He aided Bilbo Baggins and the thirteen dwarfs on their quest to retake Erebor and years later help Frodo as a member of the Fellowship of the Ring.
The Heir to the throne of Gondor, Aragorn was a ranger of middle earth and second in command in the Fellowship Of The Ring. It is his destiny to become the lost king of Gondor, but it is not a responsibility he wants.
Meriadoc Brandybuck, Merry for short, was Frodo's cousin and one of his closest friends.
Pippin is one of the four hobbit members of the Fellowship Of The Ring. He is a knight of Gondor and close friend to Frodo Baggins, Sam Gamgee and especially Merry Brandybuck.

The Balrog is a demonic creature of flame and shadow, featured in J.R.R. Tolkien's series of stories set in Middle Earth. They were fallen Maiar who were corrupted by Melkor. They have been around since Melkors time and are described as "The demons of the Ancient world" knowing how old they are.
Gollum was once a Hobbit before he was ensnared by the power of the ring. Now his only reason for living is to reclaim his "precious". In the Peter Jackson adaptations of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit books, he was played by Andy Serkis.
