accomplishment? Maybe. Something to brag about to anybody but your buddies? Absolutely not. All the ladies in the Comic Vine community chime in here. Would you honestly be that attracted to a guy who’s just sucked down 10 Whoppers and probably gotten every sort of ketchup, mustard and mayo on his shirt?

Then again, I recall seeing something about that Japanese Kobayashi dude who wins all the hot dog eating contests getting a lot of groupies, so what I do know? Anyway, see for yourself in VERONICA #202, which hits on September 1.

First thing that comes to mind when I saw this article . Was Banky and Hooper X's conversation in Chasing Amy. LOL

Right on! I think this is just another small step in the right direction. =)

Surprisingly progressive

Lol o Jughead you never quit?

#7 Posted by danhimself (22320 posts) - - Show Bio

if they're trying to keep up with the times the why is Jughead still wearing that crown thingy?

#8 Posted by Chibi-Iroh (388 posts) - - Show Bio

I am sorry but this is just unnecessary. Why do they have to introduce an openly-gay character? Its not like by Archie not having a gay character people would crap bricks. But when this is officially released America is going to crap houses.

#9 Posted by Son_of_Magnus (15258 posts) - - Show Bio

They should make Archie gay that would be hilarious

Wait till Fox News hears this, they’ll love it…but the real issue here is…why don’t I get any hot brunettes when I eat dozens of burgers?

Why wouldn't they?  They have openly heterosexual couples.  Are you saying there is something wrong with being gay?

@Chibi-Iroh:
how is this unnecessary? Whats unnecessary is the fact America still "craps bricks" about this kind of stuff Riverdale High is a high school I don't know where your from, but when I was in school I knew of more than one openly gay guy. I am glad Archie Comics is doing this.

To the other question... No I would not be attracted to a guy if he won an eating contest(if I was just meeting him of course!)

what's the characters name, Inferiorego????

Are you implying your High School didn't have any homosexuals? You must be from Iran...pssh! Why introduce any fictional character? Why have a comic book High School dramedy? It's all relative.

As far as Veronica falling for Kevin even harder after he wins the eating contest, there are people in the world that have strange fetishes... I guess this is just more insight to V's character?

Wow. Archie is.... relevant again? Didn't see that coming. Fox is gonna have a field day, and I'll have to hear my grandpa moan about it, and I'll mock him, and then get a good laugh.... and now I like this news. Yay. ^_^

OH. MY. GOD. I can't wait to see what FOX News has to say about this.
This character seems pretty likeable, "What's the deal with those three?" Ha-ha-ha!

lol I reported this yesterday but no one seemed to care!

I just can't wrap my mouth around it.

On another note, maybe Archie will reveal to the world that he too is gay, and leave all the what if Betty or Veronica madness behind him!

@Ahmed Sherif:
I always kinda though Archie comics were kids stuff too.
They never quite made it over here in merry ole England but i'm just not sure how this'd work.

This is good.  If Archie Comics can have an openly gay character then hopefully it can be seen as a sign that the majority of America is finally coming around.  It does my heart proud.  Kudos, Mr. Goldwater!

@Gylan Thomas:
How is homosexuality not appropriate for children?? It's not like they are going to be showing Kevin getting all hot and bothered with someone! Kids need a better understanding on the matter anyways.

Very true.

P.S. What is the deal with those three?
#34 Posted by Gylan Thomas (2727 posts) - - Show Bio
@KattVonNoir:
I tottally agree.
I'm just not familiar with Archie and I do think it has to be handled properly.
A lot of adults don't understand it so will an Archie comic really help kids get their heads around the idea?
#35 Posted by Gylan Thomas (2727 posts) - - Show Bio
@erik:
lol
What is the deal with those three?
As a non American I know jack about Archie.
#36 Posted by Erik (31777 posts) - - Show Bio
@Gylan Thomas:
I am American and never read a single issue of Archie. But to me it looks to me like the blonde guy is fortunate enough to have 2 girls after him. That is why I was asking.
#37 Posted by Gylan Thomas (2727 posts) - - Show Bio
@erik:
But isn't he supposed to be a bit of a dork?
And he's really more ginger than blonde.
Combine those two and no way he'd have two girls chasin' his ginger nuts.
#38 Posted by Erik (31777 posts) - - Show Bio
@Gylan Thomas:
Well whatever. I have never seen the series in color.
#39 Posted by KattVonNoir (250 posts) - - Show Bio
@Gylan Thomas:
I don't read Archie either or haven't since I was little anyways, I think Archie's little 3 some thing hes got going on is way more inappropriate! :P
jk. I am sure they will handle it fine, we as people make things a bigger deal than it really is. I don't know if it will or not but it is a step in the right direction!!
#40 Posted by Gylan Thomas (2727 posts) - - Show Bio
@KattVonNoir:
Again, I agree.
But is it all just a publicity gimmick?
Archies wierd threesome thing is just sillyness as far as I can tell where as here it seems if any thing they're setting up questions for kids to ask and after that it's down to how mom and dad handle things.

Other Archie characters go on dates. Will Kevin? How will the young readership see that?

I totally agree with you that it's a step in the right direction but I'm just curious where it's gonna go.
#41 Posted by Gylan Thomas (2727 posts) - - Show Bio
@erik:
Pretty sure he's ginger though.
A lady's sexy as a red head but a dude's just ginger and that aint hot.
Disagree?
Why does hollywould pretty much ignore ginger actors? When a ginger character shows in an adaptation he's neve played by a ginger actor.
Jimmy Olsen for instance.

Jughead is just weird. No one in their right mind wears those any more, and maybe that's why he likes it. :)
Get rid of Jughead's trademark beanie and you get rid of part of Jughead. As much as they try to update Archie's world, some anachronisms have to remain. Otherwise it's just not Archie any more.

EDITOR IN CHIEF: Alright, folks. Last year was a good year. We tried some new stuff, introduced some new characters, and it worked out well for us. Now... WHAT'S NEXT?

Dead silence.

EDITOR 1: Umm, we can introduce another minority character?

Disgusted groans.

EDITOR 1 (DEFENSIVE): We don't have all minorities represented yet! I don't think we have any Pacific Islander characters!

EDITOR 2: How about a handicapped character?

EDITOR IN CHIEF: Moose is dyslexic, that's close enough. Come on, people!

EDITOR 3: Wait! I've got it! (rises slowly to his feet) A - GAY - CHARACTER.

Silence. Then, from the back of the room, a clap slowly begins. Others join in. Louder and louder it grows until the walls are shaking. The Editor in Chief rushes toward Editor 3 and embraces him while tears stream down his face.

EDITOR IN CHIEF: You son of a b****! You beautiful son of a b****! (thrusting his fist into the air) This is our year! This is it! Marvel and DC can suck it!

I wish Jughead would just come out as well and maybe him and the new guy could open a cute little dinner in the east village and make a spin off series with it. I always felt like Archie was the series young teens would read and relate too, but that it stopped evolving in the 1950's - finally it seems like the writers caught up with time. Good job!
