Ultimate X-men #8
This issue begins with what would take an entire issue in the Marvel U. Downtime. Actually, the issue opens with a fish eye view of Wolverine knocking on the door saying "We have come to talk about the lord," I found that to be pretty funny. We then get around to the other students. A blossoming romance between Beast and Storm. The most troubling of all these scenes is a conversation between Jean Grey and Professor X.
Bobby had been to a high school party and came home happy he met a girl. Because he told her about the X-men, Mr. I wont pry into the minds of our students decides to erase his and her memory of each other. Not erase her memory of the X-men facts, but both of them. Yes , he mind rapes Ice Man.
This is the biggest flaw in the Ultimate Universe, and it makes me think Mark Miller would really be a dick to hang around. The premise is to make more realistic people. Instead, he writes everyone as a dick to be around. Flaws are not the only human traits. I guess Miller has not learned that yet.
The second part of the story is an attack on the X-mansion. It is one of those scenes that has to happen off screen, because if the writer was honest, every individual battle would take an entire book. It also is a scene that forgets this is a school full of mutants. All these guys hunting for mutant talent take are the X-men. If stealing mutants to recruit for Weapon X is your goal. You would be hard pressed to find a larger selection in any one spot.
A good book, but nothing near a stand out issue.
