    Thor Returns

Are you a fan of the New Avengers? Then you should look into the New Ultimates. Just like the Ultimates are the Ultimate versions of the Avengers, the New Ultimates are the Ultimate Universes New Avengers. In New Ultimates Thor Reborn, Jeff Loeb tells a great story about the gathering of the New Ultimates to stop Loki, paired with great characters and good artwork from Frank Cho.

    Story

New Ultimates Thor Reborn begins when the New Ultimates find the Defenders trying to steal M'Jionr (Thor's Hammer). Meanwhile Thor's is in Hel and he is about to have a baby with Hela. Enchantress has turned all the female Ultimates against their comrades until her spell is broken. Meanwhile, Enchantress convinces the female Ultimates to betray the male ones as part of Loki's master plan. Once Loki kills Valkyrie Thor's love Thor is resurrected and seeks vengeance. The thing I like about this is yet again it's a Marvel team dealing with a classic villain, Loki. In the Ultimate Univers, Loki is still Thor's evil half-brother, a characteristic the pretty much has remained unchanged in the Marvel Multiverse. One complaint I do have is that the Defenders don't get much character development, I would like to see more of them and know more about them all I know is that they were wannabe superheroes until they got superpowers from Loki. They mostly serve as backstory for ValkYrie than an essential part of the story. To me they deserved more time. Other than that the story is great.

    Characters

New Ultimates does justice to the cast of characters in its narrative. Thor is a buffoon who will fight his own allies when he's angry. Thor attacks the Ultimates after he comes back to life to see Valkyrie sain by his half-brother. Valkyrie is a fan of Thor, who fell in love with him after they met in person. Her love for the point where it angered her to have Captain America bring it up as an attack. Captain America is a team leader and is always vigilant of his team, and becomes skeptical of Valkyrie after the New Ultimates were attacked by the defenders. Iron Man is a cocky playboy who is flirtatious with Carol Danvers. Danvers is the director of SHIELD and she very much has the personality traits of Ms./Captain Marvel. Hawkeye is the quippy self-aware marksman we've all come to love. Power Princess is Marvel's answer to Wonder Woman, and she is much more warrior-like than her DC counterpart. Ka-Zar, Shanna, and Black Panther don't get much panel time and that to me hurt their purpose in the story. They mostly just fight Loki's army before the New Ultimates arrive. I don't care that much for Ka-Zar and Shanna, but I was disappointed to see Black Panther get the short end of the stick. As for the villains, Loki and Enchantress are great. Enchantress is manipulative and can persuade her subjects to enact her will. Loki is deceitful and very treacherous when he's in combat. Very much the trickster we all know and love. As I previously stated, the Defenders don't get much of an appearance. Nighthawk, Marvel's Batman, gets the most character of them as being the team leader and the one who named Valkyrie, but still he's nothing more than a glorified cameo. Power Man, Hellcat, Hellstorm (Son of Satan in the book), and Hellcat get almost nothing for character and serve as nothing more than glorified henchmen which is honestly a waste of good characters. Aside from that Jeff Loeb does a great job with handling these characters.

    Artwork

Frank Cho's artwork made this a blast to read from cover to cover. His character designs were amazing. The Defenders even looked cool, which only made it a shame that they were so underused in New Ultimates: Thor Reborn. That being said the Iron Man Thor/Hulk Buster suit looked a little lame and didn't have much of an Iron Man ring to it. The Thorbuster looked like a generic mech suit and not an Iron Man armor. Other than that Cho did an amazing job with character designs.

Overall I'd say that New Ultimates: Thor Reborn was a great read. The book's story, artwork, and a cast of characters all made it worthwhile. Even if some characters were underutilized. This definitely a must-read for Avengers/Ultimates fans.
