Venom
Character » Venom appears in 2798 issues.
The Venom symbiote originally bonded with Peter Parker, AKA Spider-Man, during his adventure in the first Secret Wars on the Beyonder's planet called Battleworld. Initially, he thought the symbiote was just an attire. However, upon his discovery, he rejected it because he realized that it was sentient. Since then, the symbiote has bonded with several other hosts, including Eddie Brock, Angelo Fortunato, Flash Thompson, Ann Weying, and even Carol Danvers. Currently, its host is Eddie Brock.
Off My Mind: Who Will Become The New Venom?
As part of Marvel's new Point 1 Initiative (where the issues with a .1 after the number mark a jumping on point for new readers), Amazing Spider-Man #654.1 will feature the birth of a new Spider-Man. There will be a new webslinger bonded to the Venom symbiote and he will be showing Peter Parker up in the hero department.
In other words, we're getting a new Venom.
Those of you that are not reading Amazing Spider-Man lately (shame on you) might be wondering what happened to the past Venoms. Why is there a need for a new one?
== TEASER ==
When Eddie Brock got cancer, it was revealed that the symbiote was feeding off it and was keeping him alive. Eddie had a change of heart after returning to religion and wanted to be rid of the symbiote. He auctioned the suit off for $100 million (which he gave to charity). It was bought by crimelord Don Fortunato, who gave it to his son, Angelo. Angelo turned out to be a chump and the suit let him fall to his death when it realized how unworthy he was. The symbiote then bonded with Mac Gargan, formerly known as Scorpion. When Gargan was captured at the end of Siege, he and the suit were separated. Now the suit will have a new host.
At first I wondered if the new Venom could be one of the former ones. Eddie is now Anti-Venom after Mr. Negative cured him of his cancer and transformed him (plus it was current writer Dan Slott that wrote that story arc so we can assume he won't try to reverse that). Angelo is dead and Mac was seen in issue #649at the Raft, with hints of the return of Scorpion. With the suit at the Raft, it could manage to escape whatever containment they have it in and there would be many potential hosts (that hate Spider-Man) to choose from. This won't be the case as the information for issue #654.1 suggests this Venom will be more of a hero.
One character that readers have been suggesting was Peter Parker's former roommate and police officer, Vin Gonzalez. When we saw Gonzalez released from prison, he revealed to Harry Osborn that he had a goblin tattoo and was now somehow involved with Norman Osborn. Vin did the right thing by testifying against fellow corrupt police officers and admitting blame for his part, but having a connection to Osborn doesn't suggest that he would now have noble intentions.
Another name I heard mentioned by someone with a connection to Marvel is John Jameson. He's still active in the Air Force and J. Jonah Jameson mentioned he was about to go on a daring mission. The doctors at the Raft suggested they were going to get top men to study the symbiote. Unless the government wants to try to make a hero with the symbiote and John volunteers, I don't quite see the connection or how he and the suit could end up bonding.
Of course there's the possibility that the new Venom won't be someone that Spider-Man already knows. This would make more sense. There doesn't have to be a connection between Venom and Spider-Man each time. It makes sense that the symbiote will seek out someone with feelings towards Spider-Man but taking an existing character and making them Venom is too much of a coincidence.
What are your thoughts on a new Venom? Do you want it to be Eddie or Mac? Are you hoping it'll be Vin or John? Would you rather see a new character become Venom? Will we discover his identity right away or will we be kept guessing? Amazing Spider-Man #654.1 is due in February but we'll be on the look out for any clues before then.
Is it me or does the suit looks a little like when Angelo had the suit?
Edit: And I still think Vin is probably going to end up getting the suit.
Well, considering that there is a new Hobgoblin, I wouldn't be too surprised if it's a new character to be Venom. Vin being the new Venom would really spice things up though.
You think this means the suit is being unfaithful? I thought it was suppose to be bonded to the host. If it can switch hosts so easily. It diminishes the meaning of the bond.
I don't feel the slightest bit of shame. Quesada ripped the story apart all in his quest to get those new readers he felt couldn't relate to a married hero. He had the hero make a deal with the devil. All for his own desires. Well, he can have those new readers at the cost of the old. Under his control the series is no better than a soap opera. As long as Qusada is attached to Spider-man. I will never buy it." Those of you that are not reading Amazing Spider-Man lately (shame on you) might be wondering what happened to the past Venoms. As readers, we only have one way to influence a product. That's with purchasing power. I don't like what he did to the story. So, I wont buy it, and I don't trust him with the series under his watch as editor. You can hardly argue that an editor doesn't have editorial control.
"Ben Reilly! ...yeah right i wish. Seriously though someone needs to take up the scarlet spider mantle, its too cool to be gone forever. "
Patrick aka a clone of MVP is the current Scarlet Spider

