Wild Horses couldn't drag me away, from finishing this issue...

Quite a few musicians lately including Tom Morello, Max Bemis, Girard Way, Claudio Sanchez and more have infiltrated comics. I have been a fan of Claudio and his band (Coheed & Cambria) for a really long time. I saw C&C play live at the Metro in Chicago like 7 years ago, and after that, I finally started to get into the comic book universe that Claudio created around this band and all their concept albums. This new series Translucid doesn’t seem to be connected to the other works Claudio has written (though basically anything could be set in the present day of the futuristic Amory Wars universe, maybe this is).

This first issue of Translucid is really unique, and has a very strange but engaging story. The story follows The Horse, who is a Kingpin-style crime boss (which is always a fun archetype to play with) who wears a large, white horse head mask. “The Horse” has been released from prison; the hero of this universe, “The Navigator”, put him there. The Horse is meeting with three lesser criminals to discuss his returning to the world outside his prison, and his plans for The Navigator. The story of present day New York where The Horse and The Navigator operate is cut with scenes of a young boy who is creating and designing some sort of super-suit (I assume this is a young Navigator, but who knows… the last page of the issue has some implications of a supernatural nature). The Horse plans to give himself over to The Apocalypse Three (The Colonist, Brutal Savage and The Monarch. All of which are varied and unique looking baddies), to draw a reclusive Navigator out into the open. The look of The Navigator is really what drew me into the story. It’s almost like Blue Lantern Saint Walker and Moon Knight had a kick-butt superhero lovechild. And he is awesome; with a utility belt that looks like a 3-D projected app store that he can pull A GRAPPLING HOOK OUT OF THIN AIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like, WHAT?!? We need this, like now. Is that what Google Glass V2.0 will be like? I really hope so. The Horse plants a bomb in the Empire State Building and The Navigator comes to diffuse the bomb and save the day. But The Horse has more in store for The Navigator than just a bomb. They have some very weighty conversation, and you get some good insight into the psychological state of our super-hero and his villainous counterpart. I really loved the line that Navigator said to The Horse- “You’re the closest thing to a friend I’ve ever had”. It really reminds me of the dialogue between Batman and the Joker from the Death of the Family series.

This first issue is a really interesting opening chapter in this series, and I honestly have no idea where this series will go from here. I will definitely be reading more of this series, and will be looking forward to more Amory Wars comics (hopefully… I don’t know if that’s actually going to happen) or anything else Claudio writes, comics or otherwise. This was a really fun story, it really grabs your attention, and the art is really dynamic and different. The colors are bright and sharp, and it really enhances the stark difference between The Horse (who’s mask is white) and The Navigator (who wears all dark colors) and I liked that it reversed the typical color scheme for good- and bad-guys. I think this is a strong #1 issue, and its got some great artwork by Daniel Bayliss and some really well written back-and-forth dialogue from Claudio and Chondra Echert, so I definitely recommend checking this book out.

The GoodI am always open to a new series. I like to support these new projects. I had no idea what the crap Translucid was about. I just thought, hey Boom, why not? So I jumped in only knowing a small piece of this would involve a horse. Boy, did I ever receive a treat! Holy snap. What a piece of work. I have my opinions and ideas of what is going on here and it is genius. The story involves a small child who spends a lot of time by himself. He is a fan of sci-fi and superheroes. This is, to me,...
