One of the most significant characters in the Spider-Man mythos has to be Uncle Ben. In some incarnations of the character, Uncle Ben was the driving force of Peter Parker. It was because of him that Peter becomes Spider-Man, not only because he feels responsible for his Uncle's death, but also because he knew it's what Uncle Ben would have wanted. After all, he did once say that "with great power, comes great responsibility." If you watched The Amazing Spider-Man movie which starred Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and actor Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, you might recall one of the most profound scenes from the film was the death of Peter's Uncle. In the film, Peter Parker's Uncle leaves the house to search for Peter, but is shot by a thief robbing a corner store and killed. The scene is particularly profound because Peter Parker looks on and witnesses the death of his Uncle first-hand. It is one of the film's saddest and most definitive moments, and it is also one that will surely be referenced in the sequel. However, it still comes as a bit of a surprise to us when we heard that actor Martin Sheen would reprise the role of Uncle Ben in the sequel to director Marc Webb's film.

In fact, Sheen himself confirmed that he would be returning to film the sequel during The Late Late Show in Ireland as reported by Comic Book Movie.

They've called me back, I don't know what the part is gonna be, but I'm going to be 'Uncle Ben' once again in Spider-Man next year. We shoot it in February.

While it will certainly be great to see Sheen return for shooting, we only hope that he won't be coming back from the dead to haunt Peter Parker. Perhaps Webb has some flash-back scenes he wants to film in mind? Maybe explore the relationship between Peter Parker and his Uncle and build upon moments we didn't see in the first film? Maybe we'll see Aunt May (played by actress Sally Field) and Peter reminisce about old times? Who knows. It does, however, gig us a bit more insight into what wee can expect to see in the upcoming film. What do you think of the news? Did you enjoy the first film? I actually really loved THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and I actually thought that MArtin Sheen's characterization of Uncle Ben was one of the film's strong points. I'm sure the scenes he will be returning for will be flashback scenes or dream sequences, but regardless, I whole-heartedly welcome President Bartlet...I mean...Uncle Ben's return. :-)

yes you see, since disney now owns both marvel and lucasarts they're doing a retcon and uncle ben was actually a jedi.

It will be a flashbacks. I'm betting it may even be a Uncle Ben with a child Peter. Let's also not forget the chance of a guilty nightmare.

I'm hoping that they'll fix the mistake they made in the first movie by having in the flashback Uncle Ben mention "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility," maybe have Peter thinking back on why he continues to be Spider-Man and remembering his Uncle once saying that (instead of the crappy version we got in the first movie).

Probably flashback. I did enjoyed the first film and am eagerly excited to see the second film! Can't wait.

Only slightly less ridiculous than Slott's stuff

Never understood the need to have him say the "line" the exact same way as it's been uttered since it's first been uttered. It was refreshing the way they had it in the movie and gave it a sense of fluidity.

Also I'm in agreement that this is likely just scenes with Peter's parents in the past.

ben was a mentor to max dillon/electro thus making a valid connection to spider-mans need to stop him being more personal in its evolution.

Loved the movie and Sheen's portrayal. I can only surmise that his appearance will be a flashback in the film. But who knows for certain?
