Plot Summary

Overview

The Ultimates have journeyed into the Supremeverse to do battle with the Squadron Supreme. And they’re amazed by the destruction that has occurred there due to the unintentional meddling of the Fantastic Four’s young leader Reed Richards. It’s a clash of the greatest powers from two universes! Don’t miss it!

(Spoilers)

Nick Fury and the heroes from the Ultimate Universe arrive in the Supremeverse and it's already time for a fight. Fury orders Thor to engage Hyperion and he complies. Hyperion and the Thunder God prove to be too evenly matched so Fury sends The Human Torch and The Invisible Woman to back up his man. On the Helicarrier Fury explains why he sent them. Other then Iron Man they are the only fliers and according to him are more expendable. The flying ship heads for Richards while Sue and Johnny assist Thor. The Invisible Woman contains Hyperion in a bubble but his super strong punches prove to be too much and she can barely hold him in. The Human Torch tells her to open up a hole so he can pump in his flames. The fire doesn't seem to phase Hyperion so The Human Torch leaves nothing back and goes nova, aiming all his power into the sphere.

Unfortunately, all Johnny's efforts do nothing but annoy Hyperion. With a single blast of his laser vision Hyperion both breaks The Invisible Woman's sphere and sends The Human Torch plummeting to the ground. Sue, who had been forced to land due to the strain of maintaining the force field, catches her brother before he hits the ground but she passes out immediately after. What comes next is astounding but also frightening. Thor attacks a mad (but calm) Hyperion but winds up on the receiving end of an attack. Hyperion, moving faster than Thor can react to, grabs Thor, takes his hammer, hits him with it, and throws both to the ground.

Meanwhile, on the Helicarrier, Nick Fury explains that their target is the Supremeverses version of Washington DC. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch think it's foolish to assume that America rules this world but they let Fury think what he wants. Captain America informs Spider-Man that he thinks Fury is hiding something.

Somewhere on the ground, Reed Richards, the man this whole commotion is about, is being escorted "to a more secure location." On his way, he takes the time to look outside and sees that the heroes of two universes are going at each other with everything they've got.

    Is 9 issues really necessary?

    Part 5 of 9

We get some artwork of Thor fighting Hyperion on the cover, and that is exactly what we get in this issue... almost the entire issue. The fight itself is actually good, but it literally takes up almost the entire issue and the story itself doesn't progress any further for the most part. We do get a few heroes that are suspicious of Nick Fury knowing more then he's letting on... but not much else happens.

I honestly don't think it should have taken 5 issues to get to where we end up now. It feels like a lot more actually happened in the three first issues that Brian Bendis wrote, compared to what JMS has done so far. If you're writing feels decompressed compared to Bendis... then you're doing something wrong. I'll admit that although little is accomplished in this issue, what is accomplished is well done. The artwork is just fantastic. I've complained about Greg Land on numerous occasions, but I really think his artwork is more consistent now then ever before.

Here's my main problem with this issue. You could almost skip it entirely and not loose much in this mini series (I did say almost). You shouldn't be able to skip an issue in a mini series... that's the whole point of a mini series. With all that said... this issue still has a killer fight sequence with some wonderful art.

    Hyperion vs Thor!

    Part 5 of 9

In this issue we see Nick Fury telling Thor to intercept and Thor replies saying "with pleasure" as Thor engages in battle with Hyperion. The artwork in this issue is quite impressive especially the artwork for the battle between Hyperion and Thor and they seem evenly matched. Nick Fury orders the Human Torch and the Invisible Woman to give Thor a hand but Cap and Spidey don't feel its a good idea to send them out like that.

Nick Fury replies with sarcasm to Cap and Spiderman's answer. Thor fights Hyperion and Hyperion shows he has never fought someone like Thor but the battle turns when the Human Torch and Sue Storm interfere. Sue make a bubble to contain Hyperion but Hyperion proves to be too much for Sue so she can't handle it.

Johnny watches his sister and then he notices that Hyperion is a tough guy and that he doesn't need to hold back so he decides to go supernova hot and that only angers Hyperion, Hyperion uses laser eye vision to defeat the Human Torch and Sue Storm is worn out after the fight, so when Torch is unable to fly Sue (already on the ground) saves him with a force field bubble. As Thor looses it he attacks Hyperion from behind but Hyperion (much faster than Thor) reacts by taking Mjolnir and hitting Thor with it and he drops them both.

As Reed Richards is being transported to another location he asks the security guards questions but he gets the same answer (the guard replies by saying "I am not qualified to answer tha question"). As Reed sees that he won't get an answer he checks what is happening outside and he finds out that all of Earth's heroes are fighting the heroes of the Supremeverse.