In the name of creation, Venom looks terrible.
the only thing that worries me is that were gonna be forced to buy these .1 issues just to get the entire story. if thats the case, then i dont like it.
They should let Hellion from the X-men be the next Venom. Hes not doin anything right now and vemons power amping up his TK he could do a lot of destruction and could become a thorn in Spidermans side...jsut sayin.
I hope someone new becomes venom, maybe someone that spider-man meets for the first time and then they become Venom
I want the new Venom to go back to Venom's roots as a being of pure hatred and anger towards Spider-Man. Don't make him a hero...hell, don't even make him an anti-hero.
An Evil Venom is the Best Kind of Venom!

Preach!!!! One More Day is one of the worst things in comics, I got back into Spider-Man after Shed and then kept it up with Grimm Hunt. GREAT STORIES!!! Then came OMIT...sigh and I remembered why I quit giving a rat's sack. I figured Waid writing Origin of The Species would turn things about, gave it a few issues before I declared "FAIL!". Big Time is meaningless to me, Slott doesn't know how to write Spidey point blank, period. So I too feel no shame in not purchasing a sub par title just because it features a beloved flagship character." You think this means the suit is being unfaithful? If more fan boys would get off their knees and take their heads out of their asses then maybe the industry as a whole would improve. Would you keep going to a restaurant that gave you food poisoning? How about a Dr. that misdiagnosed you or botched your surgery? A mechanic that cut your break line? So why, oh why, oh why do comic book buyers do the equivalent?!!! Money talks, not your prepubescent circle jerks in the comic shop about how you don't like the current status quo/arc/costume/etc. WHILE STILL BUYING THE TITLE!!! Marvel/DC could care a less about your letters/emails full of complaints, what they do care about is whether or not you're buying it. Seriously, did the 90's not teach anybody that the companies generally don't give half a steamer about their characters, just how much money they can make. I didn't enjoy Morrison's Batman, the worst of it was B&R IMO which was what I was reading, so I dropped it, spent that time on something else, and I happily discovered Marjorie Liu's fantastic Black Widow run. Dropped Uncanny when Fraction suddenly forgot that plot supposed to MOVE. That money helped me to move into Hickman's great S.H.E.I.L.D. My point is this, if a million of us hate it and QUIT BUYING IT, then we are heard. So speak up, if you want to know what's going on, borrow from a friend/read it in the store.
As far as this new venom goes...Eh? Don't like the new design, and honestly don't care. Only Venoms that matter are Eddie (Anti-Venom is stupid as a retarded amoeba by the way) and Mac. I'm sick of the symbiotes to be perfectly honest, the only thing that could make me more disinterested in this story would be the symbiotes host being a vampire clone of Pete...oh God, they wouldn't! Would they?! I mean that would be as stupid as having Pete make a deal with the dev...le sigh. Crap, it's going to happen isn't it?
My money was on Phil Urich, but now he's the new Hobgoblin so I guess that theory is out :P But I was pretty happy with Mac Gargan, I thought they hadn't yet really done enough with him yet.

Agreed!

"I can understand that you aren't buying the book based on the principle of the matter, but all he was saying is the current story arc is actually pretty good. Shady retcon aside, that doesn't change the quality of the current story arc. Although I suppose it should be mentioned that I just started reading Spider-Man with Big Time, so hearing about OMD/BND has really had no affect on me.

You should try Dan Slott's run... These past two issues have been the best Spider-Man story I've read in a really looong time!"

@G-Man: If Vin Gonzales is the new Venom, then this could be a good excuse to bring back Michelle as part of the supporting cast! (Sorry, I just like her... a bit)
What the hell with this HERO stuff??!?!?! I want Venom as a villain again! We have two components of Venom, we have Eddie as Anti (the 90s Anti-hero), and we have Venom... as the VILLAIN! That's how it should STAY!
