The Velvet Room (ベルベット・ルーム, Berubetto Rūm) is the major setting of the the Shin Megami Tensei games, and more specifically the Persona series that was created by ATLUS. It first appeared in the Revelations: Persona (女神異聞録ペルソナ, Megami Ibunroku Perusona) for the PC and PS1 platforms. It was released in Japan in September 20, 1996, and in the U.S. on October 26, 1997. It went on to be used in several of the following Persona games.
The Persona manga series is written and illustrated by Shūji Sogabe, and it began serialization ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Maoh magazine on April 2007. Its first manga appearance was in Persona 3 Volume 1 CH. 3 "Piece: 02 - La premiére pleine lune".
The Velvet Room itself is not set to any one form. It has appeared to be room, a large traveling elevator car, and the passenger area of a stretched limo. It seems with each gust of the Velvet Room it takes on a different appearance. The door to the Velvet Room can only be seen by those who have a contract and hold the power of the Fool Arcana.
The denizen of the Velvet Room are a complete enigma. They can exist between dreams and reality, but they can also enter the realm of humanity. They all appear to have certain magical powers. They also appear to service and guide any human who has entered their realm. It's said that to enter the Velvet Room is a sign that a person holds a deep desire to understand the truth.
