I have to say, this book really holds true to it's name. In the course of the first 3 issues of this series I have counted roughly 7 different armor designs, some of which are henchmen, like in issue 2, and some of which are credible as threats, such as the enemies of this issue. It's comforting to see this stay true, because at first I really did expect this to just be a random Iron Man story or have just one enemy armor. Now if only Ultimate War Machine were in here...
And now to spoil things.
I have to say, the Bram Velsing guy that Tony fought at the end of last issue and the start of this issue is lame. His armor looks ridiculous and I am sure there is a significance to that random logo on his right pec, but it means nothing to me. The fight here wasn't anything spectacular, but it set up the later battle nicely by damaging the armor a bit, so it served it's purpose. That being said, this was really just filler and I don't like that Tony just kills him after the fight, seeing how in Ultimates 2 he held life quite dearly when it came to the Hulk and even with Black Widow he never came off as cold as he did here. So far Warren Ellis has had a perfect characterization of Tony, with his drunken shenanigans to his banter, but this just came out of left field and didn't fly for me.
The art on this issue is as good as always, and my only complaint this time (Since Steve Kurth is always almost perfect in this series) would be the lips on a few pages. I feel like Tony and Justine Hammer have morphing lips because they honestly seem to change almost every panel. Tony doesn't suffer from this as much, and part of it might be the colorist adding too much red to his lips, but it bugged me in some of the quiet scenes. Also, Justine's face is as bad as it was before, and half the time I can't even tell if she is meant to be white or Asian.
In other news, there is a lettering error when Tony says "Jazzler" and I wonder what the significance of that word is, because those are the types of Easter Eggs comics are full of. Ghost pops in at the end of the comic to blast Tony into what I believe is the English Channel and comes off as pretty bad@$$, which is fantastic. However, while Tony last issue was as bad@$$ as could be, this issue he practically tells the bad guys "Hey! Yea, YOU! I'm out of ammo! You're more powerful than me! I'm screwed!" This bugged me a bit and wasn't like in your face but it was definitely there at the end, which I could have done without.
Overall, 3.5 out of 5. I would say this is the weakest issue of the series so far but honestly, it's still pretty good and at the very least has cool robot fighting which is always a win.
