Uncanny X-Force #35 - Rainbows, Puppy Dogs & Sunshine

5

Sadly, all good things must come to an end. Rick Remender and Phil Noto deliver the final issue of one of our favorite series.

The Good

No one wants to think about the end of a favorite series. In some ways, this series isn't really ending. We'll still have another UNCANNY X-FORCE issue next month but with Marvel NOW!, we're seeing many books end and re-launch with new creative teams and directions.

If you've been following Rick Remender's run, you know you should never expect to have an idea what he might throw at you. With a "final issue," this is even more so. We're just coming off the team's latest and biggest battle. A lot was at stake and they've suffered some losses as well. What are the chances Remender will ease up on the characters in his final issue?

What Remender does do here he show us his skill at characterization. Wolverine and Psylocke have suffered quite a bit thanks to Remender. Seeing the aftermath of recent events shows this isn't just a book full of big and crazy action. Wolverine's inner monologue and Betsy's conversation with her brother are definitely highlights in a series full of highlights. What about Deadpool? Remender is writing him like no one else has.

We have seen many great artists on this series as well and having Phil Noto on board for the last is a welcome treat. Noto is one of those rare artists that can pour so much emotion into characters' eyes.

Be prepared to say some goodbyes as well as some hellos. Chances are you won't see the ending coming.

The Bad

This series has been a blast. It's unfortunate it's ending.

The Verdict

This is how you end a series. After all these issues, we have grown attached to the characters in the way that Rick Remender has guided them. He has had a knack for doing the unexpected and even some cruel things from time to time. It's bittersweet to see the series end but Remender ends it in a truly fitting way. Having Phil Noto here as the artist makes it that much easier to say our goodbyes. It's been a great thirty-five issues. The ride isn't completely over as we will still see many of the characters in other series. Bravo to Remender, Noto and Frank Martin Jr.

Can we get a Rick Remender UNCANNY X-FORCE complete omnibus now?
