halfshellhero's Vampirella #9 review

Nowhere to Go

Vampirella Revamped

When the Vampirella monthly was relaunched in 2010, I thought it would be a good time to start reading the comic. When I was younger, I was always intrigued by the character because to be honest.... she had more skin showing than clothes. At the time however, I was not that big a fan of supernatural, horror, or otherwise not flights and tights comics. I also had no idea what the story was and no one else I knew was reading the book.

Flash forward to now and we're about a dozen books in to the story and I have to say, I am digging the series. The first story arc ended with issue #6 and I've been wanting more. I haven't gone back and read any of the old Vampirella books, but it seems that they created more dimensions for the character. For one, they gave her some normal clothes to wear, and really delved into her character; She seems intent on fulfilling her purpose as a weapon against the supernatural horrors of the world. At the same time, she doesn't consider herself a person, but rather a monster or a tool to be used. I think this is maybe why she has brought Sofia along on her missions, because she needs an anchor to the world and people that she is protecting.

This issue is more of a developmental issue than one packed with action. It starts with our leading ladies in the middle of action, but they soon find that their pursuers are a little more than they can handle so the hightail it. In the interim before the inevitable confrontation, Vampirella's character is developed a little more as well as her connection to her mysterious benefactor. While they begin to concoct a plan to fight the Karasu Shimai, their time runs out and we're left hanging until the next issue.

While not as exciting as past issues, I like the direction that this book is headed and want to read more. I recommend the series to the those wanting to read about the supernatural and more... unconventional heroines. It's a nice break from all the superheroes we've all become accustomed to.
