Deeds Finally Gets Some Much Needed Development
I've been whole-heartedly enjoying this series (beyond the Battle of the Atom BS), and this is a great way to bring us back into the series and reminding me just why I find it so endearing.
This issue focuses on the development of Benjamin Deeds. Don't remember who that is (at least by name)? Understandable, as, at this point, everyone else has been developed in some way to make them more likable. And, while Deeds has never been annoying, hasn't added much to the series as of yet. However, here we finally see the potential for some really interesting work involving his character in the future. It's light and fun, but with a hint of seriousness at the end that is somewhat surprising and good to see. It's nothing overly serious or demanding of your mind or attention, allowing us to fully enjoy the witty dialogue and great art.
Also, something that's really great is that, early on, Bendis quickly addresses the minor change that occurred in the organization because of the Battle of the Atom, i.e. the inclusion of some new characters living with them. However, they don't actually show up in the issue or affect it in any way. This is still solely the Uncanny X-Men, and that, to me, is fantastic. I really enjoy this tight-knit group, and I look forward to seeing more of them.
If I have one complaint, it's that don't see much of the rest of the crew other than Emma. While this isn't innately a bad thing, it's been a while since we've really gotten to enjoy these interactions, and I would have liked to see more of them.
While not the best of the best of issues, this is still a fantastic addition to what has been a great series.
