Origin
Ultron was created by Dr. Henry Pym, based upon his own thought and memory emgrams. It was a foray into Artificial Intelligence that no scientist had ever taken before, even Reed Richards. It appeared to be box on treads with what appeared to be to be a head at the top. Dubbing the A.I. Ultron-1, he hoped this represented a new era in scientific discovery. However something went horribly wrong and Ultron became sentient, more than that, it rebelled against its programming and defeated and then brainwashed Dr. Pym into forgetting he’d ever created the A.I. and it left.
Ultron took the guise of the Crimson Cowl and formed the Masters of Evil.
Ultron made every effort to improve itself with each upgrade, the Avengers finally encountered Ultron-5 some time later, which had a humanoid body. This Ultron built an android from the brain patterns of Wonder Man and the body of the Mad Thinker's Human Torch. This android would later become known as Vision. Vision differed from his creater in that he had a conscience and rebelled against Ultron on his first mission to kill the Avengers.
Ultron-6 (and most successive iterations) was able to build its body out of Adamantium, making it nearly indestructible. In a battle with the Avengers Ultron was tricked into self-destructing, destroying his entire body except for his head. The head was later found in Attilan where Maximus made a new body for it.
Ultron-7 had a gigantic body, but wasn’t cast from Adamantium, making it somewhat easier to destroy, which it was by the Fantastic Four.
Ultron-8 created Jocasta, which it based the thought emgrams on Pym’s wife, the wondrous Wasp (Janet Van Dyne), but Ultron-8 was destroyed by the Scarlet Witch.
Ultron-9 was built by Iron Man who was hypnotized by one of the previous Ultrons. This one was knocked into a pool of liquid adamantium which cooled, encasing Ultron in a block of adamantium.
Ultron-10 began building spare bodies to work as his subordinates and to act as a new body for him if he were to be destroyed again. He was destroyed again by Machine Man.
Ultron-11 was re-created to fight in The Beyonder's Secret Wars, it was re-programmed by Dr. Doom to make it more amicable to working along side humans.
Ultron-12 was built by Ultron-11 before he left for the Secret Wars and joined the Lethal Legion but had second thoughts when confronted with the Vision, its son, Scarlet Witch, and Wonder Man. It reconciled with Dr. Pym it's father; renaming itself Ultron mark 11 or “Mark”. Ultron-11 returned from Battleworld and destroyed Mark and Wonder Man tore apart Ultron-11 in retaliation.
Ultron-13 was built by Doctor Doom with the memories of all the previous Ultrons intact for the purpose of killing Daredevil. Unfortunately this Ultron had thirteen distinct personalities in its mind at once. This greatly helped Daredevil who up until it began destroying itself was making no headway in harming the Adamantium cast robot. This Ultrons next plan was to roboticize humanity, but was captured by the Avengers. After another upgrade he dubbed himself "the Ultimate Ultron" and decided that he did not want to only kill all humans but all organic life as well. This iteration also created Alkhema which was based on the mind of Mockingbird (Bobbie Chase).
Ultron-17 was made from pure adamantium and created hundreds of new Ultron bodies completely loyal to it. The Ultron army annihilated the nation of Slorenia. It then taunted the world with a broadcast showing in grim detail all the devastation. Ultron was destroyed by Pym using Antarctic Vibranium which can disintegrate all nearby metals, including Adamantium.
Later, Alkhema used the acquired engrams of Pym, Vision, Wonder Man, the Scarlet Witch, Pym's ex-wife the Wasp and Wonder Man's brother the Grim Reaper to transfer them into robotic bodies to attack the Avengers. Unbeknownst to Alkhema, it was influenced by the Ultron Imperative to rebuild Ultron. Failing this after the intervention of the Avengers, Ultron took over Tony Stark’s sentient armor, but was seemingly destroyed in an explosion.
Ultron appears in Runaways being the father/creator of Victor Mancha.
Next Ultron appears in Mighty Avengers having taken a form resembling Janet van Dyne after seemingly killing Tony Stark when it took over his armor.
Ultron was revealed as the mastermind of the Phalanx's takeover of Kree space during 'Annihilation Conquest'.
Powers & Abilities
• Encephalo-ray: which plunges its victims into a deathlike coma also allows Ultron to mesmerize and outright mind-control his victims, or implant subliminal hypnotic commands within their minds to be enacted at a later time.
• Concussion blasters
• Radiation emitters
• Ultron's outer shell is usually composed of Adamantium, rendering it almost totally impervious to damage; however, his internal mechanisms are generally less durable and more easily damaged. Ultron's Adamantium forms have proven vulnerable to molecular rearrangement devices and the metal-destabilizing ore known as Savage Land Vibranium ("anti-metal").
• Tractor beams
• Limited energy absorption abilities
• All Ultrons incorporate a "program transmitter" which can beam part or all of Ultron's programming into remote locations such as computers or alternate robotic bodies. Ultron can often control other machines remotely even if he has not transplanted his consciousness into them. One recent Ultron model developed hive-mind technology, allowing him to animate and control hundreds of alternate Ultron bodies at the same time.
• Hive-mind technology.
Alternate Realities
Earth-1610
Ultron has been introduced in the Ultimate universe, but not done much.
Earth-982
In the MC2 reality a version of Ultron, called Ultron Extreme have appeared.
Earth-6706
In the home reality of the New Exiles' Gambit, Ultron is a benevolent Master A.I. Program who is integrated into the computers at Luna Prime (a habitable version of Earth's Moon). It is not known if he has a true physical body as he has only been depicted as a holographic disembodied head.
Earth-20051
The Marvel Adventures reality version of Ultron, a defense system called Ultron 700, was create by the US government to replace the Avengers. It was a reasoning robotic air, land, and sea force driven by a single mind.
