Plot Summary

Overview

"Your replacements grow impatient." The world stands on the brink of war. It's not a war with another country. It's not an alien invasion. It's a war with another of Earth's native species… Homo Superior. Mutants. The world strikes fear into those who hear it. The word strikes fear into the heart of those who ARE it. Mankind has made the first move, launching an army of giant robot executioners called Sentinels, programmed to locate and eliminate the mutant DNA strand. Magneto and his terrorist cell of mutants are preparing to follow through on their threats of homo sapien genocide. The only force that can prevent total annihilation? Five awkward teenagers and their crippled mentor. Collecting the first six issues of the #1 sell-out series, featuring the industry's hottest talents: Mark Millar (The Authority), Adam Kubert (Uncanny X-Men), and Andy Kubert (Thor). War is on the horizon and the Tomorrow People are here. Pick a side.

There are several differences between the regular universe's X-Men and the Ultimate version of X-Men. Yes, the starting line-up included Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast and Iceman, mirroring the original line-up 40 years earlier. But with the introduction of Colossus, who in this universe is homosexual (which if you look, there were hints really early on) and Wolverine in the form of a modern day assassin out to kill Professor X, it became obvious things had the potential to be very different.

This story was also different in the fact that from page one, mutants were out in the open and branded as terrorists. The X-Men's first mission was to save Bobby Drake from a Sentinel attack, showing a great deal of teamwork for a group that was just put together hours before. With the X-Men now on Magneto's radar, he sends his private assassin, Wolverine, to go remove his former partner, Charles Xavier, from the mortal coil. When Wolverine is captured, the X-Men, being the mutant peacekeepers, see it as their responsibility to save him.

Meanwhile Magneto kidnaps the President's daughter. Xavier's team makes their way out to Croatia to save her, resulting in Beast nearly getting killed. Back at the mansion we see the roots of a Wolverine/Jean Grey romance beginning, causing Cyclops, who is in love with Grey, to join Magneto's Brotherhood. The last arc of the volume revolves around Magneto's terrorism as he attacks the United States with reprogrammed Sentinels, only to have Professor X use Magneto's powers against himself, crushing him in the the pieces of the Sentinel army.

As an opening, this is a pretty good start. I don't really like the Kurbert brother's art itself, but I'm willing to look past it. It's not a bad place to start & being that it's the first volume, it's the logical place to start.
